So I wanted to replay the Mass Effect trilogy but decided against replaying ME as it's combat is a little lacking. So, I'll start with Mass Effect 2. Except, I loaned it to a buddy as, at the time, I had EA access so had digital rights to play it. So I could no longer play it, so I just played ME3. And it was great. Then I got ME2 back off my buddy. Again, I fancied it but couldn't really be bothered with ME so just re-imported my FemShep from my 2016 run. I did this despite knowing I wanted to do something other than my paragon FemShep Solider with Liara or Garrus romance. Finished it. Then decided I really did want to go BroShep so ended up starting Mass Effect completely over and did a trilogy run. So yeah, 3-2-1-2-3 was my play route.

Further, I hadn't done any runs on the hardest difficulty setting since my initial runs of ME2 and ME3 and ME on a new game + many years ago, so I hit up some Insanity. I'm basically now going to review games that I'm fairly sure everyone knows I already adore and absolutely venerate. To sum up in advance, I like these 3 games, a lot.

I forgot how good Mass Effect was. I was a little put off playing it again because the elevator/lift load times are a bit annoying and it doesn't have the same amount of constant emotional payoffs that the third games does. Add in the slightly questionable combat and I thought I'd be bored. I wasn't. My last playthrough was 2016 (iirc, when these 3 games went backwards compatible or thereabouts). I did a near 100% run. Insanity is easiest on this game due to the powers having individual cooldowns, and after a point you can be shooting your rifle constantly while healing almost instantly. Did a 100% run, or as close as I was really able to. I had forgotten just how awful Pinnacle Station was as a DLC. Pointless really. It's interesting how different this game does feel. There is a far stronger team human vs team alien feel to this than even in ME2, where you work for an exclusively pro-human group. And Tali's voice acting is a bit different.

Mass Effect 2. I struggled on Insanity a lot when first playing this back at release. It took me actually until half way through Insanity on ME3 to realise you really should use squad powers tactically. In addition, energy drain as a bonus power is phenomenally useful, though a couple of other powers might have worked for my Soldier Shep. I was astounded at how easy this was. I counted 5 total deaths that weren't just "being stupid" deaths from running ahead and being foolish. I doubt any level had less than 5 deaths on my original run. Missions against the Geth were especially easy. Only the Collectors really pose any kind of issue. I do have some criticisms. Enemies do so much damage and can push up so fast that your lack of mobility really is an issue. I feel it's somewhat unfair. If you have your back against the wall, you can defend ludicrously easy. Rushing you is really the only way to win. The mobility thing blew my mind, as I remembered it being closer to ME3 where movement and cover to cover movement was implemented far better. I still feel ammo was overly limited, commonly running low at the end of fights though mitigated a lot by using squad powers properly. This was a huge stepping stone for me on my original run, I was also surprised as the lack of Tech Blasts. Warp to detonate biotics was included in this game and I thought all the tech blasts and biotic explosions were in this game. I also take issue with the final mission. If Garrus leads the second squad he needs to be loyal to survive but Miranda doesn't. I'm a little bias because I love Garrus as a character but he's a proven leader, only lost his team due to an insider screwing them over. The final mission is up there on my list of best ever videogame levels. If you skip scenes, at least on Xbox One BC version, it can really mess with scenes. Don't recall this from Xbox 360 but I'm not sure how many times I replayed ME2 on 360 skipping scenes (something I only do when I remember a scene well, like playing ME2 twice recently).

Then ME3. It's in contention for the game I love the most, though I wouldn't love it as much in isolation as part of it is the development of characters and settings over the trilogy. Again, the bonus power - Energy Drain for me, again - makes the game a lot easier. However, as I'd played a boatload of ME3 multiplayer and had learned the benefit of tech blasts, I pretty much just used a combination of Incendiary Ammo and Concussive blast to fire explosion EVERYTHING. On my original run, once I had learned to use squad powers, it was Garrus to overload shields, Liara to stasis and a headshot from Shepard with a gigantic sniper rifle. Slow, but very consistent and effective. Fire explosions were much quicker, and Shep getting energy drain as a bonus power also paid off. Ammo still an issue, but I switched to using just the Prothean Particle Rifle to avoid that issue and for quick cooldown. this made insanity difficulty pretty simple. However, some issues I do take with the game. I adore the Citadel DLC, and it worked superbly as a DLC released months after the main game as a final farewell to our squad. It's poignant in places, it's also rather goofy too. It just feels a bit jarring to play it during the main game, especially if you do it right before the endgame. Thessia has fallen and the galaxy is f**ked, you've had your first real defeat and it's the big gut punch before the comeback and you end up in a slightly jovial adventure. I love the DLC but it can be a little odd. More importantly, in ME and ME2 any sidequests can be handed in at any point before the end of the game (or after actually in ME2). ME3 introduces the ability to fail these. It makes sense, but I don't think it was a sensible gameplay thing. I feel like giving us 2 games of training in the opposite then switching it was a poor plan. The London mission at the end, between stepping foot back on Earth until the end of the mission is superb too. I'd put it on my list of best levels too. However, when Bioware altered the ending because everyone apart from me hated it, they have your squad get picked up from in front of the reaper. Your ship flies down, and lingers for far too long while you say an emotional goodbye if your romantic partner is there. It really breaks with the logic of the plot at that point. That said, I do love the addition of refusing to use the catalyst dooming everyone to brutal extinction at the hands of the Reapers. It's a war against unstoppable killing machines, the unstoppable killing machines should win. Getting as far as you did involved beating ludicrous odds. I really dig it as an ending that your Shep is known in the future thanks to Liara's beacons and you motivate the destruction of the reapers and breaking of the cycle but it wasn't possible in your lifetime. I
think Shep would take that deal.
Also, I know I'm a little bias to FemShep over BroShep but I really felt it this time having to listen to Mark Meer. It's not that he's bad, it's not the acting so much as I just prefer Jennifer Hale's voice. The exception being the final lines of Citadel DLC and the final lines of the game if you refuse to use the catalyst, I do feel she packs a lot of subtle emotion into them brilliantly.

On a more personal note, these games hit me hard. I've been gaming as probably my primary hobby/passtime for about 20 years now but I get very little out of it these days. It's difficult to explain how much effort it takes sometimes to play a game. Often, I feel it's more like a chore and better than just staring at the wall. It's symptomatic of a bunch of other issues I have in my life how little enjoyment I get out of most games. Even the games I have loved in the last few years - Walking Dead S2, Life is Strange and the like haven't quite left me truly escape the way I used to. The closest I've come was back in the spring when I played throught he Ezio Collection of Assassin's Creed games. But playing these 3 Mass Effect games either re-ignited that spark within me or let me feel it again the way I used to, Let me forget the miserable, monotony of my life and let me truly experience something, let me go along for the ride. I feel like I felt the way I used to when I'd play games and reminded me somewhat of why I fell in love with gaming. Maybe that's silly and overly emotional but in my head to feel that way was beautiful.

F1 2019 will be out early this year. It releases on June 28! There also seem to be a lot of new features due to the increased cooperation with Liberty Media. Livery customization, driver customization and even Formula 2! Very positive signs.

I think everything you put in that post means it's an improvement on the old games which went downhill since 2012!

So been playing Apex a lot recently, really like the feel of it, just so polished compared to something like Pubg. Can't stand Fortnite due to the building aspect so it's a nice option to have. Just picked up Division 2, haven't really had a grindy loot game for a while so should be covered for a few months now between them.

Nah, they have come back since 2016. The last few have been pretty good and they now have a 2 year development cycle (two teams working simultaneously) which means that we should see a lot more features added to the game.

Busy gaming month for me. Life is Strange 2 finally got finished (it was on schedule, it just took ages between Episode 1 and Episode 5) so I got a month of Game Pass for £1 and decided to get my money's worth.

Life is Strange 2 - Slow start, got really good. Not as good as Life is Strange was. 8.5/10

Outer Worlds - I don't get it. I don't see why folks seemed to love this game so much. In every facet it seemed to be good but not great. That's not saying it's poor, I just thought it was pretty medicore. I didn't much care for the level up system. The combat was okay but uninspired. The story was pretty generic. The side characters weren't all that interesting. 7/10

Then I looked up what games were quick on Game Pass.

Old Man's Journey - Fun enough. Right length (<2 hrs) as it didn't have an abundance of cool stuff. Was enjoyable though. 7/10

The Garden's Between - Also quite fun. I like a puzzle game and this was simple but quite fun. Very short but amused me. Also a 7/10

Tracks - The Train Set Game - It's a simulator for those little wooden train tracks you might see a child play with. I'll admit, I was motivated more by the fact I could get all the achievements in a few hours. It was kinda cool but I can't foresee ever paying specifically for this. 5/10 since it was free.

Tacoma - Now, the style of game you might call "walking simulator" is one I rather enjoy. You just wander around and uncover a wee story. I quite liked this one. 7.5/10

Wandersong - Did not enjoy. Not a bad concept though, just not my cup of tea. 5/10

What Remains of Edith Finch? - Another "walking simulator". However, this is how you tell a story. It was pretty clever in it's chapters all being a bit different. I thought it was a cool story and it's 75 or so minutes of a pleasant experience. I really did enjoy this one a lot. Not for everyone, but surprised me in how I enjoyed it. 9/10

Then I've hit up some old games. I bought Witcher 3 a few years ago when it was on sale. I decided to play it, but I also have Witcher 2 (360) which is n the BC list.

Witcher 2 - After first starting in 2013, I decided to restart. It took me a LONG time to get into it. The first half of the game I was just going through the motions trying to get it done. I did get rather into it by the end though. The only thing I'd criticise is that it gives no real backstory to the events going on. I was pretty lost early on when it's this region fighting this other region, while another faction is off in another region doing another thing. And I had no idea what Geralt was all about etc. I did get into it by the end and began to dig the combat system. 7/10

Witcher 3 - This game was well received and massively lauded at the time it came out. I felt this was all rather deserved. The plot was mostly simple to understand. I liked the characters. I enjoyed the gameplay. The side-mini-game-thing, Gwent is one of the better ones in an RPG, though it's not Triple Triad from FF8 level (and doesn't have the brilliant music that minigame had). However, one thing really irked me. If you do a quest that's a much lower level than you, you get greatly reduced experience. But it's open world, so by ging a lot of the side stuff and clearing points of interest on the map, you end up over-levelled relative to the main plot then get 2 or 3 EXP for a mission, when it takes 1000/1500/2000 EXP to level up depending on your level. If the EXP to level increases, I feel like the reward should have been left the same. Still not a huge fan of the level up system, though better than Witcher 2's. That said, very well written game. I do think my romance option wasn't what the game really wanted me to do, but made sense for someone who did W2 then W3 without knowing any of the overall Witcher plot beyond those games. Long game, but I would strongly recommend this game. 9.5/10

That's my last 6 weeks of obsessive gaming.

Damn that's quite the list, and here I am still with the same "to play" list as I had this time last year, more or less

Just finished Red Dead Redemption 2, amazing game, it's been so long since I played the early stuff I kind of want to go back and replay it again. I'll resist the urge though and probably wait a year or 2 before revisiting.

Next up is RDR1, since RDR2 is the prequel and it's been a long time since I played it, it only seems logical to replay that next. Then I have the latest Hitman game, which my brother got me for Christmas, 2 old Splinter Cell games I got in a sale a while ago, Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come Deliverance.

My problem is I've been sucked into Rainbow Six Siege which takes up most of my gaming time, I dont play single player games as often anymore so the backlog just keeps building.

Lockdown s been hitting up the best Final Fantasy games.

Spoilers for: Final Fantasy, FF3, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9.

Anyway, my FF marathon started with FF7.

I love a bit of FF7, but increasingly I feel like the game has aged poorly. The crappy graphics don't really bother me, but the game lacks so many little quality of life things that more modern games have. I feel a bit harsh judging it for that, and I don't think it bothered me when I first played it in 2003 when a lot of these things were sorted, but it did detract. Was able to clear the game and do Emerald/Ruby Weapon in under 40 hours with ease but I knew what I was doing so still enjoyable.

FF8. My favourite FF. I wanted to do the steam achievement for keeping Squall at starting level. This actually ended up being a comically easy run. The low levels mean all enemies do little damage, so I just boosted my HP, sat in yellow health and used a silly number of limit breaks. Then I thought abut if I could do Omega Weapon at whatever my average party level was rather than level 100 as my previous victories. This was silly easy. I love the game, despite it's whacky plotlines.
However, I have the Steam version and it has one ridiculous flaw that did my head in. At one point, you have to enter a 4 digit code. But the controller config on PC just says B1, B2, B3 etc and the way this is set up is that B1 = Number 2 for the code. B2 = 4, B3 = 3 and B4 = 1. Try doing that in the 5 seconds. Also, what it designates B1 is the A button on a xbox controller (X on PS). B2, is Y/Triangle, B3 is X/Square and B4 is B/circle, which is also counter intuitive to me.

FF3 - Plotwise, it's basically just FF again with a tiny bit of characterisation added.
The game was okay and mostly was a way to kill the time that was pleasant enough. But the worst thing is the last dungeon. It's about 3 hours long. Massive, confusing dungeon, then 4 sections each consisting of mini-boss followed by actual boss before the final boss that is a gigantic difficulty spike... without saving. I don't hold it against the NES version but the Steam version is the DS remake version. If not for the fact I'm a cautious person and copied the temporary quicksave I would have quit. This is not fun gameplay to die and lose multiple hours of progress.

FF6 - I feel like FF6 is up there on the list of favourites FF games ranked by popularity. I do not see why. I do not see the appeal of this game. Too many characters for one, so I didn't much care about any. A truly annoying minigame half way through the game that is surprisingly easy to end up in a pseudo-endless loop from not being fast enough to win, nor slow enough to lose. Seriously, I spent 45 minutes on this. And the plot was okay but Kefka made no sense. If a villain wants to destroy the world, fine - but they need to gain something from it or need to have reaosn not to care. Kefka seems to want to survive but also want the world gone. Just dumb. At least Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Kuja etc all had good, non-contradictory reasons for it. And for a modern remake, from GBA I think it lacks numerous quality of life things and also doesn't tell you what half the spells do. I just don't get it. That said, it did have a pleasant sense of humour and levity at times.

My FF hierarchy.
Tier 1: 8, 10
Tier 2: 7, 13-2, Tactics Advance
Tier 3: 9 (great game overall but takes 2.5 discs to get going, and it's heavily referential to the original FF I thought), 13
Tier 4: 1
Tier 5: 3, 6

Anyone playing animal crossing? It's kept me sane these past 2 months.

Also I platinumed the original final fantasy 7 on the ps4 within a week, my god the fast forward and the no loading times on the ps4 were amazing!

I've been on it since the first lockdown too.

I'm furloughed again so I've been back on since the new year. I'm still trying my best to get a blue rose after almost a year of playing. Hopefully only 1 breed away now!

As I don't live with my daughter and her mother works at a local hospice with a very bad covid record, I've not been able to go see her and playing with her on animal crossing and stardew valley has been great this past year!

(And so far my daughter and her mum have somehow managed to not catch it even with almost half the hospice staff off work and the hospice itself shutting for a couple of months)

Aww bless yeah animal crossing is a great way to virtually spend time together. I've not played it since lockdown 1 been too busy with work.

Although saying that I'm going to build a budget Gaming pc from tomorrow lol! I won't have time to play it but kinda want a little project by buying used parts and something that can finally allow me to finish a game of civilization!

Also managed to complete both overcooked games with the missus and 3 starred every level, over the passed few months when while the toddler sleeps lol. Tried to get the missus onto minecraft but the ps4 demi doesn't have a good tutorial so got very stressful and not fun straight away!

There are so many interesting games released lately that sometimes I can't decide which game to play. Lol. I can say for sure that when very angry, I play Counter Strike. If I'm going to watch a match, so I just make a prediction on oddscomparison.

I had a blast with Subnautica when I had Gamepass. Would fully recommend if you haven't played it before.

Edit: just realised when that was posted. Might be a bit late!

I got Mass Effect Legendary Edition for my PS4 so my wife could play it (I didn't bring my Xbox 360 with me to Japan - where I originally played it) - and it's probably the best value for money for any game I have ever played. She 100%ed it, over the course of 2 months. The remastering has been done with care, the game looks great, and getting all three original games with all the DLC meant there was huge depth of experience. It's easily one of the best story driven big budget games, and watching someone else play it, where I didn't have to focus on the task of 'doing the thing' meant I could pay a lot more attention to the background details.

If you've not played it before, it's definitely a game to get as it's now half price for three complete games.

If you have played it before, but haven't for quite a while - then I think it's still worth getting because the remastering adds an extra level of polish. ME1 also has a lot of refinements to the mechanics making the movement a bit more fluid (and the Mako has extra booster rockets to give you short bursts of speed to help with some of the mountains)

A few older(?) games/sims for a tenner. Not bad.

Plus you can bung some money towards a charity (there's a setting where you can send 8.50 of the cash to your chosen charity*).

*Can recommend CLAPA if you need a suggestion - they help kids born in the UK with a cleft lip or pallate.

I've been a long-time subscriber, for the few quid a month it costs I always get some hours out of one of the games, sometimes much more.
