PF1 Pick 10 Competition - 2016 Edition (Final Update)

Post by pokerman »

Ladies and gentlemen, it is back... the PF1 Pick 10 Competition! 2016 Edition

Rules are simple, pick 10 drivers you think will finish the race in the points and place them in the order of which you think they will finish. Points are awarded according to the difference your selection is from the race result, providing the selected drivers score points.
o Picking driver in correct place earns 25 points.
o One place out earns 18 points.
o Two places out earns 15 points.
o Three places out earns 12 points.
o Four places out earns 10 points.
o Five places out earns 8 points.
o Six places out earns 6 points.
o Seven places out earns 4 point.
o Eight places out earns 2 point.
o Nine places out earns 1 point.
Maximum points per race is 250.

Example for the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix:

Tip / Result: Points

1: Rosberg / 14th: 0 points
2: Hamilton / 1st: 18 points
3: Bottas / 3rd: 25 points
4: Ricciardo / 4th: 25 points
5: Massa / 2nd: 12 points
6: Vettel / 8th: 15 points
7: Alonso / 9th: 15 points
8: Button / 5th: 12 points
9: Raikkonen / 10th: 18 points
10: Magnussen / 11th: 0 points

Therefore my overall score for Abu Dhabi would be:
140 points

The person who has the most points by the end of the season wins the championship.

Your picks must be entered before Friday Practice 1 and can be changed any time before the session starts (just be sure to let me know). Any late picks will incur a penalty depending on how many sessions have passed, note that one second late is still late.
-15 points for FP1
-18 points for FP2
-25 points for FP3
-DSQ for Qual

In case the forum temporary closes during a race week and you are unable to submit your entry, your average score from past rounds will be used.

What are you waiting for? You have 13 days, 9 hours and 12 minutes until Practice 1 of the Melbourne Grand Prix!

@Moderators: Can I kindly ask you to postpone moving this topic to the "Games" section as I would like to attract as many members as possible at least until Melbourne?! To make it a sticky would be nice

My goal is pretty simple: go one better than last year.

And if I can win a couple of rounds in the process, well, I'd take that, too!

I was getting worried it wasn't coming back! I can't wait to get going again, but I'm nearly always in the tail end of results :(

I know it defeats the purpose of the Games section, but I think it would be good if we kept it here to maintain everyone's focus on it.

2015 was just a warmup; this time I plan to avoid falling apart in the first six races and go 3 better on the championship table! :]

I don't think we need to; once it gets going, this thing has usually got about 70 people at the start and 40-50 who post consistently to the end. That's plenty to make a competitive field.

I'm in this year, after watching the end of it with interest last season. We'll see how it goes -- I think my main aim this season will be to score a few good points!

Last year was the first time in the top 10 for me, hoping to do better this year ... that said, picking for this first race is potentially going to be a minefield! Almost tempted to wait until after FP1 and take a tactical penalty just to get a better idea of the standing, or at least see who's blowing engines - looking at you Honda..

In any case, regardless of all the quali nonsense it's going to be good to be back :)

@Pokerman - can't we add some new features in it?
Just like Autsport GP Predictor, why not we be allowed to choose:
Pole Position,
Fastest Lap,
Number of retirements
& get 10 points or so for getting them right.

So we do this for every race or this is to decide WDC positions?

You mean every race, no? kk, I am in, work permitting

Will be fun to find out how wrong I am vs a knowledgeable group

No, because Formula 1 fans need to learn to stop trying to change everything especially if there is nothing wrong with it in the first place. ;)

The reason why I thought about this is because it seemed that most of times the choices match with so many different participants. Had we also been able to choose the pole poistion or number of retirements, then there would be some added bonus to the scores.

It's anyway just a suggestion as I'm happy with the game as well.

I'm sure there's a way that we can add sprinklers somehow. Or maybe in the spirit of the new qualifying after everyone makes their predictions whoever won the week before is entitled to change everyone else's however they want for no reason at all

I know what you mean - ties are annoying, but considering that it's a (very) rare weekend where the top score is even over 200 let alone higher, there's always room to have broken the tie by getting better/luckier picks. Keeping it as is forces people to balance risk and reward, so in the end I think it's probably for the best.

The one change I'd like to see - well, that I have any chance of getting through at least - isn't really a change to the system at all, just to the reporting. I'd prefer if the distinction between competitors who have entered every round and those who either joined late or dropped out is made clearer. It's always difficult looking at the table and trying to figure out where the actual bottom of the standings is.

There was a "Rookie" category in earlier years of this competition for that very reason, it is however up to pokerman to decide whether or not to include it this year. I for one wouldn't be against it, it gave people who joined late a reason to continue despite being well off the top of the standings.

Yeah I feel it's a bit like the qualifying, there is nothing wrong with it but let's spice it up anyways.

I love the competition and that's why I was happy to take over the running of it, if the competition was different then I might feel differently about it.

Regarding rookies I stopped doing this because it seemed not to serve a purpose, you become a rookie if you are late to the competition, the later you are to the competition the less likely you are to be rookie champion, so ideally for this you just miss the first round.

A rookie really is someone who does the competition for the first time like for instance myself in 2013 when I finished 5th, maybe I should have been rookie Champion back then? ;)

You make the 6th new player ready to give it a go.

As a note to players, especially new players, don't get discouraged if you make a bad start and then give up, here are last years tables:-

Round 4
1. Peter2673 586
1. hittheapex 586
38. coulthards chin 509
42. Exediron 496
49. specdecible 478

Final Standings
1. Peter2673 2512
4. Exediron 2464
5. specdecible 2454
6. coulthards chin 2446
32. hittheapex 2233

The lesson being anyone can finish second? ;)

Woohoo!

First, as always, big thanks to pokerman for putting in the time to run the game and compile everything (and also to HulkStrong before him and specdecible before them!).

Now, I would like to formally announce that I, once again, plan to blitz the field to an uninspiring, mediocre finish (as I have done every year the competition has existed!). And to Gothnak and specdecible and anyone else foolish enough to cross me, I plan to once again include you in verbal quips so devastating that they leave you (and anyone else unfortunate enough to read my posts) wondering, "WTF is wrong with this guy?" Yes, gaze upon my picks and despair, because if your picks are close to mine you will be disappointed in the results for that race!
