Eifel Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of most race wins in the Eifel Grand Prix. Hamilton looked to have taken the lead at the start but aggressive driving from teammate Valtteri Bottas ensured the Fin stayed ahead. The lead change hands on lap 13 when a big lock up from Bottas enabled Hamilton to close up and overtake. Bottas retired shortly after with a power unit problem. This promoted Max Verstappen to second position where he remained for the remainder of the race.

The battle for third provided most interest. Leclerc retained fourth position early on and kept Daniel Ricciardo behind him with some good defensive driving but an early pit stop put him out of contention. Riccardo was in a good position to take advantage of Bottas’ DNF but it looked like we were going to see an exciting finish with Sergio Perez closing the Honey Badger down after his later pit stop and passing Norris' troubled McLaren. Norris’ eventual retirement caused a safety car which saw Ricciardo and Perez take on new tyres and enabled Ricciardo to bring home the car for his first podium in over two years.

No one predicted Ricciardo finishing in the top three so there are no perfect podiums but well done to Espo, Herb, P-F1 Mod and RustyRockets44 who all predicted Hamilton winning from Verstappen. There were a bunch of five pointers and a few no scores.

The main change in the individual championship is Espo moving into second position ahead of Mod Titanium and closing the gap to the leader to 11 points.

Drive Sauber extend their commanding Team Championship lead to 41 points.

We now move into the final third of the season with a race at another new circuit in Portimao.

Question for Imola which is the race after next - any thoughts on the deadline for picks? There is only one practice session so the deadline needs to be when that starts or when qualifying starts. Basically we either keep it as when the Saturday practice session starts as with all other races or we see some practice as usual and make the cut off as the start of qualifying for this race only. Thoughts?

Apologies, you did. I spelt Verstappen wrong when inputting your predictions into my spreadsheet so it hasn’t picked up the three points for that. I’ll amend the table later today.

I'd say when the Saturday practice session starts. Given it's supposed to be (even though it won't be) a 'more unpredictable' weekend I think it's only fair if we make it a little more challenging for us, too.

I've amended the standings in my post. Fountoukos13 moves into the top ten and Drive Sauber's lead is 38 points, not 41.

I agree with this, and not only because the solitary practice session would be 5:00 in the freakin' morning where I live! :]

I also agree with this (selfishly) for the same reason as Exediron. It’ll make things a little more spicy going into the predictions blind with no practice sessions.

Portuguese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton broke the all time wins record with a dominant display in Portugal.

The new track surface and colder conditions led to a crazy first lap where many drivers struggled to get the medium tyres working. Valtteri Bottas took the lead from Hamilton, there was a collision between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz jumped to second position from seventh on the grid. Sainz then took the lead from Bottas on lap two.

Sainz gradually dropped back through the field with Bottas, Hamilton and Verstappen overtaking him on three consecutively laps.

Bottas edged out a lead of just over two seconds when both first got passed Sainz but Hamilton started reeling the Fin in and took the lead on lap 20. From then on Hamilton drove away from Bottas and took the 92nd win of his career by 25 seconds.

Verstappen took third place, nine seconds behind Bottas. It was a lonely afternoon for Verstappen whose choice of starting on the soft tyres didn’t work out as he struggled for grip and pace in the first stint.

Those who went for what most would consider the ‘obvious’ podium were rewarded with a maximum 14 points. Congratulations to all the mods, Icemanjee1, Fountoukos13 and Bentrovato for scoring the first perfect podiums since Belgium.

The big news is in the Championship is that Remmirath’s lead is down to five points over Mod Titanium. Icemanjee1 has jumped from sixth to third thanks to his perfect podium.

A double perfect podium means that in the Team Championship, TBD gained 22 points on Drive Sauber to cut the gap to 16 points thanks to a double perfect podium. Team Mod move into third thanks to their double perfect podium.

Next time we move onto Imola for a two day weekend! As a certain football manager used to say, it’s squeaky bum time.

As there is only one practice session next weekend, the deadline for picks will be the start of that session.

Practice starts at 10am on Saturday local time, that's 9am in the UK.
