It has been a long time for Cleveland as well. Given the year of incredible hype that the Cubs have enjoyed and the relative anonimity that Cleveland has had, I think it would be the classic "little guy" win.

These teams must be sucking up all the good sports energy from their cities. Would explain the Bears and Browns...

One of my pals is big into Chicago sports. So I guess I'm very marginally in favour of the Cubs.

Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA championship last season. There's no excuse for the Browns other than to give somebody for the rest of the AFC North teams to beat up on twice a year. As a Ravens fan it's not something I'm going to complain about.

I didn't think you were disrespecting the Cavs (and since I don't follow the NBA I wouldn't be bothered if you were) I was just pointing it out.

The only good thing the Browns have done since winning the NFL championship in the 50's was to disband and move to Baltimore.

There are no bigger underdogs in major American sports than the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. To have them both in the World Series is a dream come true for me. I haven't paid much attention to baseball since the 1970s, but I usually watch a game or two of the playoffs or World Series each year. This year I have watched both WS games so far and plan to watch more (though I am busy Friday evening). To have a series where I can root for both teams is amazing and all kinds of fun, and I have enjoyed the games so far more than any in decades.

Just for a person who doesn't know anything much about baseball, are there any teams from outside North American that actually play in the world series? I've just never understood why it's called the world series when the only teams I've ever heard of are American and Canadian.

It was originally the World's Series. Back in the day when newspapers used to organise grand prize events The New York World set it up. Then time and possibly brand recognition and the slight bastardisation of that brand led to the World Series. Though Wikipedia also points out that this is disputed. So take from that what you will. NFL calls their Superbowl a World Championship as it was originally the big blowoff between the champion teams from the two leagues they had in the USA. Not that you asked, I just always found the Superbowl one funny until I found that out.

I think also that the convention is simply now that "World Title/Championship" sounds like the top dog and if you called it "American Chamionship" or the like it sounds like it's a smaller deal altogether. Chances are, the teams that win the NFL or MLB are the best team of the moment in the world so it doesn't bother me. But yeah, I see you point to a degree.

This was certainly true when the championships were established, which is probably how they can continue to use those titles today.

I have only missed one of the five games so far, and have been enjoying this series greatly. Having two teams I like and can root for contending for the championship makes a world of difference. Like any championship, everything is amplified in importance and each pitch becomes more exciting.

I personally am rooting for the Indians because they were one of my favorite teams when I first starting really following baseball back in the mid-90's. The talent was just out of this world. A great amount of Hall of Fame talent (except the pitchers, but they were still good) like Albert Belle, Omar Vizquel, Manny Ramirez, Sandy Alomar, and Jim Thome. Losing two World Series in 3 years, and then not getting back to those heights until this season, means I have developed a soft spot for them over the years.

Plus, prior to LeBron James and Cavaliers winning the NBA title this year, Cleveland's major sports teams had won nothing since the Cleveland Browns won the NFL championship in 1964. Chicago's major sports teams have done well in that same period of time. Six titles in the 90's with Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the NBA, three Stanley Cups since 2010 with Patrick Kane and the Blackhawks, the Bears won the Super Bowl in 1985 with one of the greatest teams (and certainly the best defense) ever assembled, plus the White Sox won a World Series 11 years ago.

I would love it if Cleveland got another title this year.

Cubs had other curses other than the Billy Goat and the Bartman. There was the black cat from 1969, and the shot called by Babe Ruth in 1932.

The question now is will Cleveland finally find their racist logo to be a bad luck charm and change it.

The Cubs fans should have made up for that years ago. I hope he stays away, to be honest. He never deserved what they put him through. Cubs fans are one reason why I am not thrilled that the Cubs won the World Series. I felt the same way with the Red Sox fans and Bill Buckner. I don't care how much their team means to them, it's no excuse in the end. What I hated about Buckner being invited back to Fenway was that it seemed like he was being forgiven by the fans, when they should have been asking him for forgiveness.

Besides, Bartman had nothing to do with the the Cubs losing the NLCS. They still had plenty of chances to win the series, including the following game (in which they were leading before losing, which also had nothing to do with Bartman), and the Red Sox would not have been in the 1986 World Series if not for Bill Buckner.

Yeah I agree that Cubs fans owe Bartman big time but I think asking him to play a part in the opening day next year would go some way towards righting the wrong, not that I think he'd say yes anyway. That incident to me is one of the ugliest, if not the ugliest, things I have seen in a sporting arena and the way people inside and outside of the stadium, media and even the mayor acted is a cross the city deserves to carry for a long time yet. I understand there are still people who hold him responsible for the series loss in 2003.

One of the saddest and most deplorable things in sport is that scapegoating that goes on when people / teams lose. It's tragic when you read the stories of the likes of Bartman, Buckner, Norwood & Andreas Escobar. To watch Bartman sitting in that chair with tens of thousands of people around him and outside the stadium baying for his blood is sickening. It's a huge testament to him that he hasn't attempted to profit from the incident (though I think any right thinking person wouldn't begrudge him one single cent) and has apparently turned out to be a well adjusted member of the community who still supports the Cubs.

I have seen it all from my teen years in the '80s to now.

Chicago Sting - North American Soccer League Champions in '81 and '84. (League Folded).

Chicago Bears - Super Bowl XX winners in '86.

Chicago Bulls - 6 titles in the '90s.

Chicago Fire - '98 MLS Cup champions in their expansion year.

Chicago White Sox - 2005 World Series Champions after 88 years. (Last World Series won in 1917).

Chicago Rush - 2006 Arena Bowl Champions (Arena Football League - Team folded in 2014).

Chicago Blackhawks - 3 Stanley Cups (2010, 2013 and 2015).

And now the Cubs. The circle is complete. And then some.

I really enjoyed that World Series and was very happy for the Cubs when they won. Extra innings in game seven, you can't ask for more excitement than that!

The 108 years thing gets bandied about a lot. What really drove it home for me was this. The manager of the last Cubs team to win was player-manager Frank Chance. As in Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance. I read a poem about that double-play combination when I was a young kid in the 1960s and it was a poem about ancient baseball even then. That's the bit that made me pause and figure out how old my grandparents would have been in 1908, and how much the world has changed in the past 108 years.
