Never Le Me Go

Bit disappointed by this actually. Thought it would be slightly darker. A bit dull. Once you understand the set up the plot doesn't have a great deal left to deliver. Left mrs Dolomite 'disturbed' for a night but left me totally indifferent.
I want to believe Kiera Knightley can act, but again, in this she was just dull. Carey Mulligan blows her offs screen despite not having any particularly dramatic scenes.

Best films ever? - Snatch.

Every actor is perfect in the film, (even Jason Statham!)
Great plot, loads of action and it's funny :)

Crank was like a 8 or 9 on the Spinal Tap volume scale, Crank 2 truly turns everything up to 11.

Saw "We bought a Zoo" the other day. Great movie. Really a feel-good movie.

Also saw "J. Edgar" with Leo DiCaprio. Pretty good but not as good as I thought.

I havent seen that film yet. I've kind of avoided it because I saw the trailer and I felt a bit too American. I'm worried it wont live up to the book which was cracking. I read it nonstop over a period of about 15 hours. It made me laugh I loved the way it was written and it even made me cry a little bit. Unusual for a book but it is a factual account. I also live pretty close to Dartmoor Wildlife Park the zoo from the book. :)

Well, maybe you are right. I haven't read the book so I couldn't tell.
I had no expectations at all.

If you haven't seen Troll Hunter, I would urge you to do so. It is a great, quirky, little film, and has been one of those nice little surprise films that I didn't expect much of when I went to go see it.

TinTin.... hilarious movie... the CGI animation is top notch and the choice for Serkis as Haddock is insanely good..... and the one cut sequence through the city is utterly insane. Also Simon Pegg & Nick Frost as Thompson & Thompson is great, it's hard to work out which is which

Finally got to see Inception the other day.... insanely clever movie for such a simple premise

Contagion - utter crap - good cast but it was so disjointed and slow it was dire.

Immortals - made 300 look like something Shakespeare had written.

On the plus side, Columbiana was good as was The Rite.

Watched the Hunger Games in the IMAX on Saturday. Have to say it didn't impress me much. Slow and not developing the characters too much. I have to mention that I haven't read the book, so I didn't know what to expect. It's a mix of Battle Royal meeting Running Man.

IMDB gives it 8/10, I'd say 5/10. Expected more, can't say much more without spoiling it for the people who haven't watched it

I went to see 'Act Of Valour' at the weekend there. Great camera work, good action, poor plot, horrible acting. I can appreciate the production team opting to use real life Navy Seals instead of actors but there is a reason actors get paid decent money to act. Because they can. That theory does not apply to ex wrestlers. Definitely a movie for the Call of Duty/Battlefield generation.

Did you not see the Rock in pretty much anything. He was amazing!

but most of all, MOST OF ALL, did you not see Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live:

(In all seriousness, I don't actually mind the Rock. And Stone Cold did about as much acting as was required from him - stand there, look tough as nails and be stupidly muscley.)

The Chaperone? I bought that as a gag for one of my pals. Never seen it though. He was good in Blade Trinity, though as with Stone Cold, his role there was to be a 6"5, 270lb walking pile of muscle who swore in truly comical ways.

They Live, I'll give you that. I love John Carpenter films and had forgot about that one. I actually like Southland Tales with The Rock, but that movie defines 'Marmite'.

The Girl Who Leap Through Time (2006 anime version).

Wow. That was almost as good as Howl's Moving Castle. Brilliant film. To give Netflix's software it's due, it rarely recommends me stuff I don't end up enjoying.

I watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Having already see the original version I was keen to see the new English language one. I do dislike subtitles but I loved the books so I watched the subtitled films and I enjoyed them despite the subtitles.

Back to the Daniel Craig version and not so impressive. It's well made and the acting is by and large good. It all looks pretty etc. but it's also a quite disjointed. I know films cannot just slavishly follow the book but. some scenes seemed to be in totally the wrong place and some of the scenes they substituted from the book were just plain wrong. It's very much a "based on" rather than a film from the book.

5/10 for a good effort but a miss.

The Matador (2005)
Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear

Assassin on the verge of a breakdown meets regular guy and they bond.

Suprisingly good, and the shock for me was Pierce Brosnan who I've never seen do anything of note, but he was great in this. He has some great lines - check out the quotes page on IMDB.

Anyone else seen it?

Drive - starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan

A movie stunt car driver and getaway driver at night, who is involved in a heist gone very wrong.

This appears to be a proper marmite film with many reviews I've seen that didn't get all the hype, I on the other hand really enjoyed it. There's more than a hint of an art-house movie in that it has extremely minimalist dialogue from the lead (all of Goslings lines could probably fit on one side of A4!) and is quite stylised with an excellent pseudo-80s soundtrack.

Despite how it was promoted when it first came out this is not a 'car movie' like the Gone in 60 seconds and Fast & Furious crowd, the car in this is more of a device to move the plot along. It also suprisingly flips a switch about halfway through, post-heist, and becomes really quite violent; some people have said that they thought it went over the top, but I thought it was an interesting way of showing the different sides to the lead character which hadn't been expected up to that point.

Gosling, I think, is excellent considering the limited dialogue he has to use to create his character which comes across as relatively complex; Mulligan is also good but a little limited by her character which is a bit two-dimensional.

An interesting and different movie and one I'd recommend.

9/10

The Hunger Games

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392170/

imdb rating 7.6 (WTF?!)

my rating, if i am being generous , 5.8, 6 to be really nice

Well what can i say, a lot of hype, a lot of people saying (review wise) its a great film!

Its basically (in my opinion) a kids version of Battle Royale (when i say kids version, i mean its still a little violent, but no way near as much as B R)

In my opinion, it isn't a great film (7.6 is an absolute Joke!), character development is poor, the lead girl sucks, you feel no empathy for any of the characters, i didn't fully understand what was going on. its over 2 hours long, and believe me, you notice!

without giving too much away, if you've seen Battle Royale, this movie will suck!, if you haven't, watch Hunger games, and then Battle Royale, the difference is mind boggling

Very well said Vikz22. I felt the same, a bad cross between Battle Royal and The running man.

Battle Royal 2 is not bad, I prefer it to the Hunger Games, but the first is better I think.

That being said though, the Hunger Games is from a book, it is not the Holywood adaptation of an Asian film. So it has to be judged as a separate film and not compared to the BR in my opinion. So not 7.6, but an average 5.5 is fair I guess. I wanted more character development much like yourself.

Anyone seen Avengers?

Insanely cool movie, well worth the hype. Whedon has taken the already established characters and managed to weave a great story out of a simple plot (Bad guy wants to rule the world). Hulk steals the show IMHO.

The Avengers is the only movie this year I'm that bothered about and it blew away my expectations. I've seen it twice and want to go again (even with the ludicrous cinema prices!). Easily in my top 5 movies ever now. Iron Man and Thor were my favourites in there.
