Has anyone seen Hurt Locker?

I was very slightly underwhelmed.

I thought it was fantastic, don't get me wrong, but it was hyped up quite a bit (by which i mean the reviews basically gave the impression that the movie was ground breaking and phenomenal and the best film ever!) i guess what i mean is, i was maybe expecting a little more then i got, although again, i thought it was a great film

I preferred it to Avatar (for the oscar i mean) which i thought was fantastic visual wise, but reasonable and a film, I didn't seem to get wowed as much as others did. Having said that, i watched Avatar on a night flight to Mumbai, so i might watch it again before saying too much

Hurt locker bored the pants off me....

We used Avatar just now to test out the new 40" HDTV we've got..... stunning visuals. There's one bit of Avatar though that really hit home with me. As someone who's lost a fair amount of mobility, the sequence where Sully first gets into his Avatar and then just Runs......that..... worked.

The Avengers is ridiculously awesome, and surprisingly funny. I guess I should have expected that with Joss Whedon rewriting the script. I only wish Ed Norton had been the Hulk instead of Mark Ruffalo.

Avengers was good.

I watch Angels and Demons on Netflix the other night. ****ing TERRIBLE. I remember Tom Hanks used to make good films. Then again, for that amount of money I'd make a sequel to two headed shark attack (actually a better film than A&D).

Haven't watched it yet, but seeing Ruffalo on the trailer I thought exactly the same thing. Eric Bana would also be better.

I too thought Angels and Demons was ****ing terrible. Unfortunately MrsM loves it. We went to see it in the cinema and I'm sat there thinking the £8 it cost to watch this could have brought me a decent book or something. MrsM then insists on buying it on Blu-Ray as well so when she put it on for us to watch one evening about ten minutes into the film I dialled the home phone from my mobile in my pocket when she wasn't looking and then answer it. "Oh Hi Mum... Havn't heard from you for a while... how's Dad... Yeah..." etc etc as I wander off into the bedroom. keep the charade up for a while and then go and read the internet on my laptop instead of watching the film.

I could have turned it off. I didn't mind the Da Vinci code, but this I really thought sucked balls. Manly, hairy balls. I realised it was utter pish pretty early too, but I didn't turn it off.

I rarely get that with films. Normally I'm in a "i don't really care but maybe it will pick up - that was cracking" range. Rarely, I'm in "lets just go, I'd rather do nothing than watch this" mood.

I agree. Bana was a good Hulk. That said, Ruffalo was pretty good, and he did the motions of the Hulk (using the method used for the actors in Avatar), but still. :D

A few movies I've seen that were surprisingly good.

Sucker Punch- Amazing SFX and I like the idea of going crazy with the imagination the way Zack Snyder does in this film, and the women are so f**king beautiful :D. They're all pretty good in the movie, too.

4.3.2.1- Another movie with a group of girls at the center, and I liked it quite a bit.

Wassup Rockers- Reminded me of my youth in good and bad ways, so I instantly connected with it (except for looking like the Ramones  ). The one thing that bugged me is how often the movie shows boys walking around without shirts. I never notice things like this, but it happened a lot in this movie and it makes no sense to me. :? Just looked up the director of the movie. Apparently, he does this in every movie he makes. :?

I agree and it's a shame as the book is excellent - the movie deviates from it so much and suffers greatly from it.

The Raid (2011)

The new Ong Bak!

Simple enough plot - SWAT team sent into slum to rid run-down block of crime-lord and his cronies. Goes wrong when they are compromised and there's no back up. High on bodycount, great visuals and a terrific score. If you enjoy watching guys kicking the crap out of each other at high speed - this is for you!

Anyone else seen this yet?

Prometheus!

Bit long but really liked it. Don't want to give too much away but the only thing that frustrated me was that for the first 2/3rds of the film I was watching a quality sci-fi, but then it suddenly became very much an Alien se/prequel. Anyone else seen it yet?

Respectfully disagree. The movie from the same director and same actor is Merantau:

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1368116/

That was the new Ong Bak. Same scenario, poor village boy that came to town and helped the poor girl against the baddies

I want to watch the raid though, sounds nice. Will probably go to watch the Snow White one tonight, the girlie really likes Kristen Stewart

As an IMDB review says, it's good, but not great.

I mean Charlize is fantastic, but Stewart acted the same way as in Twilight... The same vacant expressions and empty looks. The storyline was a bit different, I mean it had the apple and dwarfs etc., but for example I counted 8 dwarfs in the beginning. And the dwarfs weren't really a big deal, didn't engage the film a lot, which was a shame as there were a few good actors involved and I would love to see more of them. Also, when the "prince" kissed her, nothing happened... And at the end, it just leaves a taste of wanting.

Don't want to say more on the story itself, I can only say that it was lacking something, had a spark but no flame. But the movie quality was good, nice CGI, nice cinematography. Reminded me a bit of LOTR for some reason.

Funnily enough I watched the other Snow White film with Julia Roberts recently and the dwarfs in that film were ten times better.

3 Films I've seen recently.

The Avengers: Life changing. Straight up to my top five films at the very least. My one and only complaint was that they could have added more of the Captain America I'mNotInMyOwnTime subplot but I guess thats what the deleted scenes are for.

American Pie Reunion: Was pretty good and a nice send off for the characters. Some of it was a bit predictable and it probably wasn't as filthy-funny as the other three, but it felt more mature and warm. I think it was an appropriate way to end the franchise. A good film not a great one.

Men in Black 3: I thought it was better than the first two. Theres more plot and chemistry and less gimmicky aliens. OK the bikes thing was a bit unbelievable but the rest of it was fantastic. It was pure enjoyment from start to finish.

however, there were many plot holes which i found myself confused about,

that said, i still enjoyed the movie!!

I watched Prometheus last night and it is one of the best films of the past 5 years, a very good Sci-fi film.

I am a massive Alien(s) fan but this movie is different, dealing with larger issues than who is going to be killed next, for that reason it may even be on a par with both Alien and Aliens but only time will tell.

A good sign is I can not wait to see it again and will buy it as soon as the BD is out!!

Those are the last 3 films I've seen at the cinema too.

Avengers - I agree with your summary and Joss Whedon has said there will be more of Cap's sideplots on the DVD and Blu-Ray. I thought it was a very well put together film. However, I love pretty much anything that Joss Whedon is related too.

American Pie Reunion - I thought it was better than 2 or 3 for sure. I found it absolutely hilarious tot he point of almost being in pain watching it - I was laughing that hard. I really thought it was both more mature and also exactly the same. I did think though, they probably should have used the Bowling for Soup song "Highschool never ends" in it.

MiB3 - Okay film, better than 2, not as good as the first. I enjoyed it but felt the K character motivations were a little off in some places. Very interesting film, and certainly was not an embarassment by any stretch of the imagination.

I was actually left a little bit disappointed by Noomi. Maybe it was a language barrier kind of thing for her but I had extremely high expectations after the Millennium trilogy.

Little bit late to the party but watched The Avengers a couple of days ago and I think my summary goes pretty much as follows: alfhbslgbsljnsdfkj! 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

I wasn't sure what I was going to think to be honest. I really enjoyed Iron Man (the only one of the marvel films I'd seen before then) but still wasn't sure. But I loved it! Think the film was really well put together, the humour made it for me and the only thing that spoiled the experience was the group of people that sat at the front talking over all the bits that weren't action packed. Really enjoyed it and has made me start watching the other marvel films that are out.

I just watched it today in 3D!

I really liked it, although I found it a bit slow at times. But quite funny and really looking forward to a sequel. I pray for one! The 3D version is breathtaking at points, really advise it for people who haven't watched it, you still have time.

I also watched "we bought a zoo" and didn't really like it. Nice (and real) story, but dragged on too long feeling sad about his wife for a feel-good movie.

Finally, 21 Jump Street. I loved the series when I was growing up, but this had nothing to do with it. They actually make it clear in the movie! Itself the film is quite funny, the duo is actually so mismatched that it almost made sense. Really enjoyed that one

Ysmalari wrote:Drive - starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan

This appears to be a proper marmite film with many reviews I've seen that didn't get all the hype, I on the other hand really enjoyed it. There's more than a hint of an art-house movie in that it has extremely minimalist dialogue from the lead (all of Goslings lines could probably fit on one side of A4!) and is quite stylised with an excellent pseudo-80s soundtrack.

Despite how it was promoted when it first came out this is not a 'car movie' like the Gone in 60 seconds and Fast & Furious crowd, the car in this is more of a device to move the plot along. It also suprisingly flips a switch about halfway through, post-heist, and becomes really quite violent; some people have said that they thought it went over the top, but I thought it was an interesting way of showing the different sides to the lead character which hadn't been expected up to that point.

Gosling, I think, is excellent considering the limited dialogue he has to use to create his character which comes across as relatively complex; Mulligan is also good but a little limited by her character which is a bit two-dimensional.

An interesting and different movie and one I'd recommend.

9/10
I agree completely. Watched it last night and loved it.

I know, it takes you by surprise, the two don't seem a fit. And some parts are silly. But they really do work together and it is also so true about some of the youth today and how we all see them, even after only a few years down the line. Great fun all in all

I'm going against the grain here and not commenting on The Avengers.

Gnomeo and Juliet:

My 3 year old picked it out on Netflix, watched about 5 mins during breakfast, then happened to see it in Sainsbury's for £3 and now watched it 3 times today! For kids, its obviously a great little animation, nice and colourful and really good use on Elton in the soundtrack. For adults, there's a few good laughs in it that kids won't get and a stellar cast for voice talent, which any fan of British TV and cinema will recognise and even a cameo from Hulk Hogan to keep our American friends happy! I really enjoyed it all 3 times! And if you know the Shakespeare play it adds to the comedy. Even it you dont have kids, I'd say its worth a watch for some harmless fun for a hour and half and definitely the best kids film I've seen in a long time.

I only found out at the last minute that Whedon was involved in Avengers and missed it on the cinema.. meh.

I've been learning brazilian portuguese so have been trying a few brasilian movies. Of the 12 or so I've watched (most were either pure misery/violence or very pervy like 'Love, strange love') but I found a gem in 'O homem que copiava' - 'The man who copies'. Excellent story, characters and plot and very hard not to come away from the movie smiling.

There seems to be a trend towards making better tv shows (the borgias, game of thrones, dexter etc) while movies have been a bit stale for the most part lately imho.
