Greatest overtakes

Post by f1diablo »

I have seen so many great passes in f1, but this one for me was my favourite of all time

Kimi on Fisichella at Suzuka is my all time favourite, never cheered for much for an overtake except for Lewis on Glock.
Kimi/Lewis battle at Spa 2008 is also a great series of overtakes.

This is still one of my favourites, no braking there, just a man overtaking, specially considering the driver he was passing who is not known to surrender easily :]

That's pretty standard to be honest, lots and lots overtakes in 2012 and 2013 in the very same place. Alonso pulled identical one against Seb in 2012 and before that Seb ran him off the track.

The best overtake of Seb I can think of (without giving it too much thought, though :D ) is against Alonso in Bahrain 2013, T3 at the start.

Whilst that overtake does look great with the gap closing like that I can't help but cringe at how easily he could have taken them both out of the race, a moment where both drivers need to be very aware of what's going on.

Which they were, hence a great overtake and not a crash :D .

Considering no DRS and the teams differences the overtakes of Sato on Alonso and Kimi in Canada '07 was pure magic and balls, in equal doses:

I found the one on Alonso: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZroTtC-FFcE

Aguri 4 points over the season
Ferrari 204 points over the season
Macca 203 points (well, almost!) over the season (218 if not penalised in Hungary)

There's so many its impossible to choose one.

I always remember the epic failed overtake from Christian Fittipaldi on Pierluigi Martini at Monza 1993.

The best overtake I have seen in recent times is Grosjean on Massa in Hungary.

Back in the day when the Ferrari cars actually had traction :D Amazing move, very Alonso-esque - reading the situation in a split-second and pulling amazing move.

You can be brilliant at overtaking.

You can't overtake brilliantly.

The point is to get past.

There are exceptions, like Mansell 1990 or Hakkinen 2000.

You can't overtake around the outside.

Unless you are Villeneuve in Portugal on a driver who knows what he's doing like MSC.

Going outside to get the inside line is not outside, because you take a shorter route.

My favourite overtake that is not an obvious one, is Schumacher on Hakkinen at Monza 1998. It is a slingshot. It is a form of overtake that deserves to be respected because it is good.

Very on the limit both overtakes (a bit dangerous / wreckless)

It's not reckless (or reckless, whatever that is at home), it's the same part of the track MSC did a double pass in 2011. It lends itself to that, as another car can really hold another car up in that corner - only 1 line.

In the Hungary one he put the car dangerously close to Hamilton he could've caused a collision. The second one he pushed Kovalainen wide

This. I still consider this to be one of my best ever moments watching F1.

I also always liked Piquets overtake on Senna, also mentioned above.

It's F1 cars get dangerously close, nothing wrong with either move and both were good passes!

Is this kind of the point of racing? Do you remember Mansell and Senna in Spain almost interlocking. Great overtake.

It's great because there's only inches between cars, and no collision. Every daring overtaking could have end up with collision if someone make mistake. I'm not sure what is great overtaking to you.

The one in canada is considered fair but could be a bit cleaner (no need to push someone wide if you have so much space)
The one in Hungary is pretty much dangerous because you are turning in/blocking the car on the inside. Massa was lucky Hamilton didnt run wide or brake too late, because that was asking for an obvious collision.
Here's Massa and Alonso on reversed roles. What happened? Obviously both collided and Massa pushed Alonso off track.

The Piquet on Senna one is possibly my favourite one of all time. I just love the amazing car control when he completes the overtake - four wheel drift, just incredible! Must have taken big cojones...

Yep, this is only one example of so many. You can definitely overtake around the outside, on some specific corners of course.
And when it rains you can do it aswell, here's alonso overtaking MS around the outside at Hungary
