'Borrowed' a spare skygo login from a friend to watch F1 when it wasn't on the BBC, but gave up because our broadband couldn't cope.

Good news is we've now just managed to get 20mbs broadband through a special (rural) community broadband project. :D
Bad news: my friend has given the spare sky login to his Dad. :-((

At least now the missus doesn't have to wait 6 hours to download her historical dramas and whatnot from iPlayer.

Annoyingly I seem to be failing at posting sometimes. I think I'm just an idiot and forget to press 'submit'.

Anyway, I said:

Just got an email from my boss.

My first research paper is going to get published in a fairly high impact journal. Very happy about this as it was rejected a few months back and we did a fairy cakes load of work to bring it up to a good standard to resubmit it to the same journal.

Got pulled to one side in work today to be told I'm being given 200 shares in my company - worth about £3,000 - as I've shown great attitude and gone above and beyond what's expected recently.

I'll take that!

Well, I have internet access again!

Moved into my flat. Got pretty much everything sorted now, with a few bits and bobs left at my parents house still. Got Richard Branson in today so have TV and internet which is quite nice.

Also, I was down in Bath for a conference this week. Bath is a very pleasant city to spend a few days in. I was only down from lunchtime Wednesday to lunchtime Thursday but took a midnight walk around after the conference dinner. I never considered Glasgow to be a dirty city, but Bath is certainly very clean by comparison.

Ever have a question haunting you for a long time?

I found out this evening that I totally cannot pull off a goatee. I hadn't shaved in a while so was beginning to look homeless or something. I shaved into a goatee and trimmed before realising I just looked like a fat guy with a crap goatee. So I shaved the rest off. At least now I know.

Positive in the sense of now I know. Next hilarious facial hair will need to wait until next christmas time I think.

Just got back from a four-week holiday around Europe and the clichés are all true. German people don't have any sense of humour, Italian food is fantastic, French people (waiters especially) are short-tempered and Monaco police aren't to fond of people doing track runs in skin-tight lycra bodysuits.

As much as I love tennis and ice hockey and all sorts I am so excited to just be able to sleeeeep. Someone get an ice cold red bull ready for me when the tennis starts, I think I'll need it.

So, I just came off the best and worst year of my life... I had an amazing trip to Europe following the Climbing World Cup circuit only to find out on the day I got home that my dad has been diagnosed with terminal cancer...
Using the photos and interviews I got in Europe I was able to start my own climbing magazine, The Circuit (https://www.facebook.com/TheCircuitClimbingMagazine)
My dad didn't live long enough to see the magazine but was excited by every update I gave him and got to see the final draft before he passed...
I got the first copies of The Circuit last week and I'm really pleased with how it came out. It's my tribute to my dad who taught me to always follow my dreams.

Today was the first day in a long time that it was still light (reasonably light at least) when I have left work. Sure, I left at 17:20 rather than my usual later time but was still pleasant.

Sunny two days in a row (in Glasgow, UK).

Therefore officially summer! (I operate a Summer/Winter seasonal calendar).

Here in Exeter I concur. It's been nice for two days and is supposed to be nice for a couple more.

Since then, weather has been rather dull up here actually. Hope yours was as nice as forecast.

On plus side, I met with my boss at 3pm and showed him my rough thesis draft. He seemed rather upbeat about how much I had done and how I had been constructing it so that's good. And my mum said it was okay to turn up at her house on Sunday morning at 6am for the GP! I think she thought I was kidding.

That "okay" was a legally-binding contract. Don't allow her to back-out of that one! :]

It's swimming pool with rain out there, full-on thunderstorm. Outside our house there is water about 5 inches deep tearing down the hill.

And you know what? It's awesome. Not because of the weather, which is dire, but because I braved it to get my dissertation results. I got a B :D

Hope I'm not jumping the gun, and everything continues to improve, but...

Still don't know the full facts yet because no one's been in a fit state to give them. However the story so far is that my grown up nephew (in Australia), went to the doctors a couple of weeks ago with suspected tonsillitis and was immediately rushed to hospital - turns out he had some sort of sepsis and necrotizing (flesh eating) bug or something.

In less than a day he was already critically ill, they had to put him in a coma because his organs were failing, and they almost immediately removed tissue from his (left?) leg, and opened up all his other limbs to check the spread of the infection. By about day two/three they were saying he had less than 10% chance of survival, and if he did, then it might only be because they'd amputated his limbs to stop the diseasing spreading.

Long story short; somehow or other he/they managed to fight off the disease, nothing was amputated, his organs are improving (still on dialysis though), they finally managed to bring him round (not yet properly with it), and the prognosis seems to be getting better every day - except he now has pneumonia.

Fingers crossed he keeps up the recovery, it was extremely touch and go for a while, but most of the news is hopefully going to remain positive - hope so for the sake of his wife and two small children.

My sister/his mum asked everyone to pray for him, I abstained because I'm not into that sort of stuff, but I'd never go out of my way to tell her. If she wants to put everything down to the power of pray, that's perfectly OK with me, it's helped her get through a very difficult time.

I had a good day today. I have a cold glass of juice on my desk. I have a nice pizza cooking in the oven. I got some Cadbury Buttons for a cheeky snack later and I'm going to play Yuri's Revenge which I finally got working on my PC (it's rather an old game). So yeah, nothing huge but I'm feeling pretty good just now. I'll take what I can get, I've been on a bit of a downer the last few weeks.
