It was a lacklustre Ferrari performance, so in general those who played safe and had Mercedes to win scored well. However as the only one to get Kubica's non-finish PF1-Mod scores a first win, shared with Charles LeBrad for getting 3 other teams right too. Charles alone got Renault correct this time. Mclaren and Renault's double points finishes helped many, however Kvyat's last lap penalty which cost him 10th place lost everyone 2pts.

Overall Charles Le Brad recovers 2nd place after a poor race for Tim003 and Jenson's Understeer. Herb drops to 6th, leap-frogged by Icemanjee1 and Robins13. With the table closing up it's conceivable that any of the top 6 could win!

After a chaotic last few laps for the leading teams Brazil was not surprisingly a low scoring race. Only Herb scored even 1 point for the top 3 teams, going for a Verstappen win. Otherwise with many of the middle order teams inheriting top 6 and podium places it came down to who scored highest with the lower order finishers. Jenson's Understeer did best with Haas, Racing Point and Williams correct, and took the win. The three players tied for 2nd place got 2 of those 3 teams right. Charles LeBrad did too, but missed out completely with Torro Rosso.

Overall Jenson's Understeer ties Charles Le Brad's for 2nd place but Tim003 maintains a good lead. Icemanjee1 moves clear of Robins13 in 4th.

Round 21, the final round, is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 1st.

As I'm in contention, could someone who's not in the top 4 volunteer to accept the forecasts of the top 4 - Tim3003, Charles LeBrad, Jenson's Understeer, Icemanjee1 - via personal message please? If you then just post them some time after the race has started I'll then score it as usual.

Ferrari and Stroll, though classified, are listed as DNF on the FIA results, is that relevant?

I'll take the results if you want.

Thanks for that.

Re the Brazil results: on the FIA site, both Ferraris and Stroll are classified, despite being listed as DNF. My thinking was that this effectively makes them finishers. This (I think) is the rule I have used in all races so far. See Germany where Bottas was NF but Gasly was F in P14, despite both being DNF.

https://www.formula1.com/en/results.htm ... esult.html

According to Wikipedia the rule is that any driver completing 90% of race distance is classified.

It highlights how out of date and terrible the 'classified finishers' rule is. Back in The Day -- when less than the number of points positions would often finish a Grand Prix -- it made sense. Now, it does little except for muddy the statistics. Nobody thinks of someone who made it 90% of the way through a GP as having done something special these days.

In Spain 2001 Hakkinen retired from the lead on the last lap and was classified 9th, a lap down but first of the lapped runners. Those points could have made a difference in the championship had it happened today.

The problem is, if you scrap 90%, where does the cut-off go? 95%, 98%. There are often finishers 2 or 3 laps down...

Same lap as the last finisher?

I'll admit I just don't like it because I really like stats, and it throws up garbage stats.

But what if a car has a mechanical issue during the race, spends 15 minutes in the pits, and then rejoins and finishes 10 laps down?

Nobody does that in F1, so it's a pure hypothetical. If this was IndyCar, then sure.

I stand corrected on how the scoring is done for the game, but I do wonder if the FIA should change the rules so that to be classified, you must cross the line after the winner has done so. Which would mean Hakkinen would still be 9th in Spain after running out of fuel, but with DNF next to his name. But then you get into the mess of classified cars behind non-classified cars. Maybe just no one classified behind the lowest finisher?

Yes but what is a 'finisher'? You have to distinguish between those who are classified as finishers and those who aren't. That's the problem. The 90% rule is effectively saying that anyone who does 90% of full race distance is classified as a finisher, regardless of whether they're actually running when the winner crosses the line. Those completing less than 90% are not finishers. I know it seems a bit odd but I can't see any other way that copes with all possible situations - which a rule has to do.

A finisher is someone who makes it to the line on their final lap. Pretty simple.

Alternatively, we could go with the IndyCar method that makes no real distinction between finishing and not finishing. We already have a running order, so we just apply points to the top ten and don't care about who really 'finished'. Because in modern F1, generally the only people who actually finish a Grand Prix distance are Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. Everyone else is basically some form of non-finisher. In IndyCar, I think the only way you can be classified as retired is if you're not still running on track at the end.

(arguably, this should get removed from the F1 Team Pick Game and turned into a thread on the main forum at this point!)

P-F1 Mod wrote:A finisher is someone who makes it to the line on their final lap. Pretty simple.
So what if the lowest finisher's final lap is lap 55 in a 60-lap race - because they spent time in the pits. And another car managed 58 laps but then its engine failed. You either have an unclassified DNF listed ahead of a classified finisher, or you have to say the car DNF-ing after 58 laps finishes behind the one who only did 55...

With little incident and 19 finishers Abu Dhabi produced some high scores. The win was shared between Jenson's Understeer, Tim3003 and Exediron, all getting 7 teams right including all top 3 teams, and all regretting Hulkenberg's loss of 10th place on the last lap! Had Stroll finished too a perfect 30 point score was possible. Those three were 4 points clear, but it was close too behind.

Overall Tim3003 maintains a 6 point lead, Jenson's Understeer moves clear of Charles Le Brad for 2nd place, and Exediron takes Herb for 6th place.

Well done to all the prize winners, and thanks to all who took part.

The PF1 Team-pick competition will be back in 2020, for the Australian GP, March 15th!

Provisional rule changes for 2020:

New Fastest Lap category - FL:
For ONE team, as well as the 2 car picks, players can choose FL . Points for that team will be:
  • all 3 picks right - 5pts.
    2 picks right - 3pts.
    1 pick right - 1pt.
For each car, the categories will be:
  • 1 - 1st
    P - 2nd or 3rd
    6 - 4th - 6th
    10 - 7th - 10th
    14 - 11th - 14th (new) *
    F - 15th - 20th
NF - non-finish or unclassified finish completing less than 90% race distance; disqualified; non-start.
* I think it's currently too easy to choose F, F for the teams near the back of the grid and often score well. Adding 14 will make it trickier I hope!

Any comments and suggestions are welcome.
