Verstappen on pole for the first race from Rosenqvist a tenth back, this race for professional racing drivers.

An 8 lap race Verstappen wins by 6 seconds from Max Gunther, Colton Herta, Felix Rosenqvist, Jimmy Broadbent, Felix da Costa, Junncadella, Neel Jani, these 8 drivers qualifying for the final.

The second race is for the top gamers, the third race is via a qualifying competition.

Yeah it's good were it loses out a bit is the willingness to make contact something you wouldn't see half as much in real racing.

To me, this just feels wrong to be watching, especially with commentators. I think I need to stick to reality! The thoughts that is is all simulated ruin it for me. Nothing wrong with other liking it though.

I can't remember Verstappen's pole lap time, the gamer's pole about half a second to a second quicker than Verstappen.

Now the R2 racers who do endurance racing, apparently these are the hard core sim racers, just confirmed that Verstappen was half a second slower than the gamer's pole lap.

Pole lap 3 tenths quicker than race 2, 8 tenths quicker than what Verstappen managed.

Verstappen qualified 9th, 7 tenths off pole, he must have made a slight mistake as he was 2 tenths slower than he managed in practice, still not bad against the best sim racers in the world.

Best racing driver Felix Rosenqvist in 7th, makes you wonder were Verstappen might have finished because he was quicker, Verstappen ended up 11th helped by some of the crazy driving in front of him.

To make the racing more realistic drivers really need to be penalised for reckless driving.

They are just racing for fun and bragging rights. Since a crash does not injure anyone or carry a cost, they can take more chances.

But that race just opened the door, at this very moment I am watching Max and many other top drivers in a F3 sim race. There will be a heck of a lot more of this stuff in the coming months. iRacing just ran the 12 Hours of Sebring, the turnout was insane. And on April 25th they will conduct a special event, the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. I expect a ginormous turnout with a heck of a lot top drivers.

Racers have to race.

It's a nice filler for those of us starved of watching sports in particular motorsport.

I enjoyed the race, and I hope (and expect) there will be more similar events to come until the season does start properly. Not all the drivers do any sim racing at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if some more who do show up to future events.

Just watched the Bahrain race. Bit of a crazy start and a few other dodgy tactics, especially from the Hulk who's idea of stopping someone passing is to weave like he's warming his tyres up, but still very entertaining.

Looking forward to the next race.

INDYCAR and iRacing, the world’s premier motorsports racing simulation, are partnering to currently stage six virtual race events featuring a stellar lineup of current NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers and possibly some special guests beginning Saturday, March 28.

Each race will be streamed live on indycar.com for the enjoyment of racing fans while the current 2020 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season is suspended through April as a result of the coronavirus situation. While indycar.com will serve as the primary live streaming source, there also will be secondary platforms to watch the virtual race events each week – INDYCAR’s YouTube and Facebook Live as well as iRacing’s Twitch.

I am currently watching them practice. Most of the recognizable Indycar drivers are practicing.

Say what you will about US motorsport, but their eSports replacements have been on a level far above what F1 has put together. A hardcore sim with almost the entire field present is something F1 fans can only dream about at present.

I just watched a few highlights and after the first 45 seconds, I gave up. Seeing the cars crash and take no damage then turn into ghosts just looks ridiculous for what is intended to be a virtual version of the race. It could be far more realistic.

There are quite a few other things I could comment on that look like they could easily be improved to make it seem more realistic. The marshals behind the barrier have no reaction whatsoever to the crashes as they happen. They just stand there like robots which i guess they are.

Given if is the official F1 game, I really am surprised how bad it looks. There are so many more effects that will be possible that don't seem to be used yet.

Then perhaps you should have watched a little longer. Of course it's not the real thing and it was a conscious decision to not have damage on. Nobody knows what's going to happen with lots of new players to the game, so to have half the field wiped out at T1 would have been worse than cars continuing without damage. I'm guessing they could up the damage level as things progress.

It's worth noting that the first F1 style game I ever played on a computer was this. I feel that un-reactive marshals is a pretty minor quibble.

Yea it is just me being picky. Just not sure why there are so many little things that couldn't have been improved though. It is the fact they are such a basic easy thing to improve that is my issue. There was an article on racefans.net about the virtual IndeCar. The graphics and detail and many other things were dramatically better concerning how that looked anyway. Regarding older games, I'm not sure about this one, but they likely will have been ahead of their time for the technology around. I'm not sure there will have been as many areas that could have been an easy fix for the ability of the equipment back then, but i could be wrong.

I do agree with lots that you say, but it's all getting better each year. There are limits to device technology and if they make it so that the game only runs on the very latest tech, people with older PC's won't be able to play it.

I find the pit stops dreadful because of the way the cars turn in to their box in a crazy manner. However, the basic racing was really good imo and the second race Sunday night had a brilliant finish for 4th place.

This is what I was comparing it to. It just surprises me how the IndeCar looks so much more advanced. I guess many are little details that many won't even care about, but there are some things that look to have had a lot of effort put in to look that bit more realistic. Such as the guys in the pit lane, if they are on the camera shot, you can even tell that they look to be having a conversation by their body movements. Also, the way the cars ride the road on F1 2020 looks quite odd. They look to me like they are skating just above it. When they spin and go onto the grass, they almost look like they are floating like they have been put on top of existing footage. Something about it just doesn't look right. The way the cars handle the road and bumps on the virtual IndyCar just looks so much more convincing. Including the pit entry which you mentioned.

The F1 game does seems to have better textures for the grass, road and background but seems to lack a lot of detail in other areas and also doesn't seem to look like the drivers find it anything like the real thing. The sort of accidents that happen seem to come out of nowhere. If no other vertual things out there were much better, it wouldn't surprise me as much. But is is just the difference between these two that does.

Honestly, I don't think you are going to get any enjoyment out of these unless you stop trying to pretend it's "real". It's never going to seem that way to you. If you are going to be able to enjoy it you'll have to enjoy if for what it is.

That takes me back! I remember playing Chequered Flag on the ZX Spectrum. Such fun...

You are right that I don't enjoy these things. But virtual IndyCar does look far more realistic than this which i sent a link to in my post further up. I know games have their limits somewhere, it just surprises me that the official F1 game isn't somewhat more advanced than it is given others out there are.

It's fundamentally a pick up and play game for consoles. IndyCar are using iRacing which is a proper sim that would usually be played on a high powered PC.

You get different things from both. I don't think it's really fair to compare one to the other.

Well another article published today on race fans had the video with the editor discussing things about them both. I can understand that f1 doesn't require as powerful PC's, but still, some of the decisions such as no damage seem very odd to me. And as the video says, it may also put some people off that they are using a mix of F1 drivers and rather random ones too. And I think I can see why a great deal of the F1 drivers won't want to play this. It could well be similar thoughts to what I have in that it it feels sort of irrelevant for them to do as it isn't like proper racing and they have better things to train with.

But yea, i clearly have a different view on this to most. But it is a fact that it seems most F1 drivers don't seem to be interested.

Your reasoning is kind of circular? If not all the current drivers will compete then surely they have to fill the grid with others? If all the current drivers did want to compete then there would be no "randoms".

Last week was much, much better than the previous effort. The drivers that did do it seemed to enjoy it. Hopefully it will get better again next time but to tell you the truth I don't think you should bother with it. You will never enjoy this. And that's fine, people are different and not everyone likes the same things.

Well, this video also did say that it was better then the previous week yes. But he also says at 3:02 pretty much what you go against my reasoning for. I don't mean that it must be this way, but i don't think it quite works out. Having a mix of the real F1 drivers and a load of random people. He was basically saying it would likely be better going for one or the other and it would likely have an increased number of viewers if things went that way. I guess you won't agree with his view then either as that is similar to the way I see it.

I feel this is one reason why verstappen won't want to race as he is so used to it and he will likely just be so much better than the majority of people.

I don't really understand what you're saying?

Every single entry apart from two competing last weekend were racing drivers. The majority of those were current or former F1 drivers. One of the two that wasn't was Jimmy Broadbent a well known sim racer.

So really only one "random".

I agree for the Bahrain one they had a load of random famous people and it didn't really work but for Australia they addressed that and went down the racing driver route.

The thing is, there's only one game with the 'Official' status when it comes to F1, so even if there are 10 other games with better physics, graphic or whatever, the real drivers are probably only ever going to be able to play F1 2019.
