PF1 Forum teammate wars vote: Spain 2021

Post by Jenson's Understeer »

For a while there I was thinking I'd need to start this thread by making a joke about whether everyone had woken up after the Spanish Grand Prix, but it actually got vaguely interesting for a bit there, didn't it? Another round of Lewis vs. Max went in favour of the seven time WDC, and it's not just in real life where Hamilton is just edging ahead of Verstappen, for it's the same in the PF1 TMW results. Both the Championship protagonists have started with three TMW wins from three, but only one of them has been perfect in the eyes of the PF1 Forum.

After Portugal, three drivers are the stars of the votes so far. Lewis is one of those, having yet to drop even a single vote, a feat currently matched by only Mick Schumacher. Lando Norris is oh so close to both of them, though, as his performances have limited Daniel Ricciardo to just the solitary vote in 2020.

The three standout stars aside, another three drivers have at least won each TMW round so far. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and George Russell are the three drivers in question, and each has received at least 80% of the vote as well. Max and Charles are only just below getting back into the nineties, with 89.71% and 89.86% of the vote share respectively.

And thanks to the results in Portugal, we now have four teams where both drivers have won a TMW round. First TMW wins of the season came for Antonio Giovinazzi and Sebastian Vettel, allowing each to half the deficit to their teammates, while Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly have both responded to a poor opening weekend in Bahrain by recording back-to-back TMW victories, overhauling the scores in the Alpine and AlphaTauri battles to take a 2-1 lead.

Portuguese GP Vote Results

Mercedes: Hamilton wins with 100% of the vote (29-0)
Red Bull: Verstappen wins with 86% of the vote (25-4)
McLaren: Norris wins with 100% of the vote (29-0)
Aston Martin: Vettel wins with 72% of the vote (21-8)
Alpine: Ocon wins with 66% of the vote (19-10)
Ferrari: Leclerc wins with 83% of the vote (24-5)
AlphaTauri: Gasly wins with 100% of the vote (29-0)
Alfa Romeo: Giovinazzi wins with 96% of the vote (27-1)
Haas: Schumacher wins with 100% of the vote (29-0)
Williams: Russell wins with 86% of the vote (25-4)

Season Scores

Mercedes: Hamilton leads 3-0 (with 100% of the vote)

Most of these are pretty straightforward. I'll highlight the only ones where I see any possibility of disagreement.

First off, Hamilton / Verstappen / Ricciardo / Stroll / Ocon / Leclerc / Gasly / Schumacher / Russell.

Okay, that just leaves us the Alfa pair...

Kimi was pretty dire in qualifying, and I'm uncertain how much of his finishing ahead is down to GIO's abnormal pit stop. I have a feeling Hogweed will know the answer and enlighten us, but I went ahead and voted Kimi. I might be wrong here.

EDIT: And how is Vettel almost splitting the vote with Stroll? Is there something I missed?

Don't be surprised Exediron - Giovinazzi was the unlucky one yet again. Such a coincidence!

Very easy:

Hamilton over Bottas

Verstappen over Perez

Leclerc over Sainz

Ricciardo over Norris

Ocon over Alonso

Russell over Latifi

Schumacher over Mazepin

Closer, but still an easy vote:

Gasly over Tsunoda – The only reason why I put this here is simply because Gasly got himself a penalty and Tsunoda’s race was unknown. Very unlikely that he will have beaten him, but I’ve described the reason why I’ve put them as closer compared to the others.

Stroll over Vettel - Stroll made a great move on Alonso at the start which commentators on both sky and channel 4 highlighted. His move on Alonso later was investigates, But Alonso didn’t really give him enough space despite getting his nose ahead then he got pushed off. I think this is likely why he didn’t get punished as he also did attempt to go left but the kerbs apparently forced him to go right. Reason why I put him closer to Vettel was because Vettel was within 5 seconds at the end.

Giovinazzi over Raikonnen – Ugh, what is it with these two almost always being in a situation that makes it harder to notice that Giovinazzi has actually been the better of the two? First off, he beat Kimi by some margin yet again in qualifying. That was overturned pretty quickly as kimi had a good start and gained 3 places, including one on his team mate. But Kimi was losing time to the cars ahead and Giovinazzi was all over the back of him. He then pitted during the safety car and had a 35 second stop. One of his new tyres were flat. The mechanic noticed this and signalled to the others to remove what hap been fitted then he had to go on his only remaining new set I believe. When he came out during the safety car, a fault on his dash was telling him to follow the safety car delta. So he didn’t catch the pack like he should have done. It in the end resulted in him restarting the race 10 seconds behind the field. He also had to use a used set of tyres at the end due to the flat one from earlier. In the end, he finished around 15 seconds behind Kimi. All things considered, Giovinazzi should get the vote again. The only think Kimi did better was having a better launch. The team believe this bad luck cost Giovinazzi a points finish.

Stroll's defence on gasly was possibly a bit much for some. He could have got a 5 second penalty for that which would have put him behind vettel.

Hamilton - Pretty straight forward, Bottas had a reasonable performance.

Verstappen - Again straight forward, Perez's terrible qualifying made for a poor race.

Leclerc - Better in qualifying and the race, Sainz was respectable.

Ricciardo - A turn around for Ricciardo, Norris was somewhat subdued.

Ocon - Ocon had a nice gap in qualifying, was running ahead in the race and managed not to fall through the field like Aloonso with the failed one stop strategy, this time the two drivers on the same strategy.

Gasly - Did his best in qualifying given the car and finished in the points despite his error at the start, Tsunoda was nondescript.

Stroll - Better in qualifying and ran ahead in the race.

Russell - Better in qualifying and the race.

Schumacher - Schumacher looks like a F1 driver, Mazepin doesn't.

No vote for the Alfa Romeo drivers, Giovinazzi much the quicker in qualifying, Kimi was running just ahead in the race before Giovinazzi's pitstop shenanigans.

I'm genuinely a little surprised to see the Alfa vote so close. As Hogweed explained, Gio's race was basically ruined by his pit stop problem, which he may have got away with had his out lap not been unnecessarily slow (not his fault) as that allowed Williams to double stack their cars and get them both out ahead of him. He was then stuck behind both for nearly 20 laps until they pitted again. Without that he definitely could've been pushing the points.

I think a lot of people (like me) probably voted for Kimi without realizing just how costly GIO's stop was. I remembered it was bad, but I hadn't remembered quite how bad!

I actually didn't realize that! I've amended mine now, since I voted for Kimi without really looking into the facts.

It's a useful feature, I amended a vote earlier in the season when it was pointed out to me that I may have been wrong.

Yeah, I changed it for this year having previously not enabled vote modification. My concern initially was that people would vote one way, then see it wasn't the popular vote and change their vote so they weren't wrong. But as we've established, the voting in these polls is - for the most part, anyway - pretty unbiased, so it was long overdue a change.
