P-F1 Team Pick 2020 game

Back for its second year, this is a game for F1 experts, where you need knowledge of the whole grid, not just the top finishers. You have to predict the positions each of the 10 teams' 2 cars will finish in, but without specifying drivers. You don't forecast exact finishing positions though, you just choose from groups of possible positions.
So you make two predictions per team, the possibilities for each are:

1 - win
p - podium (2nd or 3rd)
6 - top 6 (4th - 6th)
10 - top 10 (7th - 10th)
14 - top 14 (11th - 14th) (* New for 2020 *)
f - classified finish or non-finish outside the top 14
nf - non-finish, (i.e. retirement, disqualification, non-starter or unclassified finish completing less than 90% of race distance)

Each correct prediction scores 1pt. If both predictions for a team are correct, you score 3pts.

(* New for 2020 *) You also predict which team will get the Fastest Lap in the race by entering fl. You can only enter fl for one team. For this team if you get all 3 predictions right you score 5pts; with 2 right you get 3pts; with 1 right you get 1pt.

NB: You can make more or fewer predictions than would be realistic for each prediction type: I.e. more than 1 team to win the race; or as above, 3 predictions for the 2 podium places.

In above example: if the Mercedes drivers finish 1-2 or 1-3 you get 3pts for the team (whichever driver wins). If they finish 2-3 or 1-4 you only get 1pt. If they get the fastest lap too you get an extra 2pts. However if they get fastest lap but neither driver finishes in the top 3 you only get 1pt.

Please separate each team's picks with a space or comma. Also it would help speed the scoring if you keep the teams in 2019 Constructors pts order as above.

The cut-off time for entries for each GP is the start of FP3. Entries and changes are still allowed until 'on the hour' ten minutes before race start, BUT entries received or changed after the start of FP3 are penalised of 50% of their score. This is rounded down, so 20 or 21 pts would be reduced to 10.

The results will normally be posted several hours after each race finishes - and a bit later still for races outside Europe.

The game will run for each GP, with points added towards the final Championship result at season's end. There will be prizes for the overall podium finishers; most wins; most podiums; largest race winning margin, and highest race winning score.

The game starts with the 2020 Australian GP, but there's no penalty for missing rounds so new entrants are welcome at any time.

I would like to join if you'll have me. Somebody has to be last and it'll probably be me, so hopefully that is reason enough to let me in!

I like how this game is split into positional categories and teams; might give me a chance to predict some teams correctly at least. Those agonising decisions such as trying to account for reliability (ie. Are the top 6 all gonna finish, or do you have to put who you think would usually finish 7th into 6th etc.) are still important, but there still is a little bit of leeway when accounting for reliability and other factors.

Good to have you aboard! Yes, I share your frustrations with picking drivers. In forecasting (say) the top 10 I always seemed to pick the wrong Renault or Racing Pt driver to finish! Since reliability is really a team issue it seemed making the picks team- rather than driver-specific might eliminate some of the luck involved with DNFs.

Considering it is two weeks away from the resumption/start of the season in Austria, I was just wondering if this 2020 Team Pick forum competition is going to be run this year? I guess the same applies to all of the other forum competitions as well.

Or considering the jumbled season and perhaps people have other stuff going on outside of F1 etc., are the 2020 competitions going to be given a rest for this year?

I'm glad to say Team Pick 2020 will go ahead as planned. We start with the Austrian GP on July 5th.

After such a long wait it's going to be a pretty hectic few months of racing. Personally I can't wait.

That's great! Looking forward to the season. It'll be interesting if this delay has resulted in a bit of a mix up of the grid or the status quo from 2019 remains, and how the drivers are after this extended layoff. Going to make the first few rounds interesting to pick.

After a race full of incident and retirements the scores were low in Austria. P-F1 Mod won, getting Alpha Tauri right, otherwise only Remmirath scored a 3-pt hit with Renault. Elsewhere it was single points all round. Needless to say no-one expected Mclaren to get fastest lap! Those who included plenty of nf.s generally did well too.

Some entrants seemed to have missed the scoring system changes - ie category 14 for positions 11-14, and fl for fastest lap. Note too that although Kvyat and Albon weren't running at the finish they were classified as finishers.

Round 2 is the Styrian GP next weekend, also in Austria.

Looking over my predictions, the big takeaway is that I predicted far too many finishers!

EDIT: And I also just realized that I completely failed to absorb the ability to predict a top 14 finish. I'll take that one onboard for part two.

I called AlphaTauri as 10/14, not 10/NF. Was Kvyat still classified?!

You're absolutely right. Apologies - I had your Haas nf as an f. I've corrected it now.

I've come to the conclusion that retirements are the enemy of predictions Now for Round 2, the question is to trust the speed shown in Round 1 or not

A quick Google search for the Red Bull Ring weather forecast for Round 2 is for 29C and sunny for Friday, 18C and possibly chance of showers for Saturday, and 21C and sunny for Sunday.

I recall that Seb said that the Ferrari will do a bit better in cooler conditions, plus they have their upgrades coming for Round 2, to directly compare to Round 1's output. My gut feel is that Ferrari and certainly Leclerc, might just marginally head the midfield, especially if they qualify in the top 6. Don't think they'll have enough to challenge either of the Red Bulls though.
