Hi guys,

I was thinking, we have a lot of prediction competitions going on for race results, but not so much for qualifying. I realise the top 4-6 are far more static on Saturday than Sunday, but at the same time the midfield and back end of the pack can put in a lot of surprises over one lap that they can't manage in the race.

I was thinking of a points system that matches Pick 10 - so get your prediction within 9 places, your prediction scores. The main difference being that all 20 grid slots are part of the competition. Entries would be expected before the start of FP2 each weekend, allowing basically a shakedown FP1 session as the only benchmark by which to judge. That should keep a balance between insight and instinct among predictions.

I was hoping to start this from the Belgian Grand Prix, so we'd have a 9 race championship this year and shake out the bugs for 2019.

Thoughts?

Ill give it a go.... maybe spilt the brackets into who will be knocked out q1 & q2 then who will finish in what order for q3

That would certainly simplify the lower half of the field for points - say, 10 points for each right answer in Q1/2 and then the 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 for Q3.

I'm cautiously interested, but concerned that I might be exceeding the load of F1 forum games I can actually keep track of if I add another...

If we get less than 6 people sign up I'll can the idea anyway, so far there's two so you can breathe easy

I'm trying to keep myself to 2-3 this year. Last time I had to try remember 5-6 different things to do before the weekend, all with different cut off times, just got silly.

I'd be up for this one as my 3rd though

I'd love to play, as have always loved qualy session and results. i'll have a disadvantage from the States, however, as FP1 is usually in middle of the night, so I'll lose out on feedback from that session. would cut-off for entry prior to FP3 cause a big problem?

Not at all, before FP3 makes more sense in a lot of ways. I wouldn't want to go later than that because FP3 is the qualifying simulation session. Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the rules change. It makes sense to have a larger time window to make your picks, you still have a solid deadline, and everybody has the same info, including FP2 crashes/car problems.

Possible 500 points per race (qualy) should make for some large scores. Race picks for 10th who barely miss and finish 11th is always a bummer. Here, you'll still get your 18, and maybe even Stroll will score me some points from time to time.

Why the delay until Belgium? You need help counting scores?

Can we please have an official break down of the rules and scoring just so everything is clear

Submit predictions before the start of FP3 every weekend, naming:

5 Q1 dropouts
5 Q2 dropouts
and the top 10, ranked in order.
Each driver may only be named once.

The 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 score, from 0 to 9 spots away from a right answer, applies to the top 10, with a further 10 points for each Q1 and Q2 dropout called correctly. In theory 350 points are available per race.

The thread was set up last year but the game had almost no interest. As an all season thing, we're doing better.

If a Williams makes it out of Q1, a lot of people are going to be looking pretty stupid...

Interesting opening round! I was looking at the predictions thinking we were all in the same kind of ballpark, but there's an 80 point swing from first to last!

Nobody scored points with the following drivers:

Gasly (a lot of people predicted he'd qualify 7th, and anyone putting him just one place lower would have got a point, but none of us saw that coming!)
Norris (I don't think anyone really expected a McLaren to get into the top 10, I only put Sainz there out of optimism!)

The real clincher was calling the top 5 cars in the right order. Nobody expected much variation in which 5 cars would lock out the top quarter, but the order was key. The best score from that part of the field was the maximum 125; the worst was 84. Those belong to first and last in the standings right now. But it's only the first round, that's not even 5% of the season yet!

Having done so poorly in last year's pick 10 (after doing reasonably well in my rookie year, two years ago), it's nice to score well in the opening round of Qualy Predicts 2019. Especially against the big guns. Let's just hope I can keep the crow off my plate going forward.

Being able to watch FP1 and FP2 clinched it, along with the post-practice driver interviews and body language. There were many important clues.

And of course my pick 10 selections are now trash. Eight tenths for Mercedes? Come on! Who the hell knew that was coming?

Gents, it's already shaping up to be a great year. When Gasly stops being stupid, the young guys, including Leclerc, are going to put on quite a show. Kudos to Lando -- I had a feeling about him -- and Albon and Giovinazzi are going to soon be lurking for Q3's themselves.
