The official Marcus Ericsson support thread.

First Swede since Stefan Johansson on the starting grid.
Personally I hope he will do a good job in Caterham. He has the speed but he needs to be consistent. It's as good as any time to enter F1 this year with all the new regulations. It will be very exciting to see him battle Koba.

He seems a competent enough driver but there's nothing to mark him out as being anything special

Ah, so now we know what the "E" in Mr-E stands for. Are you still considered a fan-boy if you make posts and start threads about yourself? :)

Seriously though, since coverage of lower series is nonexistant here I've never seen the kid drive so I don't know what to expect but here's hoping we have a new hot-shoe on the grid.

Marcus Ericsson is an interesting driver. Having driven four seasons in GP2, his string of results may seem less than exciting, but having a closer look at what he actually did makes it a bit more intriguing.
He said everything went wrong for him in 2013, and it well and truly did, because he should've been competing for the championship. He scored zero points in the first nine races - down to a mix of driver errors and bad luck, mainly (those races included two poles). However, his 2013 season looks quite like my picture of the guy - he's fast. Really fast, even. His problem is that he's inconsistent at such a level I've got problems deciding what to really make of him.

Ericsson is one of those drivers who could really shine or be nowhere - and he could do both of those things in two consecutive days. There's a possibility he can really get it right at Caterham and consistently getting up to speed, and he seems to have bigger potential than Pic or van der Garde (but how is he compared to Kobayashi? Who knows?!). However, there's also a chance of him simply not coping and apart from getting a stand-out result won't be anywhere. I'm hoping for the former, but right now, it seems like time will have to tell.

I think his biggest problem in GP2 is the lack of driving during the race weekends.
Correct me if i am wrong but i think they only have 30 minutes of practice during the whole weekend.
His performances in previous categories are quite good i believe. With Formula BMW UK and Japanese F3 champion as the highlights.
And he has always been quick during tests in both GP2 and WSR when they have more time to play with.
So F1 should be better in that perspective with much more driving every weekend.
I know its the same for everybody but hey! im a swede and want him to do good :)

Well, good luck to him. He's going to be starting next to a WDC, so he'll need it

This is a driver support thread like any other driver has. Post your negative thoughts in the other threads about Caterham driver appointment.

I think you have to include the word "support" in the title though, e.g. the Kimi thread is "just" the official thread, not a support thread, so negative comments are permitted according to the mods.

You kidding? Are you expecting from the modes to start policing "negative thoughts" in this thread?

I just read on a Swedish site, the article about Ericsson and his hight and weight (and what he is supposedly to do about). And what now? If I just state it here I might be accused of the "negative thoughts" crime.

It's just silly. God forbids Ericsson makes a mistake in his first race and finishes dead last, for example. Not appropriate to be even posted not to speak of discussing on this "support" thread.

Breath.. Sit down. And listen.

Take a look at the other support threads. Mods have stated that they should be clean of any bashing. I should have said it was a support thread in the title and have since edited it.
Förstår du?

Anyway I wish Marcus well.

There are no other official "support" threads of other drivers as far as I can see. That the most posts in such official driver threads are type "support" is but natural due to the most of the posters being the fans of that driver. But any other post that is not in the breach of the forum's rules is just as well allowed even if it is not the "support" post. In my knowledge, there is no such thing as "only support posts" thread (apart from Schumacher's skiing accident thread). So congratulations for creating one!

What I am basically saying is that you cannot possibly have mods policing such things as "negative thoughts" posts or even "no support" posts for you in your Marcus Ericsson's "support" (read = fans) thread.

See, Aftonbladet.se just wrote the article "Ericsson, 69 kg - too fat for Formula 1". That would be not the subject of discussion of this "support" thread apparently: "negative thoughts" and "bashing" the driver.

Anyway, that said, the conventional wisdom is that it is best to leave such threads to the supporters and fans of that particular driver only as they appear to get easily disturbed due to the feeling that it is "their" thread. So be it.

Otherwise I am only but glad for Marcus. We here in Sweden got our driver to "heja på", finally. I hope one day in the future we hear "Du gamla du fria" from the podium, too.

Kobayashi will provide a great benchmark. If Ericsson can get close to him or even beat him then it could give him a ticket to better seat further up the grid. The problem faced by many drivers who start out at back-of-the-grid teams is that they have no one to battle against other than their team mate, and if their team mate isn't highly regarded then they have very limited opportunity to enhance their reputation.

I'm not too hopeful about Ericsson because his record in lower formulae isn't great, but then again nor was Kobayashi's and he came in in 2009 and was instantly on the pace. Let's not write him off yet!
