PF1 Forum teammate wars vote: Sakhir 2020

Post by Jenson's Understeer »

And then there was one! We are left with just one TMW to settle for 2020, and my goodness is it ever close. Kevin Magnussen's victory over Romain Grosjean was obviously tempered by the horrific crash the Frenchman suffered, but it is a victory nonetheless, one that mathematically confirms he takes the TMW victory at Haas for the third season out of three. As it turns out, that incident was the last occasion in which we will see Romain Grosjean racing in F1 (aside from an unlikely comeback in 2022, of course) and even if Grosjean had won a sentimental vote victory, KMag would've still been ahead with their battle brought to an early climax.

It leaves just Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris still fighting for something, which Norris taking a slender, slender victory in Bahrain - by all of a single vote! - to edge 8-7 ahead with two to go. His teammate still maintains his advantage in respect to the overall vote, so we could see (off the top of my head) only the second occasion in which the driver who wins the TMW battle doesn't receive the most votes across the season.

As for the rest of the field, there wasn't a great deal out of the ordinary. All the drivers who have already won for the season extended their leads in Bahrain, with the exception of Kimi Raikkonen, who lost another close vote to Antonio Giovinazzi.

It is very amusing that percentage wise, I think Ferrari still have a strong chance of being nearly the closest pair of team mates this year! :D

Vettel maybe isn't so bad ;) or the other way round for Leclerc.

The main thing that I think has turned this around is just how big leclerc's mistakes have been. He's caused a double retirement for the team, two others for himself as well as taking Stroll, Verstappen and very nearly Perez out too.

I think Verstappen could have avoided that crash a bit better but still. Causing 6 retirements in a season is not a good look.

I would put that down to some of Leclerc's bonehead driving.

Russell over Bottas, although Bottas wasn't quite as bad as he looked - he was catching Russell when disaster struck.

Vettel over Leclerc: Slow, undramatic drive to a non-points finish, or an ace qualifying lap followed by lap lap 1 brain fade? At least Vettel's poor performance didn't affect anyone else or land him with a grid penalty.

Verstappen over Albon: Same kind of problem for me, but Max was only somewhat to blame for his elimination and didn't break anybody else... but that accident did look avoidable. Maybe this should be a lesson learned for him about pre-race preparation, particularly knowing where the gravel traps are?

Sainz over Norris: Norris did fine given a grid penality and difficuly qualifying, but Sainz was excellent.

Ocon over Ricciardo: Ocon was lucky on strategy, but executed excellently. Ricciardo did a quietly respectable job.

Kvyat over Gasly: Better qualifying, better race.

Perez over Stroll: Obviously. Stroll had the right strategy, didn't get clouted on lap 1, and yet his team mate won the race after running 20th? This is the second time this year that the stars have aligned for Stroll to win a race in a midfield car, and the second time he's failed to turn in the performance.

Giovinazzi over Raikkonen: Giovianazzi won class C. Raikkonen span on lap 1.

Magnussen over Fittipaldi: Grudgingly. Magnussen did perform better, but a good rookie performance from Fittipaldi

Laffiti over Aitken: Laffiti broke down while running ahead of Aitken, and Aitken was fairly wayward.

I think I agree with all these with possibly the exception of Williams. I’m not sure how far ahead Latifi was when he retired and I’d take into account Aitken being a rookie if the gap was fairly small.

Unsure in Red Bull too - I know Albon was slow and not challenging but I think Verstappen might have made an error for his retirement, although an error that he wouldn’t have made for Leclerc/Perez.

Agree with all of these.

I often seem to get Lafiti in my head for some reason, but it is Latifi. I also always used to type wherlien rather than wehrlein though, so we all can make mistakes!

I blame Jacques Laffite! I'm too young to have seen him race, but I know the name and spent the first few races of this year assuming that they were somehow related.

I would be guessing that they are both French in origin?
