Rank these four young & upcoming drivers

Post by F1master »

Sergio Perez
Pastor Maldonado
Nico Hulkenberg
Romain Grosjean

If you had to rank them in your personal opinion of best to 'worst', what order would you put them in?

1. Sergio Perez
2. Romain Grosjean
3. Nico Hulkenberg
4. Pastor Maldonado

They're quite different drivers, driving different cars, and therefore very hard to compare. Only Grosjean and Maldonado really seem similar. I think that Perez is probably the most well-rounded of the four, but maybe Grosjean has the best potential.

Really hard and you should put Di Resta in the list as well ;)

I actually have no idea!

Hulks the best all round I think although Maldo and Grosjean are faster in ok:

Perez
Hulkenberg
Grosjean
Maldanado

If Pastor can unlock his speed at least half the time he could easily top this list. As it is there's a nats testicle between each all of them!

You must remember, Hulk trashed Maldonado in GP2 when they were teammates and Hulk was a rookie. Maldonado had two more years of experience. 100 vs 36 points.

Perez
Hulkenburg
Grosjean
Maldonado

While Maldonado might be an upcoming driver, I don't think he's particularly young.

Perez (for consistency, bar his lately driver error)
Grosjean (for bloody fast, doing well when crash free)
Hulkenburg (for great performance in a much inferior car)
Maldonado (also for bloody fast but inconsistent)

* note that all are separated by very tiny margin. They are all going to be rivals in 5 years.

A thing to note:

Maldonado: 27
Grosjean: 26
Hulkenberg: 25
Perez: 22

I really thought Hulkenberg would have been a star by now.

For reference, Hamilton is 27 as well as Rosberg

Both Grosjean and Hulkenberg are future WDC potentials. I don't believe the other two are.

I think Maldonado is the fastest of all of them but unless he can clean up his racecraft he won't get anywhere near a world championship.

Best of them? Can't call it between Hulkenberg and Perez. Grosjean has shown some good overtaking moves but also the polar opposite. If he can clean up his racecraft, thus realising his true potential, I think he can be world champion.

Perez
Hulkenberg
Maldonado
Grosjean

Not much between them, Maldonado's the fastest but the most erratic, and Grosjean ahs the speed but needs to work on his racecraft. I think Checo and Hulk are the most complete drivers of the lot.

As it stands right now.
Hulkenberg
Perez
Maldonado
Grosjean

Hulkenberg and Perez above the others just based on their consistency. If Maldonado and Grosjean could keep their heads out of trouble they would be ahead. I suspect we will see all of these drivers in the run for the WDC at some stage.

This says everything isn't it? That's why McLaren hired Pérez, he's the most promising young driver

I still rate Hulkenberg higher than all of them. Maldonado probably on par or just behind him followed by Perez and Grosjean.
Perez has been terribly inconsistent at times and so has Maldonado. The difference is, Maldonado seems to produce the stunning results on pure pace. Perez got his results due to weather or long run strategy.
I fear for Perez to be honest. He would have been stupid to say no to McLaren, but this move can seriously dent his career if he is still inconsistent next year or is beaten convincingly by Button.
Maldonado seem to have pure speed. He needs to cut down on errors which frankly he has shown he can do better than Grosjean. And that is the only reason Grosjean is last. He does not seem to learn and finds new ways of making mistakes.

Always going to be difficult to rank 4 drivers from 4 different teams who are all obviously performing quite well (pace-wise at least).

But if I had to pick I'd say:

1. Hulkenberg
2. Perez
3. Maldonado
4. Grosjean

You would say they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Maldy is definitely a great qualifier, he is consistent with his pace but not as much his race results.
Perez great in endurance/races, not as consistent in pace but generally able to take the car as high as it can go in races. Grosjean is quick but so far crumbles under pressure.
Hulkenberg probably a great all rounder.

I think Perez is most likely going to win a WDC out of all of them. He's good and still extremely young, I was surprised he's on his second year of F1 at the age of 22.

Excellent question.

I put Maldonado first. I don't think Maldonado is that error-prone; IMO it's aggression and arrogance that he chooses to pursue, so it's not a race-craft issue that he needs to learn to overcome, just a mentality about racing. He definitely has excellent speed - regardless of whether Senna's just terrible in qualifying he also measured up well next to Barrichello and he's gotten the Williams high on the grid not just sporadically. He capitalised on opportunities with his first win. So I don't see any deficits in his ability and I see the capacity to develop and capitalise.

Hulkenberg I'm putting second and Grosjean third, more by virtue of the fact that Grosjean has been making so many errors and in stopping them seems to have lost some of his performance. I think Hulkenberg has pace and is a good racer but I find him very hard to judge because I just don't know how to rate di Resta and if anything I don't think he's that good. However, Grosjean has outqualified Raikkonen on a number of occasions and IMO that's no small feat. Overall I think that Grosjean has shown more potential than Hulkenberg but so far Hulkenberg is capitalising on it more.

As for Perez, I see him more as a driver who runs his own race and waits for the race to come to him rather than making something happen in his race. It is, however, hard to know if that is his style or if that's a product of the way Sauber conduct their races strategically.

IMO all of these drivers have long careers ahead of them and any one of them could be a WDC contender depending on circumstances.

Really tough. I'd put them around the same level at the moment.

In terms of potential, I see Maldonado and Grosjean developing into faster drivers compared to Perez and Hulkenberg.

I know what you mean - but - think Sato or Magnussen in British F3 a few years ago...blindingly quick but F1 is a massively different animal....just saying.
Science is about the natural world, things we can observe, test and gather data for. Why, then, do we teach that life on earth arose spontaneously from non-living matter in school science classes?

Exactly.

If Hulk is so amazing, why didn't McLaren sign him? I'm sure they could have done so for relatively little money.

I don't think anyoneof them will ever be WDC. Their biggest problem being Vettel will most likely also be there for their entire careers.

But ranking:
Perez
Hulk
Grosjean
Maldonado

Well they all had a stunning day today didn't they...

Seriously though, i think that none of these drivers are particularly amazing, they are all okay but thats it. It makes me genuinely question the quality of the future formula 1 drivers

Today we saw Alonso pass Webber on the outside cleanly, and we saw Vettel pass Button cleanly on the outside too. Compare that to what happened when Perez, Maldonado, Grosjean and Di Resta had a go at racing like that and it all ended in tears
