There was a thread going on the old forum regarding gaming so i thought i'd restart it! This thread is for all your random gaming musings, wants and questions. It is NOT for "my console/franchise is better than your console/franchise" ;)
I'll start by saying i can't wait for Sniper Elite V2, GTA 5 and F1 2012 but only when i've finished the mammoth slog that is Forza 4 event list...

Really fallen out of love with current gen Pc/Console gaming recently. Have a stack of games building up that I've barely looked at, let alone played.

However, I've been running Goldeneye multiplayer sessions on an N64 emulator to show my younger brothers what we were getting upto when I was a kid/teen/adult on the gaming front. Still the best game for multiplayer on any console ever (except maybe Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast), and they loved it.

There's something special about dancing around someone trying to shoot you with a semi automatic rifle and killing them with a throwing knife to the neck that just isn't realised by the Battlefields and Call of Dutys of the world.
Also sticking remotely detonating mines to people's backs and blowing them up when they run past other players is another joy that hasn't been properly utilised in any modern game

Goldeneye on N64, what a game :) trying to kill Oddjob in a 'slapping' only match as Jaws brings back the memory's :)

Counting days to Mass Effect release day also waiting for Max Payne 3, Diablo 3, The Witcher 2 for xbox. Just ordered Forza 4 and struggling big time playing Forza 3 with pad after totally destroying steering wheel (don't drink and drive).
New Forza Horizon is coming this fall but I don't think this game will hook me up like Forza1,2,3 or 4 I can be wrong but time will tell anyway.

Have built up a pile of games to play since last summer as I have not had the time to play until recently. Of course, the first of the pile I chose to start playing was Skyrim and according to the game save clock I've racked up 90 hours on it, so I could have completed all of the other games in my list twice over in that time (it's probably 100 hours including the times I died and reloaded).

I've got Deus Ex 3, Gears of War 3, Modern Warfare 3, Assassins Creed: Revelations as well as a couple of older games I got on budget. I'm looking forwards to Mass Effect 3 too, although the second game was somewhat dumbed down from the first so I'm consigned to the fact it will probably disappoint.

I saw Half Life 2: Episode 3 listed as a game due out this year in an Xbox magazine, but I think that is probably just conjecture given how secretative Valve is about any game with the number 3 in it. If it does come out (or if they jump straight to Half Life 3) then that will definitely be the game I look forwards to the most. Despite the fact it is 8 years old I have still yet to play a single player game that compares to it. Yes, the technology has moved on, but despite the elderly game engine it never feels dated.

I got the official game guide, looked at the guide quite a lot, even when not playing the game :) its just that whenever I try to Skyrim somthing always comes up so I have not been able to put much time into it :) the whole world of Skyrim really draws you in and I can spend ages walking around doing nothing, probably the only game where I can do that :)

Skyrim is great, but in all honesty Fallout 3 and Oblivion represent better games. I actually consider Morrowind (GotY edition) to be the best of the bunch.

Skyrim lacked any real ingenuity. No interesting ways to kill in the Darkbrotherhood. No epic missions. No silly crap like having to rescue a guy from his own painting. All the little things and bits of weirdness that made Oblivion fantastic were done just a little bit lazier. The game lacks that final little bit to put it over the top. Don't get me wrong, Skyrim is easily a 9/10 game, probably 9.5/10. But it represents a slight regression in terms of gameplay.

Plus, making a mountainous land and not letting you jumpglitch up them like Oblivion isn't fun. Having to walk right the way round a mountain to find the right path is actually just annoying.

I miss levitate...

Btw, I saw Deus Ex mentioned. Human Revolution is a properly fantastic game. Story and narrative are awesome, great characters, great combat, great stealth. Every boss is a let down, but the game is a proper fantastic beauty. The DLC for it, though expensive (£10ish) is also fantastic.

Just finished playing through The Darkness 2 on PS3. Rented it and glad I did because I managed to play through it in about 6 hours.

Now I was a big fan of the original. The gameplay and shooting mechanics weren't exactly ground breaking, however the story, feel, art design and originality was fantastic and left a big impression. Not to mention Mike Patton's (of Faith No More fame) fantastic vocal work.

The sequel, unfortunately, is the polar opposite. Whilst the gameplay itself is tighter and more refined the story is fairly uninspiring, the artistic direction is good but not great (i'm not really sure cell shading suits a game called "The Darkness") and there aren't really any standout moments. Worst of all though it just doesn't leave much of an impact if you've already played and liked the first game.

Plus they criminally under used Patton's vocal talents this time around.

It's not a bad game by any means. It's perfectly playable and will keep you amused for a few hours. I've not yet played any multiplayer Co-op, which received a lot of praise in reviews, so that may be worth pursuing. However, as the original was the first game I played for this generation of consoles, it really did blow me away and the sequel just doesn't top it in any regard.

On a different note, I've not purchased Skyrim yet due to the technical issues that have reportedly been plaguing the PS3 version. Having pushed through, and enjoyed, Fallout NV despite the game freezing every hour and a half I do not wish to go through the same with Skyrim. Any PS3 players know if it's been patched and if it's stable?

You can jump glitch in Skyrim, I got to the top of Throat of the World before I even got the High Hroggar because I got fed up walking around it and I had found out earlier if I just walked sideways and jumped I could climb up almost any gradient.

I haven't played Oblivion, however the main criticism I have heard levelled at it is the terrain was very repetitive. The same was true of Fallout 3 - although in fairness, how varied can a nuclear wasteland be? - Skyrim on the other hand is a joy just to explore. My biggest annoyance with the game is how limited the dialogue is, it is so frustrating after my 50th trip to the general store in Solitude for the shop keeper to keep greeting me by saying "You were there at the execution..." with the same level of surprise as the first time I entered her shop.

I haven't had a great deal of problems with crashes and bugs, but then I am playing the Xbox version which by all accounts is the most stable.

To begin with I preferred the universe of Fallout 3, especially as fantasy isn't really my things, however Skyrim is just so much vaster than Fallout 3, not just in physical size, but just the interconnected ness of the world. Fallout 3 didn't have the cohesiveness that Skyrim has; now that is partly down to the 'everyone for themselves' nature of a post apocolyptic world, however it is more than that, Slyrim feels like there is a genuine ecosystem that extends from one corner of it to the other.

One thing I really miss from Fallout though are the notifications when your followers have died. It really annoys me after a battle to discover my dog died at some point (normally when I accidentally hit him or caught him with a shout) and I have to reload at the last good save. I had one instance where my horse got killed in a battle, but I hadn't realised because I had parked it clear from the action but some archers had shot him. My last good save was an hour ago so in the end I just dumped all my loot in a chest, left Lydia and Meeko to guard it, fast travelled to a city and bought a new horse. Thankfully I wasn't too attached to my horse, had it been Meeko or Lydia then I probably would have replayed that whole hour again (I had repeatedly gone in and out of buildings since the death of the horse so AI didn't have a pre horse death autosave, a rare case where Skyrim autosaved too often)

However, they are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things. The game world is just so well realised that it is a joy just to wonder around doing the side quests, or even just do nothing but slay the random world encounters.

I found this great video a few days ago full of great time lapses taken from the PC version of the game (although may contain mild "spoilers" depending of which path you intend to tread) but it really shows off the beauty of the game world:

@ Alienturnedhuman

I couldn't ever get the jumpglitch to work. Might have just been screwing it up.

I agree entirely that the world is nicer (my only gripe being the jumpglitch and mountains). But I felt the game as a whole added something with one hand and took away with the other hand.

Fallout 3, despite being my least favourite setting and style (I like magic and swords over guns basically) represented the best depth of characters. Oblivion at least has the excuse of it coming before fallout 3 by a couple of years or so. As a launch (or close to it) title for new consoles too. Skyrim had the adavantage of having 2 major games of it's style produced. And while I enjoyed the world, and still would unequivocally say it was the best game released in the last year that I played, I do not believe it represents a net improvement. Improving the game world at the expense of the people within the world is a bad move imo. However, I do acknowledge that my opinion on that matter may or may not be a minority opinion. And Skyrim is still an absolute gaming gem. It just lacks a tiny bit. Or, as is always possible here, I have just missed the zany quests. They did tend to be off the beaten path in Oblivion.

Fallout 3 genuinely made me feel guilty about certain actions. Kidnapping small children to sell to slavers. Crushing Moira especially cut. In Skyrim I'd happily slaughter the planet without remorse. I just lacked that final bit of attachment to the game world. Most games never even get close to simulating that emotional bond. Skyrim falls just short where Fallout 3 suceeded. (Note, I still haven't got round to New Vegas, no idea if it's better or not but since it was a different group making it, I don't consider it wholly relevant). Deus Ex actually did this well. I really cared about the actual core plot, and Adam and his own motivations. Plus, the game plays REALLY well. Dragon age and Dragon Age 2 left me in a strange place where I cared about my team, but not the rest of the world.

And I know levitate got knocked out due to having the cities load as separate areas. But I did like it. It's just a complaint I have, though I expect it would not return even if the technology allowed it simply because it would mess up dungeon design.

Anyway, Mass Effect 3 in 3 days! I can't wait for it... okay, I can but I am at fever pitch.

Only play FIFA, and occasionally F1 2011 online.

Split screen is fantastic. The longest variant of Nurbungring in Forza 3 has awfully long straight just before start/finish line. When you are losing during last lap you have to:
- put your car straight so it's not going to run off
- keep full throttle
Then you can try to steal the other players gamepad and crash his car

I've given up playing F1 2011 (PS3) online as there's just no point, you get taken out left right and centre.

That's pretty much my gaming apart from International Snooker 2012 for the iPad which is absolutely fantastic.

It's my brother's birthday coming up and I was wondering how you'd feel if you had this situation arise:

14 year old (who likes Halo, F1, Need for Speed etc on 360) waking up on his birthday to open his present from his (awesome) sister to find Forza 4. Would you be: A. Ecstatic, not come off it for days, B. Pretty happy cause you've heard it's good or C. A bit peeved cause it's not your thing at all? Answers written on the back of a postcard (or just here). It would help me SO MUCH!. Thank you.

The best multiplayer experience I ever had was about 10 years - when I was at sixth form - and I had 4 PCs networked on a 100MBs switch with pings of 0 playing deathmatch Quake 2. Although now I pretty much exclusively game on my 360, gaming is far more intimate on a PC because the controls are much more precise. Aiming with a console thumbsticks is like doing surgery with boxing gloves on compared to a mouse - and that's before you take into account the ability to toggle different preprogrammed modes that you can assign to hot keys.

Multiplayer on a console is more of an equaliser though, because you can look at the other person's screen to see where they are and the accuracy of the controls means you can never come up against someone with the surgical precision on the PC, however from a pure gaming point of view, I have not played anything that compares to the days of Quake 2 death match. Yes, the graphics and technology have moved on, but it's ultimately just turned in to lots of gloss.

Q2DM1, for example was almost perfectly designed. If you knew the map well you could figure out where your opponent was just by hearing the order they were collecting ammo and health packs - of course, that often to led to strategies like only picking up three stimpacks rather than four to trick your opponent into thinking you were on a different part of the map and then springing and ambush on the place they were waiting to spring their's. The game mechanics were simple - playing Call of Duty, while technically impressive, is now full of power ups, recharging health, and too many options - and not to mention the network latency. Yes, broadband may be 20Mbs which is almost at the same speed as my 100MBs network was, but the latency is still huge. When I play Gears of War co-op and join a friend's game where they are the host, it takes half a second between me firing my headshot and my console getting the confirmation from the host console to play the head-explode animation.

For that reason I mostly play single player now. I actually prefer split screen co-op multiplayer to versus multiplayer because I find console FPS to be dumbed down to the experience I had playing Quake 2. Plus, playing versus on consoles often means whoever's game it is is usually significantly better than everyone else - something that doesn't matter when playing together.

Well, he clearly plays racing games, so you'll be fine. I haven't played Forza 4 myself, but racing games are to an extent all the same anyway. If you enjoy racing games, you'll enjoy racing games. If you don't, it will have to be a blindingly good racing game to hold your attention.

@Ben, Co-op multiplayer is almost always better; Resistance: Fall of Man is wonderful fun. F3AR's co-op is useless though, because at the end of the game, whoever has the highest score (which due to the game mechanics is always whoever is Paxton Fettel) influences the ending, so it becomes competitive rather than co-op, and Point Man is massively disadvantaged.
I also agree on the extra gloss on FPS multiplayer and it being pointless. RARE and Free Radical had the FPS multiplayer down to a science, as did iD. I find the CODs of the world deeply unsatisfying as they are trying to make it feel realistic, while still having a lot of gimmicky rubbish in it. They haven't gone the whole hog like an ARMA II or 75% there like a Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (another absolutely fabulous co-op multiplayer btw). Either go all out, or make it deliberately unrealistic.

Still playing Skyrim a lot but I picked up Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning after being persuaded by some reviews and had completed most of the achievements in Skyrim.

At first, I was all set to go straight back to Skyrim as I didn't like the cartoon style and the arcade combat system but now I am into the game I have a completely different opinion. The game has a massive map (larger than Skyrim's) and I understand the underlying story has been written by award-winning authors (if so, it certainly shows).

There are plenty of RPG elements in the game - crafting, character development and of course quests - but this is less explore and more fighting than the likes of Skyrim. Think of the combat systems of God of War/Dante's Inferno/Conan with a massive area to play in full of interactive characters, towns, caves and ability to craft you own armour and weapons, and you're still not adequately covering it.

With this, Skyrim, Forza 4 and even UFC Undisputed 3 in my collection (if you didn't like the others in the series, give the demo a try - this is much better), I am not sure when I'll get time to play Mass Effect 3 if I get it!

I'm having to emulate it at 1900x1200 on my computer because I can't find all of my N64 control pads. It's a little odd using different controllers, but it adds to the fun.

I need to remember the all weapons cheat, so I can do the Facility with only throwing knives. Flicking off the guards hats with a well aimed shot is great fun, especially if they don't notice.

They really are that good! I was sceptical whilst reading through many user reviews but they really do immerse you in the game considerably. It also stops the gunfire/engine noise disturbing my fiancée whilst she does coursework so win-win for all, lol. The price for some of them can be prohibitive but mine cost £84.99 reduced from £119.99 on gamegears.co.uk. They're wired so there's no extra cost with batteries. Honestly, playing Battlefield 3 blew me away: akin to stepping into a firefight on the frontline.

GoldenEye was the first time I played with a friend for hours and hours on end. Usually we'd play games for about an hour before we hit the beach/mall etc, but after playing GoldenEye, we'd just hang out in his dad's garage and inviting other friends to come play. Epic times.

Have to agree with you there.

I have put Skyrim aside now as it became far too buggy and unplayable on the PS3 but I believe it has been patched so I will go back and try to finish it.
Currently I am play KOR-Reckoning and will have it done by the end of the wkend but I have kind of lost interest in it as it really does lack depth. I also have Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 on the go and I'm sure I will buy Mass Effect 3 when its nice and cheap on pre-owned.

Later this year I will cease all contact with the outside world to play Bioshock 3 and Resident Evil 6.

Real Racing 2 on iPad and Mac are great. Simulation, and a very nice career and multiplayer mode too.

I sit across the room with my iPad, my brother on the Mac, and we play wirelessly for ages, and we are very competitive, so it's a lot of fun. :]

Playing Mass Effect 3 on Insanity. It's harder yet easier than ME2. Shaping up nicely, can't wait to see how it ends.

All sold out online, damn. I'd buy a PS3 at that price. IS it in store as well do you know? Might nip out tomorrow and see if they have it cheap.

So id GAME definitely screwed then? I assumed it was heading toward shutting when they couldn't get new EA games (including Mass Effect 3).

Someone I follow on twitter works in one of their London stores, apparently he was told they are closing in 4 weeks (or until they clear their backstock), and to look for new employment.

And yes, instore as well. Probably all sold out by now though. Gamestation is owned by the same group, so has the same sales on as well.

I'll head in to work a little late tomorrow and see if they have any. I'd take just a PS3 for that price. There's only a few PS3 exclusives that tickle my fancy but I also need a new PSX as mine doesn't read FF9.

Even though I haven't played it much for serious gaming, I love having a ps3 so I can play Heavy Rain. It's both a wonderfully inventive game, and a wonderful control system. Not got that far into it, nor have I played it since November for various reasons, but it's worth not getting an Xbox for. Gran Turismo 5 is pretty stunning as well, much better than I was expecting.

Owning a PS3 doesn't exclude the possibility of owning an Xbox. Both platforms have great exclusives the others don't and are about the most evenly balanced consoles in terms of horsepower of any generation. Let's not turn this thread into a mindless "the console I happen to own is better than the console I don't own" flamewar.
