The Average Driver

Post by Covalent »

On this forum the term "average" has been used in a rather derogatory manner so I thought I'd find out who you think is the one driver that is exactly in the middle of the pack performance-wise?

The only thing Di Resta will win is this poll. (Evil laughter)

But seriously, Di Resta fits this criteria. He's a good qualifier and racer, solid indeed, but has been outperformed by his last two teammates.

I was going to answer "Vettel", but that has no sense. Although Di Resta was better than Vettel in pre-F1 competitions... (More evil laughter)

Good thinking and Im sure if you answered Vettel, then you'd be ripped apart in this forum. I'd pitch in myself too a little bit (Evil Smile)

On a different note.... I agree Di Resta has performed quite badly if not very badly. Another one that I felt is performing average is Ricciardo. His arrival was hyped quite a lot but hes just fizzled IMO. Whether he is still selected over Vergne as replacement at RBR remains to be seen. All the signs do point in his direction. But I may be wrong in reading the sign.

I picked Di Resta although it could be argued that any one of the bunch of him, Ricciardo, and Vergne would be appropriate as they all tend to bring the car in about where you would expect it to be. While other "not top" drivers often perform better than expected, and others often worse than is expected.

+1

Early days in F1 I know but having followed his performance in other series I'd also suggest Giedo van der Garde is out of his depth.

I haven't selected anyone, as I think that there is not 1 driver who is in the middle and none of the drivers in F1 (even Chilton who seems behind the rest atm) are bad!

There's the top drivers in Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi and Vettel. Then the ones just behind - Button, Massa, Webber, Rosberg.

A few who I think could be good, but haven't been able to prove what they can do in a good car (without crashing out all the time in a couple of cases) - Sutil, Grosjean, Maldonado, Perez, Di Resta, Hulkenberg.

There's this years rookies, who haven't had much chance to show what they can do - Bottas, Gutierrez, Bianchi, van der Garde and Chilton (although I would maybe put Bianchi in my 'not sure' category and Chilton in the next one, but give them chance to get into it and see what they can do)

And then there's the rest, who I would call average - Ricciardo, Vergne and Pic.

Think that's everyone covered, and please remember, this is my opinion. Feel free to disagree!

Why am I not surprised Lewis, Vettel and Alonso were voted as "Average Drivers". One vote each. I'll say none of them who voted are gonna own up for their choice, but just to stir the pot.

@Minchi: I agree with you. I dont know about the rest but my choice was based on only the drivers who had a complete season last year and the 2 races of this year. That is why I havent voted for any of the new guys and I believe they shouldnt be judged on their performance just yet. Even for that matter, I havent considered drivers who've changed teams since not every one gets confortable with the car from the get go.

I think Di Resta is a strong contender. He's just... fine. I'm not against his participation in F1, but I don't see him progressing much further.

On the flip side, there's Perez, who is a completely different kind of average driver. He's more of an average driver on average. By which I mean he has had some stand out races (his podiums last season were hands down better than anything Di Resta has achieved), but he's also had some shockers, too. I'd say that balances out at pretty average.

The difference between the two is that in his stand out races, Perez has shown flashes of talent that hint that he may have the potential to become well above average one day. Di Resta hasn't really demonstrated this yet.

I impulsively clicked Di Resta while slightly drunk without reading past the first post, clicked onto another thread on another browser tab, came back a while later and a true LOL moment ensued.

Edit: How on earth did every WDC and runner up get a vote?! I wish I could see who voted for who...

Good point. Maybe that will change, but between him and Hamilton that's half of this forum's fans, and I doubt that each will vote for the other, so maybe not... Still more than a bit ridiculous though.

Kamui Kobayashi should be an option. Finished 12th (out of roughly 24 drivers) in the last three seasons of F1.

Just to point out to everyone who is voting for race winners that if you win an F1 race you are way above average. About 90% of drivers to race in F1 never win.

Because in your OP you mention this forums use of average, which is usually applied to Button or Webber by people who are trying say they're nit as good as Hamilton or Vettel.

But then you ask for the driver who is average driver as in in the middle of the current F1 talent pool. So taking last year's rankings as an example: Vettel=best, Karthikayan=worst, Kobayashi=middle. But that's not taking car into account.

But you can also look at all professional drivers and say that all current F1 drivers are above average.

I realise that all sounds just as illogical and a little pedantic, but that's my reasoning. :-P

EDIT: forgot to add, for the case of your poll I'd choose any of the bold drivers. So I'll follow the crowd and go for Di Resta!!!!

Di Resta was my choice and the driver I thought of first when I saw this poll. I read down the drivers list and nothing changed my mind.

The rookies you cannot determine yet really, anyone who has put the fab 5 (Lewis, Alonso, Kimi, Seb and Jenson) I think are just blinded with dislike or their perception that one of them is overrated. Others have at least one quality, flaw or quirk that sets them out from average. I cannot think of one with Di Resta.

He is the vanilla of F1.

This is why virtually every poll on such forums is totally worthless. There are always those who think they are "cute" or are either so damn dumb that they do not know any better. Either way, it invalidates every poll,

To be fair these fans are the minority on here at least.

Only 4 votes between Seb, Lewis and Alonso in total around 4 percent. Not enough to distort the real front runners, or front runner in this case.

If you lined that lot up 1st - 22nd. I think Sutil is around 11th and the "average".

I know Di resta is winning in a landslide but I think he is just slightly worse than the average driver, although he an excellent candidate for Mr average in every sense.

Sadly I think Di Resta is the obvious candidate and I will attempt to break it down thusly:

9 of the 10 drivers in the top teams have proven to be above average, all except Perez so far who, despite his strong performances in the Sauber, is still unproven. So we count them out.

I think it's safe to count out Bianchi (he looks to be above average, he might be useless and his teammate might be more useless but we don't know. Probably not average), Chilton and VDG. Pic is a candidate for averageness.

Maldonado, by being a race winner and having strong raw pace, is above average. Same goes for Hulkenberg, minus the race win. Gutierrez and Bottas so far have looked below average, they might turn out otherwise but for the time being we can count them out too.

Out of the FI duo, so far throughout their races together Sutil has more points and has generally looked the more impressive. I believe this elevates Sutil into the upper echelon.

So the candidates are Perez, Pic and Di Resta. Perez can probably be put in the above average category on the same criteria as Hulkenberg. Out of Pic and Di Resta, it's a tough call but since Di Resta is pretty much a proven quantity and Pic is yet to prove himself, Di Resta is the choice I'd make.

I know strictly there are more drivers in the "above average" category than below average so the average will probably end up being around Hulkenberg in the pecking order so the term average doesn't really make sense, but I can't call Hulkenberg average with a straight face.
