So it looks like Toto is gonna let Hamilton wither on the vine for a month, then pull the trigger on Russell.

I hope someone else picks up Hambone so we can see what kind of a driver he really is.
I'd also like to see what sort of driver Hamilton really is. In his 13-14 years or whatever in F1, I've simply not seen enough evidence.

What competition has he even had recently? In 2017 and 2018 Vettel was producing miracles to make it look as if Ferrari could challenge for the titles and Hamilton looked godlike due to having a massive car advantage, yet people try to paint the narrative that the performance of the cars was actually close in those years.

Haven't we had enough of Hamilton by now though? Why see what sort of driver he really is when the sport could be truly invigorated purely through his retirement.
No doubt Hamilton is a great driver. Everyone on the grid is. How many titles and wins would he have if he were in a Renault the last few years? Would he have won the driver championship in a Ferrari in 2020? I say lets put him in something else and see where he slots in. If he can get in an Ashton Martin next year and win the drivers championship, then he is the greatest of all time. If not it's the car.

Need proof. Russell who is always at the back of the field in a Williams was .026 off poll on his teammate who has beaten Hammy for poll a few times and he did it after just a few practices. Hell he didn't even know what the switches did. Then he smoked Bottas, got screwed by his team twice and still kept it together. I'm saying it's 90% the car. But no doubt Hamilton can drive. It's just in that car, so can everyone else.
I'm just wondering how long have you been watching F1?

Maybe the new owners got money to blow. Maybe they step it up. I think it would be great if they put Lewis in it and they made huge progress with the car. Odds of that happening are slim to none but you never know.
You're going to be so disappointed when Hamilton signs his new contract with Mercedes. :)

The more time that goes by and he doesn't sign the odds get worse he doesn't.

I am starting to think he will not be with Merc next year pretty much no matter what.

I hope someone else picks him up. I want to see his talent in a lesser car. Lets face it. Watching him win all the time is no fun for anyone.

Now watching him battle it out with people in 3rd 4th or 5th when he is in a lesser car but with more talent, that would be exciting.

In 2006 he was still in GP2, and from 2014 on he has never had anything but the 1st or 2nd best car.

I would say the seasons in which Hamilton had the 3rd or lower car were:

2009
Maybe 2010
2013

And that's it.

I don't think so. I think Lotus had the clear second-best car, and the superior driving of Alonso, Hamilton, and Rosberg made it look different than it was.

Consider this. Throughout their time at Ferrari -- both as teammates in 2007 and 2008, and then being compared to Alonso and Vettel -- Raikkonen and Massa were firmly established as very close to one another on pace. And yet, despite missing the final two races with back surgery, Kimi outscored Massa by 183-112 in 2013. The only way I can see that wide a margin is by the Lotus being a significantly better car.

I have the McLaren down as 3rd best in 2010 and the Merc down as 3rd or 4th in 2013.

The Lotus was definitely the better car in 2013. Didn't Alan Permaine recently say Alonso would have fought for the championship in it?

Well, lesser by some very lofty standards. Hamilton has never spent a season in a car incapable of winning a race on merit -- something that precious few other WDCs can say.

Also worth noting that when we did see him in slightly weaker cars pre 2014 he was very good but I wouldn't say operating at GOAT level.

That should be long enough for you to realise that no driver wins the title if he hasn't got the best or near best car so what you're asking of Hamilton or any other driver in the history of the sport is not possible.

Why Hamilton happens to find himself in the best car, well that's something you seem unable to work out for yourself.

It seems you just want Hamilton to be belittled, whether it be with Hamilton having to accept far less money or having to drive an inferior car.

That's a good shout.

I would say it was the Lotus car that lead us to believe that the old Kimi pre-2007 was back only for him to then get royally beat by both Alonso and Vettel.

The stats bear that out. Hamilton has won at least one race every season. There are only two seasons of those where his teammate has failed to win a race. 2009 where Heikki never really came close to winning one, and 2018 where Bottas lost at least three wins due to misfortune/team orders.

Alonso would certainly have gotten more out of that car than Kimi or Grosjean did but I think the title is a bit of a stretch. Vettel had the fastest car and his teammate was basically a dud by that point. He would have mopped up quite comfortably in the races where Red Bull were faster.

I’d agree though, definitely better than that season’s Merc overall. Hard to say where it was relative to Ferrari; Nando was an absolute monster for that team. There was just too much variation between him and Massa to really say.

I agree the title in 2013 in a Lotus is a long shot. I reckon Alonso prevents the 13 race winning run though.

The Ferrari and Merc that year are hard to compare. Ferrari started out second best but quickly faded and were definitely 4th best by seasons end. The Merc started slower but get better quickly.

looking for progress on the contract negotiations, plenty of articles out there that toto/ineos/merc (tim) rejected lewis' first offer. it was a big ask from lewis, big, very big. then he rejected tim's offer and there is an end of february date to get it done

i would guess it is pretty obvious. they all want to stay together at least one more year. to get 8 and make history. articles i have found are all wondering who at tim lewis is negotiating with ? anyone heard who ham is in contact with for negotiations at tim ?

It might be a typo for Jim Ratcliffe, the CEO of Ineos.

The recent discussion had drifted off topic, to be a more specific topic comparing Hamilton to Schumacher and their teammates / contemparies - which warrants its own thread, to keep this one as a more general Hamilton specific news thread.

The new topic can be found here:

Conceited much?

While express is trash tabloid reporting so I don't believe them much if at all - however, if he said that then just....wow!

He did say it but it was a few months ago so it's old news being dragged up by the Express who seem to be having a field day at the expense of Hamilton.

I guess it's alright to barrack Hamilton and in particular Bottas with criticism but they're not allowed to respond, we can only guess at what was being said but obviously harsh criticism of Bottas because of the beatings he's taking from Hamilton. Hamilton's response is do you realise who he's up against do you think I'm just chopped liver but worded in a different way from which further attack on Hamilton can be made by those in particular who might not rate Hamilton that highly.

A really curious thing.

In my impatience for F1 to get underway, I've been watching a lot of highlights of races from recent years...

... and this chap called Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton seems to win an awful lot. It really takes away the suspense of watching the highlights where perhaps a poor memory wonders "who won this race again?"..

... Oh right yes, Mr. Hamilton.

So what I've concluded through this process is that Hamilton wins a lot of races.

A true revelation.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for linking! It backs up a lot of what I've been saying about Hamilton's insecurity at McLaren although I'm surprised he's never used a sports psychologist. I thought of all the current drivers on the grid, he would benefit the most from that, particularly in his early career.

So, in short - he has demonstrated his talent in a lesser car.

Like Vettel did in Monza 2008?

I'm not sure what you are relating this to exactly but you do know that Vettel's teammate qualified 4th for that race.

He qualified fourth, but he was -0.890s behind Vettel. If Vettel had done what Bourdais did, no one would have considered it an impressive drive that proved his ability. Qualifying fourth in a midfield car isn't (or wasn't, in that era) some huge feat. Qualifying on pole and winning is.

Nothing annoys me more (in an F1 context) than people trying to devalue Vettel's Monza win. It's absurdly disingenuous.

And I'm one of Vettel's harshest critics.

First of all you don't know the fuel loads, secondly it's all about the myth of a car that qualifies 1st and 4th is somehow a midfield car that's the only issue.

I highly doubt that the 9 tenths gap between Vettel and Bourdais
had much to do with fuel loads if anything at all, that’s just desperate reaching.

Anyway, the fastest car that weekend was McLaren, but Kovalainen simply couldn’t keep up with Vettel while Hamilton had his issues in qualifying (that was partially his own fault).

It was a midfield car. Racing Point qualified 1st and 3rd in Turkey last year; are you saying that wasn't a midfield car?

I'm not Vettel's biggest supporter by any stretch of the imagination, but the 2008 Toro Rosso was a weaker car than anything Hamilton ever took a win in. Does that somehow make Vettel a better driver? Heck no. Maybe Hamilton could have won in that car - it's even pretty likely he could have. But the closest he's come to a midfield car in his career was the first half of 2009, and he didn't win until that car was dramatically improved to a level beyond the 2008 Toro Rosso.
