Apparently, negotiations over a new contract have stalled until Mercedes get him a round table for discussions to take place around!
Yeah, I noticed Marca currently has that as their top news on their site, literally saying "Daimler blocks Hamilton contract renewal" and "Hamilton has no contract with Mercedes as from tomorrow".
I think it's about time this thread was put to bed.
So I'll just say "Good Knight"
In the sea there are three kinds of things: those at the bottom, lagan; those which float, flotsam; those which the sea throws up on the shore, jetsam."
He has earned it. It would be nice, and less hypocritical if he paid his taxes in the country that just honoured him. For a guy that has a lot to say about social issues, it looks awful

Hamilton's quest for social justice as always stopped at the point where it might cost him some actual money. Have a look into where his Tommy branded clothing line is being made for more details on that.

Whilst I don't like that so many wealthy people use tax havens to avoid paying taxes in their home country, it's worth remembering that Hamilton did not apply for his knighthood. He was offered it. Therefore, if there is any blame of complaint to be made, it certainly shouldn't in any way be aimed at him.
I think it’s worth pointing out that avoiding tax and being one of the top 5,000 payers are not mutually exclusive. It’s somewhat hypocritical when it comes to his social justice campaigning but as for his knighthood, as a recognition of his sporting achievements, I agree that it’s not an issue.
The problem with Lewis is he has become a marmite character. A rag doll that the dogs of ‘wokeness’ and ‘gammon’ can fight over. As such any issue he is involved in, on or off track, will always end up contentious.
It would be nice, and less hypocritical if he paid his taxes in the country that just honoured him.
Not this absolute rubbish again. Hamilton is one of the top 5000 taxpayers in the UK.
Its disgusting hypocrisy.

I don't have an issue with Hamilton's tax status but I've seen that graphic a few times and it's kind of a stretch. For a start Hamilton has been an MBE for years and nobody cared about his tax status so we can only compare him to Stewart who was knighted in 2001 just after selling a business based in Britain that he founded and employed a decent number of people. Stewart also left the UK for tax exile Switzerland back when the top rate of tax was at 95%. So it's seen as kind of more understandable.
On another note I know Hill lived in Ireland in his racing days. I can find no record of him living in Monaco but happy to be corrected.

I believe you are correct. Ireland is still a tax haven, however, so the point does generally stand.

So what if he doesn't pay all his taxes in the UK? Didn't stop anyone else from getting knighted. Also love how people down play his social justice causes, by saying he should pay more taxes in the UK. The guy alway pays taxes everywhere he goes.
I'm sure if all these complainers ever became successful enough to earn millions and had the option of moving to a nicer place with less tax they will stay in the UK to pay all their taxes....? Tut tut. Stop hating its just sad
People can't enjoy success without having to try to bring people down.
It's very likely that Hamilton's tax situation was looked into by HMRC before giving him the honour. David Beckham was rumoured to have missed out on a knighthood because of a tax dodging scheme.

You are correct. You are also no better than they are with posts like that. This is exactly my point; Lewis is just a rag doll being fought over by two dogs. Both sides taking glee in seeing the other wound up, which is just childish.

I doubt it as I can’t see that he’s done anything wrong. You can argue about the morals of it as much as you want but it’s legal and will have been triple checked by the best accountants out there.

He got rid of it years ago.
Indeed, but I was correct in my comment that backed up the fact his taxes have been discussed for many years.

For someone out of the loop - why is being knighted such a big deal for the Brits? It's some person from an outdated institution with ill-acquired wealth and status somehow giving you the right (???) to call yourself "Sir" - I personally find it ridiculous to the point of being laughable, but it clearly means something to the English folks. Could someone do an ELI5 for me here please?

It's the government not the royal family who decides who gets knighted. It's just an honour bestowed on those who have achieved highly. It's a bit like a lifetime achievement award or a pat on the back from your country telling you you've done a great job. Remember most people who receive MBE's, OBE's, CBE's and even knighthoods are not the rich and famous but ordinary people who's achievements otherwise often go without attention.

Well, except for not getting the right passport, it shouldn't prevent him from being President of the USA.
As my brother said : "I've got the brain of a four year old. I'll bet he was glad to be rid of it".

Thank you, that makes more sense. Why do they let the monarchy do it, instead of the elected representative? And what is the point of being called "Sir xyz" - does it mean anything?

It's less political and a bit more special to be awarded something by the royal family. Most people who are knighted don't insist on the "sir" prefix but it's just a title really like "Dr" for doctor.
So it looks like Toto is gonna let Hamilton wither on the vine for a month, then pull the trigger on Russell.
I hope someone else picks up Hambone so we can see what kind of a driver he really is.
I'd also like to see what sort of driver Hamilton really is. In his 13-14 years or whatever in F1, I've simply not seen enough evidence.
What competition has he even had recently? In 2017 and 2018 Vettel was producing miracles to make it look as if Ferrari could challenge for the titles and Hamilton looked godlike due to having a massive car advantage, yet people try to paint the narrative that the performance of the cars was actually close in those years.
Haven't we had enough of Hamilton by now though? Why see what sort of driver he really is when the sport could be truly invigorated purely through his retirement.

Lewis Hamilton #44
World Drivers Titles: 7 (1st)
Grand Prix Wins: 95 (1st)
Pole Positions: 98 (1st)
Podiums: 165 (1st)

No doubt Hamilton is a great driver. Everyone on the grid is. How many titles and wins would he have if he were in a Renault the last few years? Would he have won the driver championship in a Ferrari in 2020? I say lets put him in something else and see where he slots in. If he can get in an Ashton Martin next year and win the drivers championship, then he is the greatest of all time. If not it's the car.
Need proof. Russell who is always at the back of the field in a Williams was .026 off poll on his teammate who has beaten Hammy for poll a few times and he did it after just a few practices. Hell he didn't even know what the switches did. Then he smoked Bottas, got screwed by his team twice and still kept it together. I'm saying it's 90% the car. But no doubt Hamilton can drive. It's just in that car, so can everyone else.

Who would you guess Williams goes for?
Maybe the new owners got money to blow. Maybe they step it up. I think it would be great if they put Lewis in it and they made huge progress with the car. Odds of that happening are slim to none but you never know.
