Just saw this on BBC. I'm a huge Top Gun fan. I hope we get to find out exactly what happened with the whole thing.





Anyway, I went to see Expendables 2 last night. It's a good fun action movie, though it is ridiculously self indulgent and manages to border on parody/spoof of the whole action movie genre at some points. However, if you go in not expecting Schindler's List but expecting some explosions then thouroughly enjoyable. And yes, I wore a vest and bandana for going to see it! (And some shorts, pants, socks and shoes too!)

I've been watching the Carlos the Jackal miniseries (which was released in one 5 hour go as a movie as well). It's absolutely stunning. It tells the story of Ilich Ramirez Sanchez's life from the early 1970s up until his capture. A lot of artistic license to fill in the gaps between terror attacks, but it flows in a believable way, and the lead plays the role very well indeed.

I watched The Cabin in the Woods last night and I liked it very much. You really can't say much about the film without giving away any spoilers but it was a real breath of fresh air in the horror genre, especially the last third or so was epic IMO
I really hope they do a sequel/prequel!

I keep meaning to see that. Meant to go to cinema but the time just went past too quick, and meant to buy the DVd and forgot. Might buy it later today.

Went to see the new Bourne film. I'm gonna say I don't regret seeing at the cinema cause it means I wont make the mistake of buying it on dvd. Was always going to have to see it and now I'll try to forget it!

Yeah, I wasn't very impressed.

Another little gem Netflix showed me - Troll Hunter

The best way to describe it is Blair Witch Project meets a monster B movie. I was never a fan of Blair Witch but always enjoy a good light hearted monster movie and this film really didn't disappoint.

It's a Norwegian film (subtitled in the version I saw) based around 3 college students making a film about a bear poacher who turns out to be something else altogether (I'll let you guess what ) who then takes them with him to show them what he does. The Norwegian landscape really adds to the movie and the effects seem really good considering the budget the movie seems to made with. All in all, a good way to waste 2 hours. After this and Outlander, I'm really enjoying Norwegian sc-fi/fantasy and looking for more.

Good stuff, I've heard it's good, and was going to watch it recently, but never got around to it. With a name like Cabin in the Woods, I was expecting some kind of slasher and/or possession film, sorta like a cross between Halloween and the Exorcist.

I've been on the lookout for good horror films, but a lot seem to be the same old guff repackaged time and again.

Also, anyone know any good dark comedies? Preferably independent films, as they seem to be more fun. I watched the film Skeletons a few years back, about two people who exorcise the skeletons in your closets (quite literally) and thought it was excellent, and have been trying to find the best ones of a similar style since, but not really found any.
I did watch Elfie Hopkins the other day, which was similarly odd, about a teen detective who discovers her new neighbours are cannibals. There's a hilarious scene where the Wednesday Addams alike Gwyneth Keyworth is waving hello to someone through a window with a disembodied hand.

Any of Peter Jacksons early films are worth a watch. If memory serves, wasn't there a big lawn mowering of zombies in brain dead, which at the time used the most fake blood in any movie to date?

Yeah that sounds like it was that film! If you can get past the early boredom it is possible one of the funniest things I've ever seen!

On a random note, I'm watching 500 days of Summer for about the 15th time. I absolutely love it. Maybe it's because lots of the things the male lead does, I've done at some point. The main character is really well written, and Chloe Moretz makes a great point:

Same here but this one definitely stands out. Just a warning, my gf did not like it all so it's maybe one of those films that divide opinions...

Washington does a great job but overall the film lacks imagination. It's an action film to watch at home on a Friday night after a long week rather than a film to go out to the cinema and have the big movie evening out. 5/10

I agree and I can't believe it has a 6.8 on the IMDB. It was an ok movie, nothing special. Couple of good names in the lead, but that's about it...

Actually, the wait of Bruce Wayne agreeing to become Batman again keeps you anxious.

Well, I think I'm going to take Monday off. My Avengers box set (Iron Man 1/2, Thor, Hulk(maybe?), Cap America and Avengers Assemble) is coming on Monday, as (hopefully) is the new PC I ordered. I have to be in for the PC, the box set is a bonus. A few pals are coming on Monday to watch Avengers Assemble, so I might watch a couple during the day as it is.

Plus, it increases my Blue Ray collection by 600%! The only blu-ray I own is The Dark Knight...


Anyway, looking forward to seeing Avengers Assemble again. I really enjoyed it in the cinema, and I tend to like films better in my own home than the cinema, so I have high hopes.

Watched Men In Black 3 yesterday and I think it's surprisingly the best Men In Black film yet! Josh Brolin does a good young K -act. Solid 8/10.

I agree. The story lacks in action compared to the previous ones I think, but focuses on more emotional stuff. Very good

I thought Josh Brolin was great. He had Tommy Lee Jones down brilliantly (a bit old to be playing 29 year old K though).
They tied it up nicely I thought, and shows how James Edwards was always destined for the MIB.
The films are perfectly pitched at Will Smith's acting range at the time. 1997's Smith is coming off the Fresh Prince, just done Bad Boys and is the supremely confident joker, and the character reflects that. By 2002 he's cooled off a bit with the arrogant streak, but still is a joker, and by 2011 he's an old man who has proven he can do the emotional backstory fairly well.

I also have it on blue ray too! (along with gladiator (2 for 1 deal ) and Lord of the Rings, extended on BlueRay (a must for LOTR fans!)

It may be the equivalent of the Matrix, in so much as it is the hyper-popular film of the recent times.

However, I actually own it on DVD as well. I just wanted to see it on Blu-ray and it was £5 in Tesco one night. The only bit that really looks nice enough to merit it was the huge explosion. Other than that, I just wanted to have a Blu-ray since I had bought a PS3.

completely off-topic I actually liked Matrix and watched it maybe 5 times (I mean - sit and watch movie completely). however, I noticed that when I see in announced on TV I have absolutely no reaction and don't watch it any more. At all. I don't know. Maybe 2nd and 3rd part kinda killed it for me. Very difficult to describe that kind of emotion. no emotion. just nothing.

But I try to watch Fifth Element every time it's shown. it works for me.

While a minority for those that saw all 3 Matrix films, I actually really liked the third film.


Speaking of films I'll watch whenever they are on:
Addam's Family and it's sequel. With Angelica Huston, Raul Julia, Doc Brown from BttF etc. They are REALLY funny. Brilliant, brilliant films.

I really liked matrix revolution as well, it got slated cause its mainly set in reality, but you're average punter was expecting it set more inside the matrix. But as a future machine vs man film (ignoring the past 2 films) its good.

I've got all 3 on DVD and sometimes watch the 2nd and 3rd one, but very rarely watch the 1st!

Expected a typical American buffed/big boobed teenager slasher DVD type flick. Perfect after a few beers on a Saturday night!

Nope. Sucked in straight away. Humorous, smart, deeper than expected, occult, monsters, gods, tech, .......

Kinda made sense when I looked it up and found it was Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's baby .......

Buffy, Lost, Angel, Serenity, Avengers etc arn't a bad resume

In Bruges, by Martin McDonagh is excellent.

Anything by McDonagh is very good actually.

If you ever get a chance of seeing 'The Pillowman' in your local theatre, do not miss it!

Film seems to be pretty obscure considering (I thought) it was a pretty big release. I mean Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes are both pretty big names, and Brendan Gleeson is also reasonably well known. Maybe it was smaller than I thought, but I'm always amazed that no one really seems to have seen it. Excellent films, very entertaining and the dialogue is written masterfully.

its just so well made, i enjoyed it thoroughly!

Avenger Assemble Blu-ray box set came. Busy tonight! Busy tomorrow. Busy Thursday! Not gonna get to see it until Friday at best. Really shouldn't have paid extra for early delivery given I knew this in advance.

And, since I was debating this in the lab earlier, I think Cobie Smulders is hotter than Scarlet Johansson in that film.
