A bit off topic, but Alonso should shave his beard, he looks like a friggin gorilla

Nah, we've been missing a good bit of facial hair since quick Nick left, I like it.

I think it makes him look rather chubby, which I very much doubt is actually the case.

If that beard gets much bushier, it's going to cost him a tenth of a second a lap.

With the Mercedes PU they'd probably still beat McLaren.

Now they know how it felt for Kimi and Fernando to drive the F14T last year :-P

Truly rare, Ferrari 312 T5, Gilles Villeneuve, driving naked car, probably private test at Fiorano 1980.

If I may sort of hijack the thread for a moment, can I ask what the point of such a test would be?

I can't tell exactly, because no info was provided with the picture, so I can only assume some of the following:

1. One Twitter user think it might be the steering wheel size test.
https://twitter.com/stuart_dent/status/ ... 4424014850

2. The car was not reliable, and they might test engine temperature without the cover and sides.

3. They might test some structural connection in the first ever outing, for example. The grass does not look that green so it might be indeed the winter preparation for 1980.

Still, none of this could be the case.

The fact there isn't any bodywork at all might be a pointer. I'm making some assumptions but if it's to test the steering wheel size would they also remove the engine cover? Likewise if it's an engine temp test would they remove the cockpit fairing? Perhaps if they're interconnected somehow. I'd have thought it's more likely to be a simple balls up, but I'm only guessing. Perhaps the bodywork hasn't arrived yet, doesn't fit correctly, is being decaled, has been damaged etc. Great picture though.

I can assure you that they did not remove anything except the upper body cover, going from front to back, and the side mountings that give the air the flow toward the engine. This picture shows how simple it was:

Assuming this is the 312T5 (and not the internally very similar 312T4) the photo would have been taken in the run up to or during the 1980 season. That was, for most teams, the second year of ground effect. The car appears to be running with everything except its ground effect system. Of note, the front and rear wings are in place. Maybe they were just trying to get a feel for the basic car to compare against how it performed with the ground effect system in place.

The 312T5 was not a successful car and failed to keep up with advancements in ground effect due primarily to its 3.0 liter flat 12 engine, which encroached into the diffuser tunnels. Using the same engine, the 312T4 (WDC and WCC car in 1979) was at times competitive with the Williams FW07 during the 1979 season due primarily to the Ferrari's better power and drivability. By 1980, the Williams (and others such as Brabham and Ligier) had advanced so far aerodynamically that the 312T5 was unable to win a single race. Scheckter, the reigning WC, did not even quality in Canada. Interestingly, the following year's 126CK used a 1.5 liter V6 turbo both for the power offered and to get the cylinder banks out of the way for better ground effect. Unfortunately, the 126CK was also a terrible ground effect machine (but it did win two races due to having good power, great brakes, and Gilles Villeneuve behind the wheel). 1982 saw Ferrari put it all together.

Running engines on dyno's was either none existent or hopelessly inaccurate back then. Bodywork was also slower to remove. Testing mechanicals without bodywork is not that unusual.

Niki Lauda reading the newspaper while waiting for the go, somewhere in 1984. F1 was much more relaxed then. He reads an article about what is the favorite food in Switzerland.

I doubt it; looking at where his eyes can easily see the page, I think he is reading the article on who is the new darling of the female TV viewers! :D

What a fantastic picture though!

At best he reads the headline about the new darling of the female TV viewers, but I still think he reads the lower part of the upper article about the favorite foods in Switzerland. :]

Doesn't look that bad there. Still a bit dull, but not pig-ugly. A bit like Anne Hathaway.

When F1 was close to the people....
British GP 1974, Lauda in Ferrari on pole, followed by Peterson in Lotus and Scheckter in Tyrrell. Reutemann, Price and Hunt are behind them in Brabham, Shadow and Hesketh. Notice that first six cars where from different teams. Scheckter won the race ahead of Fittipaldi (started 8th in Mclaren) and Ickx (started 12th in Lotus).

I guess McLaren can be proud that they are now fast enough to be in a position to be overtaken by a Lotus with a broken rear wing.
