Saw Yes in concert Friday night. They were such a part of my teen years that I decided to spring for a second row seat and a VIP to meet the band after. With four long-time members there was an incredible amount of age and experience on the stage and they looked like they were still having fun and they sure haven't lost their ability to play! Took me back forty years, what a great evening. They played the entirety of Close to the Edge and Fragile. For old men, they looked pretty fresh afterwards, too.

Been getting into Nirvana a bit more now. Just brought Bleach and loving it!

What do you think of them compared to other grunge bands? I was always getting in to arguments at school because I preferred Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, STP, etc. I respect Nirvana infinitely, but I thought they sucked compared to my beloved Soundgarden.

To be honest I'm not a massive grunge fan, I just like Nirvana because I think the lyrics can relate to life and they were fantastic musicians. If I had to compare them, I would compare them to the Sex Pistols which were more political than musical in my opinion but there are similarities.

I can see that actually. They both very muched changed the musical landscape. I will also say that Dave Grohl is one of the most talented and entertaining people I have ever seen. Seems like a genuine nice guy, and I love his work in the Foos. I always got the aura that Kurt was a bit of an a.rse (at least his wife was) but there's no denying his talents.

His wife definitely was and I know many fans hated her, there's even rumours that she murdered him but I doubt they're true. Kurt wasn't really an pickle, just a strange character I think. He was a nice fellow though, just look at this video:

On the weekend I was going through how many ppl had sampled an old Chilean band called Los Ángeles Negros (the missus, aptly named Pisco Sour here, is from Chile).

The new Slash album is out (hooray) and it sounds awesome. Far superior Apocalyptic Love. BUT it's 17 songs long. Now, I like me a double album (the vinyl is 2 discs), but I'm not really sure this is the band for that. I felt the same about Use Your Illusion I and II. A few songs in, and the lyrics aren't as strong as I know Myles Kennedy can produce. If this is going to continue for 17 tracks, I'm a bit worried. Really enjoying it thusfar, it's a kick donkey rock and roll record, and World on Fire is the best thing this band has ever put out. But I'm not sure I want two hours of it. It is supposedly more experimental for this band later, so I'll report back when it's finished.

Now about halfway through, and I've been drifting doing other stuff, but it's been quite varied thusfar. A few tracks are standout, and it could easily be a single album. Very party attitude with bits of serious stuff thrown in, as you'd expect from the guy behind Velvet Revolver and Guns N' Roses. Oh, and there's the obvious stripper song, which takes me back to the old Def Leppard/Motley Crue days.

Just found out the new Philip Sayce album is out too! Good week for me indeed.

I love Manilow. I went to see him a few years ago. He's past his best but he's one of the absolute all time greats.

The reason I got onto some Manilow tonight (I have a fair few of his CDs) was Family Guy did a bit on him. The best was actually rather positive for once and I felt the need for some Manilow.

Motley Crue have confirmed for Download next year, which means I'll likely be spending the money to go down. I've seen Crue only once before and was an excellent gig (and the rest of the night was pretty rock'n'roll compared to my normal evening).

So I got some Crue on the ol' music player just now.

Crue and Slash are the only bands I want to see at this year's download. It's Usually quite good, but Sonisphere blew it out of the water last year with Maiden and Metallica. I hope they do so this year to make one of them worth going too.

No offense to anyone's music taste, btw, it's just what I like

Part of the trouble with the two big rock/metal festivals in the UK is how often the same bands seem to turn up. I've seen Linkin Park twice (I love Linkin Park though), I've seen Alter Bridge about 4 times, Bullet for My Valentine are probably the band I've seen live most times now (I haven't ever seen them at their own concert). Metallica, Iron Maiden etc all seem to turn up every year or two. I suppose there aren't that many bands you can get to headline these festivals though given you need a really big name for each night and it has to be a big name.

Last year's Download was great for me. 2011 had an amazing Saturday evening on the second stage. Mr Big (not that much of a fan, but good), Cheap Trick (amazing), Twisted Sister (astounding, but they were even better in 2014) then Alice Cooper. Last year I ended up at the 4th stage to see Tyketto during the Saturday night main event slot. Then popped back up as The Offspring finished their album set and went into greatest hits - ideal for me!

Anyway, one of my friends decided that's the weekend he's getting married. So I can't see Motley Crue now. A few of us are considering getting a day ticket and driving down. A bit of a trek (about 5 hours each way, just under 300 miles). I get ill in cars too. At least I've seen Crue before in 2011 when they toured with Steel Panther and Def Leppard. Wild gig, wild night after the gig. Fond memories of that evening.

Now more bands have been announced, I would probably enjoy myself if I went. I'd spend Friday at the Second Stage for Black Stone Cherry, Thunder and Blackberry Smoke, Saturday is still meh, I'd probably spend my time between the smaller stages and looking at guys I've never heard of, might check out Black Star Riders. Then Sunday would be my main stage day, Slash, Crue, Idol, Tremonti. I could then leave before KISS and get out before the rush. That said, I'd still probably save my 200 and see about six different gigs of artists I absolutely love.

Thunder are great. However, in a genre of music where you have your Dee Schneider's, the frontman of Thunder does look more like a middle aged IT guy or something. Fantastic singer still, but he stands out in a line up of rock frontmen.

I can't make Download now. My friend is getting married that Saturday and while I was planning on going down on the Sunday for Crue, I now have a major commitment on the Monday and basically getting home from it would suck majorly and I cannot afford to f*ck up the Monday afternoon stuff. Kinda gutted as this was my only planned escape from Glasgow this summer and it looks like I won't get away.

Been quite good listening. Wanted longer videos as I wanted to put them on and forget. The reason I'm listening to them on YT is that my iPod finally seems to be giving up the ghost. The battery life on it sucks and 2 or 3 years ago the hold button stopped working so hitting it causes volume up or down, tracks skipping or pausing etc. Admittedly, I got this in Summer of 2007. So we'll call it 8 years of service, I can't complaint too much.

Apparently Motley Crue and Alice Cooper are playing UK this year on a joint tour, as part of Crue's final tour. Guess I'll be going to London on 6th November then. Thankfully, one of my good mates who will all but certainly be going to this gig is moving down to London in September. Free accommodation! A Glasgow date would have been easier, but this is a good excuse to go down to see my mate.

Seen them both before, Crue in 2011 and Alice Cooper at one or two festivals and his own tour. Both were very enjoyable gigs. I'm already getting excited. Got Whitesnake and Def Leppard around that time iirc too.
