I got about halfway through the season before I gave up. It's good, but it's more like a mini-series than the others, so isn't something you can just watch one episode of because the plot isn't episodic. I'll get around to watching it at some point this summer, but I'm not desperate to get back into it.

Unrelated, but I'm really into Community after Netflix suggested it after watching Kimmy Schmidt. Binge watching it like an addict.
I'm always wary of anything classed as a "comedy" I prefer dry humour to obvious comedy but
it has good write ups so I'll have a look but these days if the show doesn't hook me by third episode
I'm done.

I'm going to have a look at Black Sails first and see how I get on with that.

Back to the superhero Marvel and DC series , I think they're great they can get a bit cheesy in parts but that is in keeping with the comic books .

I gave Season 1 of Black Sails a watch a little while back - I liked it but it didn't leave me feeling desperate to keep watching it. Nothing wrong with that though!

Currently watching Hannibal, Jordskott and Wayward Pines as they come out. Season 3 of Hannibal hasn't quite lived up to 1 and 2 for me so far, although the latest episode got things back on track. It's a shame it's getting canned, but I get that it's probably too complex and a bit macabre to appeal to wide audiences. Wayward Pines I think is genuinely brilliant despite some glaring plot holes and Jordskott is an interesting watch if you want something a bit different and you don't mind subtitles.

My latest "What to watch when I've got nothing to do and there's nothing on' show is Falling Skies. I'm currently getting towards the end of Season 1 after struggling to get into it. I feel like things are padded out a bit too much but things are starting to move a bit quicker now. Worth sticking with?

I got fed up with it during season 3, continued partway into 4 because I wanted to know what would happen, but nothing ever did, and didn't bother watching the last few of episodes. Season two expands the universe a little, but then 3 and 4 regress and become too procedural and circumstances don't really change or progress. It was being written in such a way that it could continue indefinitely.

Black Sails is an interesting show. It's very much in the same style as other STARZ shows though, so if that isn't your thing, it won't be for you.
It is very, very similar to the short lived show Crossbones (but Crossbones had less sex and violence in it).

I know I ask this every 6 months or so but looking for suggestions for my Gran. She's gotten a bit worse in her mobility so I buy her DVDs to try and keep her amused.

She generally likes crime, and is a big fan of all things mafia type.

She already has:
Sopranos
Wire
The Shield
Boardwalk Empire (just got her 5th series)
True Detective
Columbo
Breaking Bad
Jonathan Creek

and quite a few others like the Tudors and The Borgias and lots of sitcoms. Most of the big WWII and stuff set around that time like Band of Brothers and The Pacific etc.

I've not seen some the latest "big" shows but was thinking Game of Thrones and Mad Men might amuse her. How complicated are they? Lots and lots of characters and subtle backstory isn't ideal though she still has good mental faculties. She doesn't mind sex and violence. She's not a fan of fantasy stuff, but I'm not sure how much GoT is just medieval fighting or if it's all dragons and magics and that business.Anyone got an opinion on those or, indeed, any other suggestions they'd be appreciated. I've already had a look at some on amazon but their selection is just so damned big it's a bit tricky.

I'll get her Better Call Saul when it comes out as she really enjoyed Breaking Bad.

Anyway, any opinion on the above would be welcomed by me, and by extension my Gran.

GoT I would guess might be ruled out by the number of pov characters. Imagine starting out with one family of 8(?) all with plots, each time they interact with a new character, that character starts a pov story arc. That's simplified but not far from how it all escalates. The fantasy is almost never front and center, it's mostly glimpsed as a foreboding "it's gonna get a lot worse" type thing.
I would suggest a web search of the top rated tv on imdb and work down.
As far as crime related, The Good Wife was pleasantly surprisingly enjoyable and technologically literate.

Dexter, Daredevil, House of Cards, all seem thematically appropriate. But I would suggest missing out at least the last season of Dexter.
Edit, also Sons of Anarchy, and Justified. The latter is great fun with characters I like giving my time too.

Liking this years Doctor Who so far. Partly, because I really like Michelle Gomez as Missy. Perfect mix of accent to go against Capaldi, menace and kinda warped humour for it. I liked the Master, but I love Missy. I also like how they are playing up the bizarre side of their friendship a bit more.

This weeks story has been pretty cool too. I liked Capaldi's first season quite a lot too. The Danny Pink thing felt a bit rushed and would have been better over 2 or 3 years of build up I think. But I guess that is the nature of TV. And I'm not sure if that series of Doctor Who was set over roughly real time or we warped forward in time a fair bit over the series.

I still think Matt Smith probably had the bulk of my favourite episodes of all time, and I loved his portrayal.

Maybe it's just me, but I got feeling that there is more filming in studio than before. This has been happening for some time. I know that Doctor Who always relied heavily on studios, but now they often stay in single location for most of episode. It feels a bit too claustrophobic. Also I think they used more real world locations before than now. Anyone else got that feeling or I'm just getting bored and whine? (oh and I haven't seen newest episode yet, so no spoilers plz)

New Star Trek coming to TV soon. I look forward to being disappointed with it for being too TNG-y.

In all seriousness though, I think they'll try and make it a bit closer to TNG than to Voyager or DS9. Which is a bit of a pity as I consider DS9 the best show they did (but also least Star Trek-y overall).

I just saw that yesterday as well. I was hoping that Star Trek Rouges got a tv deal, but from the description I saw on CBS's website it looks like it's going to be another series based on another enterprise (which isn't a bad thing).

The thing I've always liked about TNG, DS9 and Voyager is that it was really well written make it much more timeless than the original (which you can easily see was made in the 60's). I hope they manage to do the same with the new show.

I agree. I think part of that is just technology. CGI and budget go a long way. I did love in Enterprise where they find a TOS style ship and talk about how futuristic it all is.

Sons of Anarchy. Brilliant show. Been bringing on it every free minute pretty much. Up to Season 5. Not as good as the Shield, but very similar in feel in many respects.

Don't know of anyone's been watching Ash vs the Evil Dead? Only 2 episodes in but I'm really enjoying it. It's just like the films, really brutal, loads of fake blood, completely cheesy and over acted but just good fun!

mac_d, I loved Sons of Anarchy! I think I started watching it when season 4 was airing in tv so I a decent back log to get through before I caught up and every season had bigger twists and more brutal story lines so I was glued constantly. It was just when I caught up to tv it was so frustrating having to wait weekly for episodes and months for a new season when the finales were all so good! Hope you enjoy it all anyway.

Two new shows released on different VOD services today. Marvel's Jessica Jones is out on Netflix, which seems to be similar in tone to Daredevil (which is superb if you've not seen it), and The Man in the High Castle is out on Amazon Prime.
For those not familar with TMITHC, it's based on a Phillip K Dick story about the world if Japan and Germany had won WWII and invaded the USA. It's well worth watching, if only for the visuals. It's definitely worth watching for more than that though.

Jessica Jones looks a little interesting.

However, as a guy trying to watch all the comic book stuff that is coming out I have a request for Marvel and DC. Please slow it down!

Arrow, Flash, Gotham, Daredevil, Supergirl (which I have 0 intention of watching unless it got the most glowing reviews ever), Agent Carter, Agents of Shield, Legends of Tomorrow, and the 50 other shows that are coming in the next few years. More once you get out of superhero/costume vigilante waters.

I'm one of the guys watching all this stuff and keeping the juggernaught going, but the superhero bubble I see as having to burst soon. I really think we'll be hitting complete saturation soon.

Jessica Jones is very dark. Even moreso than Daredevil is. It's absolutely brilliant though. As for Supergirl, it's alright. It's different from the other shows because Kryptonians easily beat most foes, so it's more about the life of Kara Danvers (sort of like the Dean Cain show was), more than the other shows like it.

Also, comic book tv shows are hot right now. The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead, Constantine, Dark Matter are all based on comic books too, and AMC's Preacher is coming soon, along with Luke Cage as a spinoff of Jessica Jones, Krypton, Lucifer, Iron Fist, and Defenders (which is going to be like Legends of Tomorrow but for Marvel characters), and spinoffs of Xmen: First Class focusing on the Hellfire Club, and Agents of Shield focusing on Bobbi Morse.

I've just caught up on the 1st episode of the latest series of Bron/Broen (The Bridge). I am already hooked! Well written, intelligent drama. The Scandinavian versions of The Bridge, The Killing, Borgen, Wallander-all great TV viewing! For intense, atmospheric crime drama, you simply can't beat a bit of Nordic Noir!

Also, i am very much looking forward to the return of "Luther" to the BBC in December. Can't wait! :)

Last week's Doctor Who, which I watched after Qualy today, was actually really good. Genuinely thought that was a well laid out episode and ticked the boxes. Of course, I'll need to re-review it when I watch the series again but that was good. Actually quite excited to see tonight's episode, though I'll probably be too drunk to stand by the time it starts.

I've kinda lost the will to watch SoA at the moment. Which is odd, given I was very close tot he end and enjoying it a lot. I just can't be bothered to finish it at the moment. Hopefully I'll get the will to watch it back soon, I really don't want to forget all the stuff going on and ruin it for myself.

This weeks Doctor Who was also pretty well done I thought. I rather liked the concept. And I'm intrigued as to where this is going for the finale. While I find the show, overall, rather hit and miss - the finales tend to be pretty damn good.

I really thought the Sleep No More episode was a load of old pish though. Really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Also, minor spoilers related to the Christmas episode, though it'll probably be in adverts etc

I've really enjoyed this season of Doctor Who. I hated the first Capaldi season, his character just came across as a moody, sarcastic and rude old man and just seemed wrong as a doctor to me. Since I've been watching in the Doctor has always been fun and slightly crazy.

I'm guessing a lot people thought that as they seem to have fully rewritten the character this season and given Capaldi a much more interesting and eccentric character to work with and has been much more enjoyable for me.

Luther is back! Just watched the first of the two part special - series 4. Idris Elba was on fine form as the brilliant, unconventional DCI John Luther. The only downside - no Ruth Wilson as the steely, psychotic Alice Morgan! That aside, dark, gripping and explosive drama. Loved it! :D

Anyone watching the new series, American Crime Story? The first season is about the OJ Simpson murder trial and it's been a brilliant combination of acting and directing. The latest episode about the discovery of the Mark Fuhrman tapes was one of the best television episodes i've ever seen!

Finally watched Daredevil on Netflix. Very pleasantly surprised by it, especially as Agents of Shield was so horrifically horseshit in it's first couple of episodes that it was unwatchable for me.

Not being on TV, it can be a bit more bloody than mainstream, with the odd bit of swearing. The plot of S1 was great, S2 was a bit off at the end. I preferred it when it was a little bit more realistic (didn't mind blind superhero guy and the rest, I just felt it was a little too much by the end). Supporting cast has been pretty good too. I don't think I've ever read an edition of Daredevil so can't say if they've done justice to side characters from that, but I enjoyed them.

I'm also oddly interested in how they manage to keep the actor's eyeline so well set. My eyes dart about so much I find it hard to imagine anyone being able to easily control that. Especially difficult to not focus on anything when moving your eyeline.

Might watch Jessica Jones soon. Saw the trailer for Luke Cage and think that show looks utterly pointless. Shows with protagonists whose primary skill or power is being tough tend to be pretty crappy and you end up with Kryptonite of something else weakening or else you can't have a cinematic climax.

Also waiting for Arrow S4 to finish to I can spend 18 hours watching all of that in a 2 day period. Haven't got around to Flash S1 yet. Interested to watch the Legends of Tomorrow show too.

Not sure where I lie on the Marvel/Netflix vs DC timing and episode numbers. The Marvel/Netflix shows are 1 hour and 13 episodes. The DC shows in TV are 45 mins and 22 or 24 episodes. There really is a lot of Superhero stuff dominating TV and movies just now. It's hard to keep up. I've missed a few movies and series and I'm a pretty big geek.

Took me 4 days in the end.

Thoughts in the spoiler bubble (spoilers for 4 seasons of Arrow, and a little of the other DC shows but nothing too much for them, and a few bits about comic books from 10+ years ago):

Finished Watching both seasons of Flash.

I'm a huge Green Arrow fan and I'm rather bias toward any show that has him done well. But Flash is a better show than Arrow.

It's a little bit lighter in tone... well a fair bit for the most part. I guess life is nicer if you are a superhero compared to just a dude who is good with a bow. Arrow is very dark and gritty comparatively. Grant Gustin is pretty good as Flash and he has brilliant chemistry especially with the dude that plays Joe. And, unlike Arrow, they cast his love interest to have chemistry with the lead actor (sorry, I really gripe over the Arrow casting being awful for the traditional love interest).

I enjoyed both seasons. S2 was considerably darker in tone and was less "villain of the week" and more story arc-y. S1 was probably a bit more fun, S2 probably told a more dramatic story. Either way I enjoyed it.

And Grant Gustin revealed the story for S3 will be a version of Flashpoint. Biggest issue I foresee is that Cyborg, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Supes and Batman are all pretty important and, along with Flash actually, they are all tied up in the Justice League movies. I wonder if we'll get discount versions of those characters. I'm expecting that Batman will be entirely replaced in the storyline with Green Arrow.

Stranger Things on Netflix is actually incredible tv. It throws back to all the good things about the 1980s. All it needs is Phoebe Cates for season 2 and it'll be complete.

Supergirl is part of the CW arc (which I was just reminded of via twitter), and Supes is making an appearance in that.
I wouldn't be surprised to see John Diggle Snr ending up being Cyborg, and Connor Hawke/Arsenal taking the Batman role. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the League of Assassins civil war between Nyssa Al'Ghul and Merlyn take the place of Wonder Woman/Aquaman.

They've also been to Bludhaven a few times, so might be able to get Nightwing and Batgirl along for the ride since WB/DC aren't using them for Justice League.

I enjoyed the first season of Supergirl and they did have a couple of mentions of Superman (they usually just used the name Clark, which I assumed got around some name trademarks) and occasionally had a siluette of him. But I had also seen that he would have some part in the new series.

I was also very happy that CW were taking the show over from CBS (I think) as it will produce more crossovers between the 3 shows, which have usually been a highlight of the past 2 seasons of Arrow and Flash.

Wasn't aware of the Supergirl stuff. That show never really enticed me to watch - was it any good? Did they handle it well? I've always found Superman, iconic as he is, to be a bit boring due to his abilities. (Though I absolutely love the Death of Superman comic storyline - first graphic novel I ever read). I wonder - Supergirl is from the Superman Returns universe? Will we see Routh, who works/worked for CW appear as Supes? That'd be convenient and also double as some stunt casting and would get a little press (not as much as if they got Cavill but let's be real).

huggybear - I could absolutely see it being Nyssa vs Malcolm actually. That's a good shout. That would perhaps be more of a shadow-war than the Atlantean-Amazon wars but I think they could absolutely make it fit. And the guerilla type war with a lot of civilian casualties caused by those two factions would probably fit really well into a more real-world feel (real world in the sense that Flash Tv show is a bit less fantastic than the DC comics universe). It'd also be a lot easier to do on the TV show budget.
I had two trains of thought on this matter. Firstly they could use two other characters that I'd consider pretty core JL members - Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern. But we all know they won't do GL. And I think J'onn looks a bit too weird. Your idea definitely seems more likely than what I was thinking.
Second - have a Mirakuru soldier army vs the League or Damien Dahrk or the like. So Deathstroke would be a major villain. It gives him an army of super soliders which fits the bill and let's us have more Slade. I'd love some more Manchester United Bennett. Flash wasn't Flash when Deathstroke was trying his sh*t so if Ollie wasn't about to stop him due to Barry messing with time then maybe he could have succeeded.

They could replace Cybord with either GL or Martian Manhunter but I don't see that.

Like minchy, I like the cross overs. The only downside is that Flash is basically just too far superior to Green Arrow. I love GA, but he's a dude with a bow and later a sword too. Flash, to me, is amongst the most useful superheroes as his speed is just so powerful. If I was Ollie, anytime I'm not going to easily win, I'd be phoning Flash and he'd whip over and sort all my sh*t out in about 30 seconds. That said, given they can't do that I'm all for the CW crossovers. That gripes me in the Marvel movies that they don't ever mention why in, say, Iron Man 3 Tony doesn't give Captain America a phone. Or ya know, Bruce Banner. When stuff has gotten really bad in Flash/Arrow they bring in the other guy. I do like that.

I'm wondering if we will see the Flashpoint universe get it's own little arc in the other shows? I mean, will Arrow S5 just be like Arrow S5 in the universe we know with no direct effects from Flashpoint or will at least a portion of it be showing the team as they'd be in the Flashpoint universe (assuming they are even alive)?

I still think that they'll do the ending of Flashpoint but with Ollie getting a letter from Robert. And I think that'll be stupid. Batman's relationship with his folks is nothing like Ollie's and it'll lose all it's meaning.

I've recently been re-reading a lot of my Green Arrow comics. I'm in two minds about some of the choices on the TV show. In one respect, I want them to stay true to the character and I like when they do stories similar to comic book ones I've read. But I've read the comics so I also want them to try and do new things. I put up with Olicity, possibly partly because EBK is drop dead gorgeous and I find her character appealing also. But I think they could have done a lot better with the treatment of Black Canary and the romance between her and Ollie. This, apparently, is a huge sticking point for a lot of fans of the show. In the end, they screwed up GA/BC as a couple before S1. I thought Amell and Cassidy had really poor chemistry together and I don't think it would have worked. I also think they wasted Roy Harper. And I really want them to bring Mia in. The GA graphic novels she's in are among my favourites and I think she has a rather compelling storyline.

Since we are talking Superhero stuff, looking forward hugely to Daredevil S3. Didn't care for Jessica Jones, though I only gave it an episode so I will give it another bash at some point. Really don't fancy Luke Cage at all (invincible-type superheroes I find rather boring and unappealing). Iron Fist I hadn't heard of tbh, I'm not a big Marvel comics guy. Not sure how I'm going to feel about Defenders as a result. Also, I guess Defenders means the individual shows will take a year off.

Routh is Atom in Legends of Tomorrow. Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Supes (whoever he is).

CBS had the first season of Supergirl, and it's alright. Kinda similar to Flash's first season where Starlabs
help Barry harness his powers, except it's about pretending to be normal with help from Jimmy Olsen.
huggybear - I could absolutely see it being Nyssa vs Malcolm actually.

J'onn J'onnz is in Supergirl, so they could use him if they wanted, and Vandal Savage is in Legends of Tomorrow, so they could use him for a super army of some kind of bad guys

Colton Haynes left Arrow because he struggled with the anxiety of being outed by the media, so we could see him come back as Red Arrow from Earth-2 or Earth-3.
Mia Dearden won't show up because it's an alias Thea uses when she travels with Merlyn for her training.

I really thought Legends had been cancelled. I couldn't stand the show. For some reason, I just assumed that if I didn't like it it'd be cancelled (no idea why I leapt to this conclusion). Anyway, was just an idea for a potential convenient guest start spot. Possibly should have googled it but I try and avoid any kind of spoilers. I love discussing potential ideas but I hate reading confirmed "what they are going to do" stories online. I'm a little gutted I found out they were doing Flashpoint as I'd probably have jumped on my couch upon realising it while watching the show.

I can't believe I forgot about Vandal Savage. Established character, a proper big bad, he's make a chunk of sense to lead an army. Regarding Martian Manhunter I didn't know they'd done him in Supergirl. Google image search suggests he looks alright actually. Cool. I thought they might do a Smallville and make him entirely human looking for the most part.

I don't keep up with any behind the scenes stuff whatsoever. I didn't know Haynes left the show due to anxiety over coming out as gay and that his father possibly killed himself as a direct result. Hope he gets over his issues and gets to be happy. Fair enough, I assumed it was a case that he was written out just to get Thea into the Speedy spot quicker.

And I recalled Thea was Thea Dearden Queen. That, to me, if it stops Mia being able to be used is swimming pool away a good character for the sake of a little easter egg. But like I said, I love Mia and so have a heavy bias on the go here.

minchy/huggybear/anyone else who might have watched Legends of Tomorrow - Was it any good? I think I only watched the first few episodes where they are in the 70s with the Dr Stein's young self etc. Does it improve? Did it take a while to find it's feet or is it simply a miss for me? Possible I was also in comicc book TV show overload, I'd just watched Arrow S4 then both Flash Seasons when I started Legends.

It connects some story arcs, but isn't really that great compared to the other shows. It does show a future Starling City with Connor Hawke, and Grant Wilson's Deathstroke which is cool. We also briefly get to meet Scandal Savage, and Rex Tyler, but none of the appearances are anything other than nods to the comics for fans, as they don't have any real consequence to the general Arrowverse.
Got to be honest, with the Felicity injury, I would have preferred for them to have done Birds of Prey. With Speedy, Huntress, White Canary, Black Canary, Sin, and various women who could have been Lady Shiva, with Felicity being Barbara Gordon, they had more than enough characters to get it done.

I'd agree with what huggybear said, it's not the best show, but if you take it with a pinch of salt and ignore the love interest storyline with Atom, it's a fun show. Just not as compelling as Flash or Arrow.

I enjoyed the first season of Supergirl. It is very much along the same lines as flash in it's light-heartedness. It's more about being normal and learning to use her powers than anything else and most of the villains are prisoners from a crashed Kryptonian prison ship which kind of nutralises her powers in a way.
