Photos & such

Since the photo competition threads have died and been locked, I can't find a good place to share some photos, so lets start a new thread for it. Not a competition, just a place to share.

I just got back from living a lifelong dream... a visit to the Ferrari museums in Maranello and Modena. I apologize for the shakey quality of the photos, but unfortunately, the very first hour of the very first day I was in Italy, Florence to be precise, I fell while walking along the River Arno and in doing so destroyed my trusty Canon SX60 camera so the pics are taken with my phone and with an old point & shoot that I had, by good fortune, thrown in the suitcase at the last minute.

You can see all that I have posted so far using these links:

The Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena

Ferrari is certainly not everybody's "cup of tea", but most any F1 fan, and certainly any racing fan, would enjoy seeing these museum if you ever get the chance.

Congratulations on making your dream come true.
I visited Marenello in 2009 and it looks, from your pics, to have improved the collection since then so Damn! I will have to go back.
A good portion of the Painless blood which courses through these veins is Italian so I hope you enjoyed Italy (and your travel insurance coughs up for a new camera)

As part of my 14 year old daughters design technology course at school their school trip is to visit the Ferrari factory AND the Ducati factory design depts.

They never did school trips like that in my day!

No such luck on the camera... to high a deductable.

I did indeed enjoy Italy... so long as I don't get a rash of tickets in a couple of weeks as seems to be the norm for people driving in Italy for the first time.

On a personal note, I love Italy and have been fortunate to have been there 3 other times, twice in the 90s and just a couple of years ago (Venice). Having all my graduate hours in Art History, and having taught Art for 26 years, Italy is about as good as it gets for me. I too have been accused of having Italian blood running through my veins... but have a definately French surname.
:)

Awesome stuff. Looks like a great trip. I've never been to Europe, but I really want to go to Italy and this will be a must do.

The cars at the Enzo museum look like plastic toys! I suppose these are just the real cars all my toys were based on, especially the 550, I remember loving my little die-cast model! By contrast, the cars at Maranello look much more 'real' but such crazy designs. Amazing.

The F310 at modena seems a bit weird. Not just because of the modern sponsors but also the nose looks... shorter.

Fantastic photos! Thanks for sharing! Did you go on the simulator?

I remember 2 school trips. One was to a gravel pit and the other to a maple syrup farm. Whoopee..

Went to meet some family yesterday at a country home café. Turned up to find that there was a small car meet going on. Only had my iPhone with me, but managed to get a few decent photos.

That is me in an MP4-12C... got a video of me being taken for a 5 minute drive, but I think I said a few naughty words in it so i'm checking with the mods before I post it.

EDIT - Here's the video... might not be suitable for headphone users.

The display in the new building in Modena featured "Movie" cars... and some TV cars such as the Magnum P.I. 308 GTS. The Maranello display was pretty serious and the Ferrari History was well served.

I didn't get to try the simulator...we had the unrealistic goal of visiting the two Ferrari museums, the Maserati factory (right across the street in Modena), and Lamborghini factory all in one day!!! It can't be done! Especially when staying west of Florence.

Maybe that is unrealistic but you need to up the ante and throw in a visit to the Alfa Romeo museum too!

Thanks, so did I. had I known and taken my proper camera, then there would have been a lot more photos of that beast.

again, some nice shots, Rob. too bad that Dodge did not have a Demon there. What an insane machine. I was just reading an article in Hot Rod magazine on it, it is staggering. Not a sports car by any means, but a sporty car beyond doubt. Quarter mile times verified at 9.65 seconds. There is no pretense of it being practical, but it will be available to be licensed, with AC and thoroughly road legal.

Hey Blake, seem to remember that you live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Are you in the path of the total eclipse in a few weeks? And will you be taking/sharing any photos?

Indeed, I am in the path... about 120 miles west of Lincoln, but definitely in a good place for it. A few miles off the optimum though. It is amazing how much interest this is generating. There are no hotel rooms to be found anywhere along the path, tours are booked, special viewing glasses available in every store or city office. We, as are many businesses, are shutting down for part of the day, so workers can see it. I'd like to be in the cellphone repair business if the warnings against using cellphone cameras are true! I have to see if I can find the right filter to protect the camera.

If I get some decent shots, I will be sure to share them.

Thanks, Rob, for the photos!!!

Getting slightly excited myself, and I'm not even there, lol

Went off to the local rally today. Probably didn't set myself up in the best position overall, but I was glad how this one came out..

Managed to find a nearly spotless field in rural Western Australia on the weekend. It reminded me too much of the generic Windows XP background to not get out and take a shot.
