Just watched Avengers...

I'm not sure about my previous assertions between Scarlet and Colbie.

I was discussing the Jeremy Renner vs Hemsworth debate last night with my mate's missus. I don't fancy him, but Jeremy Renner is a very handsome fellow. I'd love to look like him.

Anyway, Avengers better at home than the cinema (though I really don't like the cinema).

In the cinema:
Dredd 3D - much more like it - although I enjoyed Judge Dredd it wasn't anything like the comics

DVD:
The Devil's Double - wonderful - really enjoyed it - highly recommend it

Blu-Ray
Lord of the Rings trilogy - stunning quality
Avengers Assemble - enough said - enjoyed it as much if not more than at the cinema - and saw both 2D and 3D versions in cinema

Watched Heat last night. De Niro and Pacino are a joy to watch. I know the film is 17 years old now, but it's still more than worthy of a watch.

Washington does a great job but overall the film lacks imagination. It's an action film to watch at home on a Friday night after a long week rather than a film to go out to the cinema and have the big movie evening out. 5/10
I agree and I can't believe it has a 6.8 on the IMDB. It was an ok movie, nothing special. Couple of good names in the lead, but that's about it...
I've seen that in cinema few months ago and I wasn't disappointed, but it wasn't anything special either. 6.8 seems to be ok rating.

Watched two Michael Caine movies recently. The Ipcress File, and Sleuth. Would recommend both!

Off to see Killing Them Softly this week - looks great on the trailer.

I'm not much of a movie buff, but I'm quite interested in seeing Looper when it comes out. From the previews, it appears.. thought provoking.

Plus I'm a bit of a sucker for Bruce Willis ;)

Won't be able to see it until at least Tuesday/Wednesday next week so if anybody's willing to suggest (or condemn) it, please do!

The hunger games.

If you've read the book it slavishly follows the book.

Overall it's well put together and the actors have done there work well. Visually it's pretty stunning in places. Some nice effects and so on. Unsurprisingly the story is Teen/young adult grade stuff but passes the time while I've been off sick. 7/10

Regular or Extended editions? I have the extended edition DVDs and found them to be not much longer but added a lot of pleasant back story, unnecessary but pleasant scenes and depth to the films. Granted, it makes the trilogy like 10 hours long (not inc credits) but improves nonetheless.

Anyway, I finished watching my Avengers Box set.

Avengers - Brilliant film. Well written, well cast, great action, good plot.

Iron Man - Great film.

Iron Man 2 - Enjoyed it more this time. I do wonder if it is confirmation bias type thing since I paid for a box set and really liked Avengers. I only thought it was "okay" at cinema. But I do prefer watching in my own house to cinema tbh.

Hulk - Holy jesus this was awful. Terrible film. I heard Eric Bana's one was worse of the modern Hulk films, but this really sucked.

Cap America - Better this time (not cinema).

Thor - Brilliant. Probably the best of the Avengers' films other than the Avengers itself. Perfect mix of comedy, plot, mythology, effects, story, character development plus Chris Hemsworth punching stuff really hard. Thought this was good first time, even better now I see it again.

Can't speak for the quality of the BluRay, but I've also got all the extended DVD's. There's about 3.5 hrs extra footage all in all to the cinematic versions, try watching them all back to back, then you'll notice (It's nearer 12 hours all together)! The extended bits like you said it didn't add to the film, but if you've read and know the books, it does add little nuggets of story which you do miss but at the same time aren't needed to move the story along.

I'd be interested to know what features are available on the BluRay version, if there are any knew docs or interviews? The features on the extended DVD's really made the whole film experience complete and gave a massive insight to pre, actual and post production. And imo is the benchmark for features on any other film and is not going to be beaten for a long time, Peter Jackson looks at the DVD audience as separate and different to the cinema audience and specifically works on and makes his DVD/BluRay different, unlike most directors who after making a film, can't really be bothered and leave the DVD/BluRay production to someone else.

I was going to argue that the extended editions do add to the films, but actually only two scenes I can think of really do.
Death of Saruman - as a secondary bad guy, seemed odd not to include this. I get why they got rid of the Scouring of the Shire. But include his death ffs! This bothered me in the films first time.
Scene with Boromir and Faramir in Osgilliath set right before Boromir goes to Elrond's council. Important to flesh out the Boromir character here. His treatment makes him look like a total dick, who just craves the power to save his land by any means. I get that, essentially this is what he is but the secondary issue of how he was around his family, showing he didn't enfore Denethor's mal-treatment of Faramir etc seemed like a borderline essential inclusion to me.

Some other inclusions are good, but as you say far from essential.

Some are just taking up time and not really needed or useful for back story.

I'm actually only getting around to reading LotR just now, I'm about 300 pages (of 409 according to my e-Reader) into the first volume. I'm glad they cut a lot of the crap out (like the 17 or so years between Bilbo's party and Frodo leaving the Shire) and tom freakin' bombadil. More I read of the book, more I think they could have gotten away with a lot more.

As far as I knew, I thought the Blu-ray extras were the same as the DVD extras (The edition I have is 4 disks per movie - 2 for movie and 2 for extras). That said, I find it very odd that the films are still split onto two blu-rays. I'd have thought they could get each film onto one blu-ray...

I fully forgot that wasn't included in the original theatrical release! So yes, that should have been in there to close out the Saruman and Worm Tongue's characters.

Hope you're enjoying the books, there is a lot of stuff mentioned that'll make no sense unless you read through the appendices, The Silmarillion and possibly Unfinished Tales as well to get a real feel for the history of the world Tolkien created. I've been a Tolkien fan since I first read the Hobbit when I was 8 and I am a bit of a nerd about any thing Tolkien related. Which is one reason why I know Peter Jackson did an amazing job with the films, if most Tolkien fans are ok with the changes he made and repect the films as much as the books, then they must be good!

The spacecraft of the future will have as a bare minimum touchscreen control panels. Anything made pre 90's and the ships are all controled by massive panels of lucite buttons and a Thrustmaster joystick brought from Maplins. :-)

I'm watching Alien right now, and Sigourney Weaver is wearing Chuck Taylors so you never know.

Could you imagine interstellar travel being powered by Apple OS? You'd come back to Earth a few years later and your ship would blow up when you tried to install the new landing app. Unless you used Jeff Goldblum's macbook from Independence Day, that can't run OSX, but can hack into alien spacecraft.

Got my Prometheus blu-ray today, lost of controversy about the film but I like it. There are a lot of extra's (including an alternate beginning and ending) and the documentary weighs in at three hours, so value for money is there. Ridley Scott has done a decent commentary, if people forget that it isn't a direct Alien prequel and see it as the first in a three step process (there will be three films in the series) some of the plot holes can be forgiven. Picture quality is solid and the 7.1 soundtrack is class.

Maybe not a movie but I also got Sons of Anarchy Season 4 on blu today, an awesome series and well worth a look if you have not encountered the Sons before. Picture and sound quality are reference quality on a fantastic show.

I was very disappointed by Taken 2.

The first one had a tight plot line, a lot of intensity and it didn't stretch the boundaries of the plausible (beyond the obvious like Neeson's character singlehandedly beating all the bad guys), and it also seemed quite clever. It really held my attention.

This one was just too run-of-the-mill entertaining action film for me. The plot was wishy washy and too much time was spent on character development rather than the storyline.

Just seen The Avengers on DVD... it was bloody awful. one of those movies that needs to be in the Cinema to be worth it's money. the gags aren't as funny the second time round, and Downey Jr. just overpowers Capt. America, which makes it implausible that he's the leader.

I remember thinking that i didn't pay too much attention to plot and character development when i saw it in the cinema, and now i've looked at it with a more critical mindset, i'm quite disappointed. Looks like The Dark Knight Rises could have a chance to redeem itself...

just watched Snow white and the huntsman

it promised to be a good movie when watching the first quarter, then it descended into anarchy
no real story line, acting is not the best

the huntsman was the best acting by far, Charlize thearon was good in most parts, but some bits were a bit bad.

now to the piece de resistance, snow white, played by Kristen Stewart. A lot is made about her acting ability, and i don't want to jump on the bandwagon, but she can't act her way out of a paper bag. She is so bad, i felt embarrassed watching her. The script, in her defense is woeful in parts, but her performance is bad.

its been given 6.3 on imdb, no doubt by people who are clinically insane, i wouldn't give it more then 4.5

its visual, a fantastic film, great scenery which screams Lord of the Rings, but its a shame the film is bad, as it had good potential

Prometheus.

I borrowed the Blu-Ray off a friend and watched it yesterday. I liked it a lot with one caveat that seems to be quite common. Just ignore the fact that its supposed to tie in with the Alien series of films. As a standalone SciFi film its good. Yes theres some plot hole and some poor acting but it's still worth watching.

I also watched Mark Kermodes revisit of it here Link-O-Matic

It seems like this film is a bit of a Marmite job.

American History X.

One of the most powerful, moving, hard hitting bits of cinema I have ever seen. It's written supremely well, character development is brilliant and the over lying concept of working to make sure life for you gets better is the strongest one going. Ed Norton and Avery Brooks carry the film, mostly Norton, and both are brilliant at what they do. The film never gets old for me. Everytime I find it just as hard hitting as the times before.

I got the James Bond box set, so I'll probably be giving my views of the series over a while. I am a huge Bond fan, but always been partial to Connery, Dalton and Craig, with a mention to Goldeneye as onw of the other fine entries in a relatively poor Brosnan tenure.

I got the bond box set, up to and including Quantum of Solace, a couple of years ago as an anniversary present (sometimes my wife is awesome!). We could probably have an entire thread for James Bond discussions!

Regarding Brosnan though, imo he was the best actual Bond, although films did get gradually worse, he thought he played the character the best! Plus Goldeneye is my favourite film of them all.

Oddly, although I've not seen Skyfall yet, I'm not a bug fan of the Craig films. Don't get me wrong, they're good films in their own right, but they don't seem like Bond films to me as they've got rid if the cheese that the franchise has had since Gold Finger.

Hall Pass.

mildly amusing but not worth the time. The highlights are Nicky Whelan's pickle and when she gets her chebs out. And that's not enough to base a non-porn movie around. Waste of time, don't recommend watching the film.

Star Trek: TMP

Odd film. I don't dislike it as much as some, but I believe they tiddled away budget in all the wrong places.

Star Trek II: The wrath of Khan

Great film. There is something special about the fact the two main guys never meet. It also amps up the Kirk-McCoy-Spock group[ing that became bigger in later films and is one of the more pleasing elements of the series.

(Also got the Star Trek and Star Wars box sets, so expect more on them - 10 Star Treks and 6 Star Wars films)

Watched Fargo for the first time today. It has led me to believe that Frances McDormand should be cast in every dark comedy Hollywood puts out, because Fargo and Burn after Reading are both a lot of fun.

Also recently watched the Alien and Indiana Jones trilogies and Blade Runner. It's led me to believe that CGI is killing good films because the stories are glossed over in favour of some fancy 3d stuff.

One of those films I kept meaning to get around to watching. I liked it but damn I now need some crackers and wine to go with the cheese :) Released in 1992 it has dated horribly. More so than Lethal Weapon. Glad I watched it but it's nothing special.

I will admit the shame.

The shame of actually treating a friend to the cinema, as she was alone and wanted to go out on Saturday night. And we went to...

Gaaaaah, can't say it without even vomiting a bit in my mouth. The vampire series conclusion thing (it was not a movie for sure, can't list it as one). The one with all the teenage girls and a few guys in the cinema dragged by their other halves, gagging and looking sad.

Kill it with fire and then bury it deep, as I never ever want to watch something like this again.
