2021 P-F1 Qualifying Competition

Post by P-F1 Games Master »

2021 PLANET-F1 FORUM QUALIFYING COMPETITION

Year 3 begins now! The qualifying contest in 2019 was incredibly close, and despite the extra points on offer in 2020 the standings weren't much further apart.

RULES:

- Predict the ENTIRE grid, broken into Q1 dropouts, Q2 dropouts, and the top 10. ALL drivers must be ranked in order.
- Q1 and Q2 rules are changing for this year: assuming you get the right session, you can score between 1 and 15 points per driver:
Correct position – 15 pts
1 away – 10 pts
2 away – 6 pts
3 away – 3 pts
4 away - 1pt
- For those you called in the top 10, you score points in the same way as Pick 10. This is another change to the scoring system, this time if you call a driver in P10 and they finish P11you score 0, not 18. Assuming your top 10 selections make Q3, this means:
Correct position – 25 pts
1 away - 18 pts
2 away - 15 pts
3 away - 12 pts
4 away - 10 pts
5 away - 8 pts
6 away - 6 pts
7 away - 4 pts
8 away - 2 pts
9 away - 1 pt

Entries are required by the start of FP1 BUT now with the same penalty system as Pick 10: after the start of FP1 you lose 15 points, FP2 18 and FP3 25. For obvious reasons as soon as the light goes green for qualifying, entries are closed for the weekend.

One other new rule, designed to help players who miss a weekend or two, sees any missed rounds (up to 3) using the previous weekend's predictions to cover you. This way I hope to minimise players being eliminated from contention by mistakes, which happened to a couple of players last year. Any more than 3 rounds, however, and you start to score 0 for the extra missed races.

Finally, I'll list those players who have achieved podiums in the contest's history:

CHAMPIONS
Remmirath, 2019 (4659, 8 wins)
JN23, 2020 (3515, 4 wins)

RUNNERS UP
Icemanjee1, 2019 (4482, 0 wins)
Icemanjee1, 2020 (3476, 4 wins)

BRONZE MEDALLISTS
Exediron, 2019 (4445, 4 wins)
Jenson's Understeer, 2020 (3433, 1 win)

Good luck everyone!

Since it's bound to happen: how would that work for someone who misses the first race but then enters a prediction for race two?

If they miss the first race, or up to the first 3 races, they will be given the same score as last place in each event prior to making an entry. Obviously that would eat into their reprieves as normal.

Sorry to have missed you guys last year. Was traveling western mtn states (camping, fishing) most of the summer trying to get away from the communistic covid tyranny and lockdowns here in the US, and was out of internet-connection proximity most of the time. Only to return at the beginning of autumn to find things worse off than before I left. Don't get me started.

Very much looking forward to the new season, and wish everyone the best. Here goes:

No longer a mod, and retirement is bliss :P but no, no problem using a different format. It's still as clear as anyone's what you're predicting, so just as easy to pull across to the spreadsheet. Which, incidentally, I've made far more high-tech to prevent the frequent errors I've made across competitions for the past couple of years!

Q1 is over, tight fight at the front with no less than 5 of the 9 players scoring 40 points to hold a provisional lead. Those players are JN23, Jenson's Understeer, Jzusy, UnlikeUday and Icemanjee1. 6th with 31 is myself, joint 7th with 23 are Remmirath and Herb, and at the back with 21 points is Tufty.

I'll add to this post after each session.

Q2 was a lot lower scoring, with none of us expecting Stroll to make Q3 or Seb Q1, among other surprised. The maximum score was only 25 points here, with JN23 and Jenson's Understeer again sharing the top spot. Jzusy took 3rd with 20 points. Tufty and UnlikeUday share 4th with 15 points, while just 2 behind them are Icemanjee1 and Herb. Remmirath and myself bring up the rear with 10 points apiece.

Going into Q3, the points stand thus:

1 = JN23 - 65
1 = Jenson's Understeer - 65
3 - Jzusy - 60
4 - UnlikeUday - 55
5 - Icemanjee1 - 53
6 - P-F1 Games Master - 41
7 = Herb - 36
7 = Tufty - 36
9 - Remmirath - 33

Q3, being the high scoring session as well as the sharp end of the field, is what we were all waiting for. Would Red Bull dominate? Would Mercedes? In the end, arguably a bit of both happened. The lack of Perez put Red Bull on the back foot, and cost us all points, but Mercedes still ended up stuck in the shadow of a fearsome lap by Verstappen.

Q3 results:

1 - JN23 - 181
2 - Jenson's Understeer - 173
3 - Jzusy - 169
4 - Herb - 159
5 - UnlikeUday - 155
6 = Tufty - 137
6 = Icemanjee1 - 137
8 - Remmirath - 131
9 - P-F1 Games Master - 122

Final standings from Bahrain:

1 - JN23 - 246
2 - Jenson's Understeer - 238
3 - Jzusy - 229
4 - UnlikeUday - 210
5 - Herb - 195
6 - Icemanjee1 - 190
7 - Tufty - 173
8 - Remmirath - 164
9 - P-F1 Games Master - 163

This was the only one of the various PF1 prediction games I didn't completely Haas at, so I'm excited for the opportunity to change that :lol: By the way, I liked the write up being done to mirror Q1/Q2/Q3. Gives it a little quirk that separates this game from the others.

Q1 cost us all points within 8 minutes as poor Yuki Tsunoda lost the tail at the Variante Alta and destroyed the back end of his AlphaTauri. That'll show itself more in Q2/3 depending who predicted him where, but it was good news for the backmarkers as it gave the bottom 3 teams a second Q2 place to fight over. The standings were more varied than usual in Q1 as a result:

1 - Tufty - 60
2 = Herb - 50
2 = Remmirath - 50
2 = P-F1 Games Master - 50
5 - JN23 - 40
6 = jzusy - 35
6 = UnlikeUday - 35
8 = Jenson's Understeer - 30
8 = IcemanJee1 - 30

Alonso was perhaps the biggest shock of Q2, but the points lost for most of us from Tsunoda were felt here. This will likely be one of the lowest scoring sessions of the season, although Q2 in Bahrain still beats it. The midfield is incredibly hard to call this year.

1 - Jenson's Understeer - 30
2 - UnlikeUday - 25
3 - jzusy - 19
4 - JN23 - 14
5 = Remmirath - 13
5 = P-F1 Games Master - 13
7 - Tufty - 12
8 = Herb - 10
8 = IcemanJee1 - 10

Cumulative scores:

1 - Tufty - 72
2 = Remmirath - 63
2 = P-F1 Games Master - 63
4 = Jenson's Understeer - 60
4 = Herb - 60
4 = UnlikeUday - 60
7 = jzusy - 54
7 = JN23 - 54
9 - IcemanJee1 - 40

Norris losing his final Q3 time saved us all a lot of points but cost us a great start tomorrow. This session was a lot lower scoring than Q3 in Bahrain, but with Alonso, Tsunoda and Sainz all missing Q3, we were all on the back foot.

Just a quick heads up: for the 3 sprint race weekends, FP1 will earn a 15 point penalty and then it's straight to DQ if you don't get your predictions in before the Friday qualifying session. Sprint races won't be relevant to this game.
