We don't know wich drivers Schumacher meant, he spoke about Vettels karting time. Don't think he had a direct comparison with all other drivers around Vettels age.

He did say "coming from karts, Vettel had the most potential of any young driver".
"Any young driver" basically means "all of them".

Also, you don't need a "direct" comparison with all other drivers. Talent is noticed quite quickly and you can be sure that Hamilton was also noticed.

Make of it what you will, but that for me is no small statement to make. I don't necessarily feel that way myself, just pointing out that that part of what LdM said does mean something.

Even Schumacher is not omniscient

It's not as much about Schumacher saying it, but more about LdM confirming he was right.

He didn't do anything wrong there.

Besides he has a point to a degree, to a casual fan titles, wins and poles are how they judge how good a driver is. Vettel has more than Hamilton on all three accounts so the casual fan will probably consider him better purely on stats.

This. It is Monty's opinion that Vettel would be best for Ferrari and to him, the best of the young lot - as Schumi indicated he would be. But Monty's reasons change every minute as to why he doesn't want Hamilton - so he's not too trustworthy, imo. Who knows what he really thinks about either...
