You know what? If you're feeling under the weather, it might be better to just cancel the entire round and save you the trouble of doing a write up...

Does it make you feel better or worse that I just look at your prediction and do the opposite?

Strategy for Spain: You make a prediction, I predict the opposite, and then you copy me. Guaranteed team win!

Portuguese Grand Prix
The Portuguese Grand Prix was won by Lewis Hamilton from title rival Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas.

Bottas led away from pole position with Hamilton slotting in behind and Verstappen following the Mercedes pair in third place. An early safety car was required as Kimi Raikkonen drove into the back of his Alfa Romeo teammate Antonio Giovinazzi (I bet the latter and Alfa Romeo have never been mentioned in this competition before).

On the restart, Hamilton was caught napping and that was enough for Verstappen to take advantage and move up to second place at turn one. For the next few laps the front three, separated by less than two seconds, pulled away from those behind to cement their podium positions. It was just a case of what order they would finish in.

At the end of lap 10, Verstappen made a mistake just before the main straight that allowed Hamilton the opportunity to pounce and overtake the Red Bull driver heading into turn one. This allowed Hamilton to chase after his teammate for the lead. On lap 20, Hamilton made the move that turned out to be a race winning one, overtaking Bottas around the outside into turn one.

From that point on Hamilton was untroubled other than having to overtake Sergio Perez who was running a long first stint. The battle for second place continued with Red Bull attempting an undercut on Bottas but it looked like the Mercedes had retained position, despite a slower pit stop. However the Fin made a mistake into turn three on cold tyres that allowed Verstappen to take advantage and overtake at turn five.

Bottas looked to be quicker than Verstappen on the hard tyres but a sensor issue cost him about five seconds, denying us the possibility of another on track battle. A flurry of late pit stops for the fastest lap did nothing to change the finishing order.

Points
There were six perfect podiums this week so well done to those who called that.

14 points – Icemanjee1, Tufty, Exediron, Espo, Mayhem, Bentrovato
8 points – F1Tyrant, Mod Titanium
1 point – Herb, JN23, Jezza13, Jenson’s Understeer

Individual Championship
In the individual standings we have a new leader, as Icemanjee1’s perfect podium takes him a point clear of F1Tyrant whose solid 8 points keeps him just a point behind. Those who scored perfect podiums all jumped up several places in the standings.

Everyone is now on the board with at least one point.

Team Championship
Team A’s double perfect podium catapulted them from fifth in the standings after Imola to the top of standings. They’ve opened up a seven point lead over Overrated Legends Racing.

Next time
The Spanish Grand Prix takes place next weekend around a circuit which some have noticed looks like a less interesting version of Portimao.

Spanish Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix for a fifth year in a row thanks to some clever strategy from his Mercedes team saw him pass long time leader Max Verstappen in the closing stages. Valtteri Bottas completed the podium but was well off the pace of the leading two.

Verstappen got the jump at the start and took the lead at turn one from Hamilton, with the two cars being as close as they could be without touching. The front two quickly raced away from those behind, led by Charles Leclerc who did a brilliant job of keeping Bottas behind. The stint was interrupted by a safety car but after the restart the race resumed as before.

Verstappen was first to pit, reportedly taking his pit crew by surprise, just as Hamilton was getting into a position to mount a serious attack. A slow pit stop gave Mercedes a chance to pit Hamilton the lap after and take the lead, but Mercedes declined this opportunity and ran Hamilton for five laps longer.

After coming out from his stop, Hamilton quickly closed the six-second gap Verstappen had built but once close, was unable to get close enough to attack the Dutchman. In a move that replicated Hungary 2019, Hamilton was pitted for a second time for fresh tyres to chase down Verstappen in the last 20 laps.

He quickly dispatched of Bottas and eventually caught up to and passed the defenceless Verstappen on lap 60, a move which gave him his third win of the season. Bottas was able to get past Leclerc in the first pit stop phase and ran a comfortable third place from that point onwards.

Points
14 points – Icemanjee1, Mod Titanium, Espo, Mayhem, Bentrovato, Jenson’s Understeer
5 points – F1Tyrant, Jezza13
1 point – Exediron, A.J., Remmirath

Individual Championship
The big movers are those scoring perfect podiums.
Icemanjee1 extends their lead to 10 points thanks to a second consecutive perfect podium, F1Tyrant remains second but the four behind scoring perfect podiums have closed the gap and finally Jenson’s Understeer moved from bottom to mid-table thanks to his perfect podium.

Team Championship
A second consecutive double perfect podium has seen Team A open up a commanding lead in Team Championship. THE – Turbo Hybrid Era moved ahead of Overrated Legends Racing into second.

Just three points separate third and sixth in the Championship, so just like in the F1’s midfield there is close and exciting battle.

Next time
There are still 19 races to go so everything is still to play for. Next up is Monaco, will it be another HAMBOTVER?

The beauty of it is that we get a team PP either way. I'm not sure it's a winning strategy over the course of a season, but at least it picks us up off the bottom of the table!
