The Official Fernando Alonso thread

Hi all, just a place to discuss that greatest grand prix driver of all time (open to debate, but my fingers are in my ears, my eyes are shut and I'm making loud noises so I can't hear you).

2012: Holding my breathe a lot at the moment. Hopefully as testing winds up and the season starts it will turn in to relief, instead of panic.

we all know that Fernando is probably the one person to bring Ferrari to the top again

Been a Fernando fan for a long time now. Really hope he wins a WDC in a Ferrari.

There's talk that the teams could be bunched up very close this year, closer than last year anyway. I hope its true. Ferrari doesn't look as if its gonna be that good but if the gaps between teams are small maybe there's hope yet for Alonso talking his 3rd WDC. I was heartbroken when he didn't win it in 2010. He is too good to just be double world champion.

Prost is my favorite among drivers whom I've never seen live. I find many similarities between him and Alonso and I'd like Alonso to reach 4 championships like him. :)

I have only recently become an Alonso 'fan', although I've always had respect for him as a driver, even if he has been involved in a lot of controversy in his career.

He is definitely better than a mere double champion and deserves to win the title again. After it became apparent in Abu Dhabi in 2010 that Webber was out of the frame for the title, I was rooting heavily for Alonso, but we all know how that turned out.

The Ferrari doesn't look stellar this year but hopefully Alonso, yet again, can make the difference.

As Centauri says, Alonso is a driver who can make a difference. What he did in 2008-9 with the slow Renault was outstanding, just as were his perfromances for Ferrari in 2010-2011. Driver efforts are always under-rated when they are in off-pace cars; that is the real test of driver quality. As Lauda wrote in the latest F1 Racing magazine (March 2012), when the car is working well, the driver and team have it so much easier, they build on each other's momentum. All media and fan attention highlights the winners: they appear in bright technicolor, the rest are in black-and-white, like Rosberg and Kovalainen, imo the past few years.

It will never happen with Alonso, Kimi was the only driver capable of doing so after schumi! The only other driver capable of doing so on the grid would probably be Vettel

Wow, how sad are you. After these gems in another thread:

you decide to come into the Fernando Alonso thread just to troll? It's a pity that this forum upgrade didn't bring along the option to ignore users.

It is a sad day when people only bash other people. :-(( You can at least respect the person for what he achieved. Last time I checked F1 was not a personality contest. I do not favour all the drivers and have favourites and Alonso just happen to be one of them. I hope he and Ferrari can pull something out of the hat this year, but I will still support them regardless.

I think he is without a doubt the fastest driver on the grid. He just gets struck with bad luck/bad cars :frown: Still though, he did still manage to get a win last year! :)

How is he the fastest driver on the grid if his ROOKIE team mate beat him in 2007 with the same car 8O :?:

Lewis Hamilton is def. better now than he was in 2007 and Button beat Lewis, therefore we def know that we have a minimum of 2 drivers faster than Alonso, not to mention Kimi, Vettel, Webber, Schumacher, Roseberg, Kobayashi, are ALL FASTER than him.

Let's not get carried away! The sad thing is your blind love for a driver who hasn't proved himself in F1 machinery for over 2 years! Not to mention he got beaten by Massa who Alonso is 1 season away from putting into retirement!

Good luck to Fernando this year, it doesn't sound like the car is up to it but his motivation can never be questioned! In my opinion he is the most complete driver on the grid, not the fastest as he admits to but with a capable car for the whole season he is easily a match for the likes of Vettel, Button and Hamilton.

He did get beat by massa, because the team was fully behind massa. As we all already know that! Fernando is complete if being complete is being an arrogant

very wrong, alonso obtained those 2 WDC by LUCK. Not to mention that we can't compare WDC's because it's not fair to compare drivers unless they have the same machinery! Scumi is def. not the best driver on the grid I think we can angry on that. There is no debate to be had, Alonso is the most over rated driver of the history of formula 1.

Thehabsonice, there is a fine line between harshly attacking a driver you dislike and openly trolling. Please make sure that you stay on the correct side of that line so that we don't have to intervene.

I'd like to take the opportunity to remind forumers that, regarding the issue above, we are particularly strict with comments posted in official threads.

Alonso is certainly not overrated. I used to dislike Alonso as he used to give my preferred driver a hard time. But currently I have to admit that he does have the capability to produce magic in a less than magic car. I think it's great having so many different characters of great drivers sharing the same piece of tarmac. I still hope Kimi puts a couple past him though

Well! I thought I better join this thread seeing as it is the "Official" Fernando Alonso thread :]

It was Alonso who brought the excitement back to F1 when a certain Mr Schumacher was winning day in, day out, F1 was incredibly boring and worse still, it was predictably boring, that is until, the very nice Sn Alonso weaved his voodoo 8O

Alonso to Mclaren I think we are all agreed was a huge mistake for Fernando and infighting cost him his 3rd WDC, to finish equal on points with the whole Mclaren operation seemingly against him was quite a spectacular feat in itself and I do wonder how others drivers would have coped given the same environmental circumstances.

Alonso showed he could face the cruel winds that were rallied against him, he was then the existing WDC but was treated unfairly imho but it is time to move on from that and concentrate on what this year can bring. A third WDC? fingers crossed, personally I think if Vettell wins again and convincingly so, it will be a return to the schuey era and for that reason I will get behind anyone but SV, hopefully it will be Alonso taking the fight to Red Bull, but I have no qualms about supporting Button or Hamilton if they are the ones to take away the Red Bull dominance.

Back on topic!! Alonso is just brill.

Good drive to get fifth from 12th after a poor qualifying.
Fernando is really earning his money, but he must be worried as the team seem to have been getting gradually worse ever since he joined them.

Massa shows how bad the car is, which also shows how good Fernando is.

I think that Massa made a mistake with the setup, I cannot believe that all the difference between him and Alonso is just down to driving skills.

But yes, Alonso did great yesterday. And to quote Brundle, he showed that "He could drive a wheelie bin with one wheel missing and still be fast. He just never gives up, that boy" - nice comment, btw!

Where are the Alonso fans? He's leading the WDC standings, gets pole and not one post?
I'm not an Alonso fan but I am impressed by the man and what he's achieved. He needs only another four successive points finishes to equal Schumacher's record of 24, and he's been on the podium for 13 of those.
