2017 SPANISH GRAND PRIX RESULTS

It was another chaotic race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, though with a very different result from last year's lottery. As has been the case at every race so far this year (except for a wild prediction one time by mcdo which netted a perfect podium), the podium predictions were all filled by the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers. With one of those drivers out at the first corner, and another eliminated with engine trouble by the halfway point, it became clear early on that no perfect podiums were to be snatched. Not a single entrant had believed in Daniel Ricciardo's ability to snatch third.

However, the fight between Vettel and Hamilton for the top step of the podium was crucial. With the split trending heavily in the direction of a Hamilton victory, the majority of the field was rewarded with at least some points when the Brit duly came home first. Among those who had sprung for Hamilton in first however, a significant number had also placed his teammate second. This was not to be the case, and the four predictors who placed Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in second came away with the win.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Place - 8 points
Black_Flag_11, Icemanjee1, Mayhem, TheDamus

Second Place - 5 points
Exediron, Jenson's Understeer, Jezza13, mcdo, Remmirath, Ruste13, TypingChicane

Third Place - 3 points
Bentrovato

The Rest
cm97, Fountoukos13, Herb, Lotus49, robins13, theferret 0 points

Did Not Start
A.J.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the absence for another race of any perfect podiums from the competition, this was generally a fairly high scoring round, unlike last time out in Russia. Crucially, however, it was only so for one of the two drivers vying at the top of the table.

With TheDamus sharing in the join win and Herb failing to score, the championship picture has swung decisively towards the Drive Sauber lead driver; TheDamus now leads the championship on 34 points, with a 6 point cushion behind to another of the round's winners, Icemanjee1. The misery doesn't end there for Herb, however; by sharing in the round win, Black_Flag_11 is able to jump from 8th all the way to 3rd, beating Herb on tiebreakers by virtue of this joint win. TypingChicane is also a member of that tussle, losing out to both on tiebreakers due to having no perfect podiums.

Just behind those fighting for the podium positions (so to speak), the midfield battle is intense. The biggest loser of the round, cm97, drops from 5th all the way to 10th, yielding positions to mcdo, Mayhem, Exediron and Jezza13 (the final one due to tiebreakers). Behind them, theferret leads the pack outside the top ten with 16 points, followed by Ruste13, Jenson's Understeer, Lotus49 and the only tie that can't be broken in the standings between Bentrovato and Remmirath for 15th place. Fountoukos13 and defending champion robins13 round out the field, with neither having reached double digits in points yet.

Individual Standings - Round Five

1. TheDamus --- 34 Points
2. Icemanjee1 --- 28 Points
3. Black_Flag_11 --- 23 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 2 Wins)
4. Herb -- 23 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 1 Win)
5. TypingChicane --- 23 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
6. mcdo --- 21 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
7. Mayhem --- 21 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
8. Exediron --- 19 Points
9. Jezza13 --- 17 Points (1 Win)
10. cm97 --- 17 Points (0 Wins)
11. theferret --- 16 Points
12. Ruste13 --- 14 Points
13. Jenson's Understeer --- 13 Points
14. Lotus49 --- 12 Points (1 Win)
~ 15. Bentrovato --- 12 Points (0 Wins)
~ 15. Remmirath --- 12 Points (0 Wins)
17. robins13 --- 9 Points
18. Fountoukos13 --- 8 Points (0 DNS)
19. A.J. --- 8 Points (4 DNS)

In the team standings, there is another change at the top, with Drive Sauber taking the lead by a single point over Bernie's Bwoah. Both teams are led by a driver in the top two, with a teammate struggling for consistent scoring; the ability of cm97 and Remmirath to outscore the other will be crucial in this team battle going forward, as well as the performance of the lead drivers.

Behind them, and in a bit of clean air, Jalopy Racing is 5 points behind the lead pair and 7 ahead of the midfield. They are the Red Bull of this championship at present. Fittingly enough, and in keeping with the analogy to real F1, the midfield is incredibly tight so far. The next five teams are separated by five points.

Leading the pack is McLotus, in 33 points; behind them comes No Limit Excedrin Racing, on 32, defending champions Mind Your Manors with 31, and the renamed Sand Bag'n on 30 points. Fittingly enough at a weekend where Massa had one of his worst performances in a dry race, Massa Attack proved the loser of this round in the team championship, tumbling down the order to 8th and last on 28 points.

Team Standings - Round Five

1. Drive Sauber (Remmirath & TheDamus) --- 46 Points
2. Bernie's Bwoah (Icemanjee1 & cm97) --- 45 Points
3. Jalopy Racing (Herb & Jezza13) --- 40 Points
4. McLotus (Lotus49 & mcdo) --- 33 Points
5. No Limit Excedrin Racing (Exediron & Jenson's Understeer) --- 32 Points
6. Mind Your Manors (Black_Flag_11 & Fountoukos13) --- 31 Points
7. Sand Bag'n (robins13 & Mayhem) --- 30 Points
8. Massa Attack (theferret & Bentrovato) --- 28 Points

The fight for the Formula One World Championship is tightly locked at the top, and it's closing up here in the Top Three Championship as well. TheDamus looks comfortable right now, but fortunes can change quickly when Perfect Podiums are achieved. With Monaco next on the calendar, who will succeed in nailing that top three correctly, and potentially take the championship lead as a result?

We'll see in two weeks time! I'll be in Indianapolis cheering on Alonso from the stands, however, so the update may be slightly delayed! :D

And also a procedural question for the members of the championship:

With the seeding for the Knockout Cup about to be determined (assuming my honored teammate is still feeling like running it!), is anyone opposed to declassifying A.J. from the results table to avoid anyone facing a DNS and effectively a by in the first round? After entering the first round, A.J. has posted four consecutive DNS results. I usually declassify an entrant somewhere after somewhere around 5 or 6 consecutive misses, but I'd like to do it a little earlier this time to make things clearer in the knockout.

So if A.J. misses Monaco as well, removed from the classification? Any objections? If he/she returned to the championship at a later date, I would reinstate the points at 8.

I seem to have escaped with a semi-decent result in the 10 but I just can't seem to get it right here in the 3. I think i'll start just picking the same rather than trying to cover different scenarios and try that for a bit.

I always predict them the same, to begin with. But since the Pick 10 can't be altered based on practice, I often end up changing the Top 3 to something different. In this case it was better, but often it's not.

I can find myself changing around this one too but I'm determined to just keep them the same for the next 5 races and see if that works out any better.

(He says two weeks out, watch me change in Monaco after FP1 :D )

All right, great result for the team -- let's see if we can hold on to the number one spot! :o Hopefully I'll be able to start getting more consistent points here, now that my pointless streak at the start of the season is behind me. (Now watch me get it all wrong next race after saying that. ;) )

Not surprised that nobody predicted the exact podium this round; it would've been a very bold move to leave both Bottas and Kimi off it, and unless one was already doing that, it would've been perhaps an equally bold move to put one of the Red Bulls in. Monaco should be interesting.

Sounds reasonable to me. As you say, otherwise it could give someone a free pass through the first round.

Another good round. If Bottas' engine didn't go boom it would have been a perfect podium too! Hope I can keep it up and stretch my lead over the next few races. I'm doing awful in the pick10 but this makes up for it.

Drive Sauber is right where it should be as well. My team mate is due a perfect podium so next race here we come. Double championship here we come(jinx)!

I'm honestly having a hard time knowing who to go with. Everyone else's picks often look so much better than mine, yet the cards have just come up in my favour. So much can change in one round at this stage.

I'm also cool with however you choose to run your competition. Having run a different online competition before I appreciate how much work goes into this. Anything that causes less headache for you.
