OK so I've done this most years for a while now. A very simple thread for you all to rank the current F1 grid. This concept seems tricky for some but is simple, list the drivers in the order you rate them right now, best at the top. That's it. You're not rating them on this season, just an overall feel for where you think that driver sits right now in terms of his ability.

copy and paste from the list below
do not add numbers or = signs,
no comments before of after the driver names
No even placings
no tiers or groups
No separate lists for racecraft/speed etc


I copy and past the lists to collate the results once we're done.

To make for a valid comparison to the start of the year, all drivers are listed, even if they are not returning next year.

I have just been thinking about this, will post when i make my mind on some of them. This year proved quite a bit and my ratings will change a lot from last year.

In any case, this poll will obviously reflect the bias induced by short memories and recent races. If you take the poll just before the beginning of the new season, it would make much more sense but still the car being a variable conundrum cannot be overcome. A more accurate answer would be to club them in tiers I think.

He does it before and after every season to see where things stand, you may think it has bias but due to the number of contributers the results are not screwed and can be quite fair on how people rate the drivers

you're missing the point - this is just to get a measure of public opinion. I do it each year ( as I said at the start) and see how public opinion shift over time. You don't have to explain your choices , just do a list.

A lot of drivers who I didn't rate so highly have been in very good form towards the end of the year, so it's very hard to rate. People like Hulkenberg, Massa, Maldonado and Ricciardo. The latter three could be set for big rises next year - Hulkenberg less so because he can't prove much at a midfield team with a rookie team mate.

I may come back and revise this.

EDIT: Personally I think this is the toughest one of these I have ever done, the field is just incredible at the moment.

I think my top two stayed consistent and then I know who I think are the three next best but deciding on their order was bloody difficult. But the hardest part though was from Hulkenburg to Glock, in that group I literally think there is barely anything in it and each one of them is absolutely nip and tuck with one another. I probably have been a bit unfair on the Toro Rosso's but neither one has shown any flashes of brilliance and even Petrov-Pic have had one or two.

Out of that mid-field group I picked Hulkenburg and Maldonado as the 'best of the young guns' since I think they have both showed that they just have unbridled speed in spades, probably Pastor being slightly quicker on his day but Nico being more consistent and the smarter racer. Grosjean is blindedly quick but still has not shown improvement and is still erratic, but in time he could get up there. I am still not convinced Perez is better than Kobayashi, I think Kobayashi is quicker overall and more consistent and if he had got those tyre strategies at Sauber it could be him we see eating up that McLaren seat next year...I think his loss is a travesty.

Webber has slipped down more order as he continues to under perform, and this year despite excellent showings in Monaco and Silverstone, he has looked even worse, being involved in crashes and just looking generally looking clumsy, I used to rate him in the Top-5 but as the young guns come up, I can't see him hanging around in F1 for much longer.

Massa has actually moved up in my estimations but I am still not holding my breath to see whether he really can consistently deliver, we have yet to see him back to his best I think.

Paul Di Resta has also taken a big hit as I think he has failed to live up to his own hype, destroyed by Hulkenburg in this half of the season and only looking clumsier by the race. But possibly I am being slightly bias as I get annoyed at his constant stream of excuses as to why he cannot compete with Nico. While he deserves his seat without a doubt and is still a solid runner, I just do not think he is as competitive as The Hulks, The Mals, The Gros, The Kobs and The Perez's of the grid.

I do not think I will ever come up with a list that I am completely satisfied with for the current field as it is just so close, at the moment I think we have to many great drivers and not enough great seats!

With the STR twins I'm never sure if they're being hampered by the car or the car is being hampered by them (same as with Buemi and Algy).

Though I beleive that the perception does get affected by the performance of cars..!

I kept hamilton on the top first looking at the way he has driven in the last three races and in the beginning as well but, his three races Suzuka(though he suffered a problem), Korea and India were nothing to shout about and that in a way again proves me the point of him maybe lesser in the mental strength to compete for WDC at 100% like Vettel, Kimi and Fernando as he was again the best driver since Abu Dhabi...but, that's just my view point n I might be wrong.

Easy to make top 10, not so easy after since it´s impossible to completely isolate driver and car.
Highlights:
1- I really believe even Senna might have done better than Webber in the Redbull
2- Too hard to evaluate drivers on the 3 GP2 teams and some of them might have pottential to be higher on the list
3- I do see good promise on Ricciardo, despite what points can say
4- Watch out next season for Perez, I see him in the title fight
5- I´d really love to see Hulk get a top seat in 2014 to see what is he capable of
6- I expect 2012 to de the last season on the Vettel/Red Bull Dominance and I predict a Fierce fight between Macca and Ferrari for 2013
7- If Kamui gets a seat in Caterham, he will be just the same as Heikki, Good, decent, solid driver but nothing special
8- Too bad Senna is almost out of F1 I like the guy and he might get better of he has one more chance

This list would have been very different half-way through the season.

Based on the entire season. If Massa had been racing like he has recently for the entire season he would be up there with Raikkonen.

I have a gut feeling about Pic, Vergne and Ricciardo, I may be proven wrong next year. Pedro got destroyed by Kobayashi at Sauber, so I don't think beating Karthikeyan can say much about him

Webber has faded

D'Ambrosio... not enough time really

While Maldonado should have doubled his points tally for the season, his pace is clearly there. Senna although solid has mostly underperformed in that car

And all I am saying is public opinion changes with each race and doing it at the end of year is of no special significance than doing it after any other race coz opinions are always heavily influenced based on recent memory.
If this exercise has to be at all meaningful, this should be done right before the start of the season when there are no recent events or races in the minds of the people. I just disagree on the timing of this exercise.
