Shame about Perez being in 7th.
It seems he cant handle being in a big team, doing same things he was doing at Mclaren back then.
Or maybe he is just overrated? Any driver that takes 200 races to win a race is not that good... Period
He might be overrated but your reasoning is ridiculous.

Which races in his 200 should he have won before Sakhir last year?
Malaysia 12

He sort of challenged for the win at Monza 2012 after doing brilliant tire managing and catching the eventual race winner Hamilton in the later stages but besides that he never had the car to win until this year. Perez is a good driver.
He fluffed his first chance in Malaysia '12

Ok, let me ask it in a different way..Which top driver have you seen in your lifetime that took 200 races to win a race? Have you heard in F1 the best drivers make it to the best cars... what does it tell you about Perez?
Nobodies ever suggested that Perez is a top tier driver.....

Anybody feel Alonso should hang up his boots? What is he expecting to achieve anyways? Alpine is never going to be better than Merc and RB and he can't even keep up with Ocon!? That means even with a superior car he isn't going to win anything against the top F1 drivers..Does he really feel he has a WDC in him?!!? Embarrassed for him especially after hyping up himself
Who do you even think is good in F1? Lol. It seems you call every driver fairy cakes, so who actually deserves to be in F1? Alonso had used tyres in Q3 first run, where the track was much faster. Him and Ocon have been trading places all weekend on the timesheets, it looks like Alonso just needs t get up to speed in that final flat out single lap speed.

There are only 3 types of drivers in F1
1)Top Drivers
2)Journeyman Drivers
3)Drivers who get kicked out

Perez falls in the second bucket

So being fast in practice counts now? All that counts is Q3 and Alonso has been woefully slow compared to his teammate except first race where he got a lucky break as Ocon was kicked out for no fault of his own.. Barcelona is the best track to get up to speed..These drivers know the track so well.. Heck even MS out qualified Nico here in 2010!
Also i imagine Alonso's intent is not to just make up the grid in F1!? A driver with his resume is only there to compete for a WDC.. You really think it's possible?
Ocon is not exactly Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen or even George Russel!

You heard correct.

The basic understanding I took away from his comments is he suggested the team is giving him an inferior car setup & the errors are really not his fault.

I think he even at one point said words to the effect that the car cannot keep up with him.

Not a bad allegation to make from a rookie in just his 4th F1 weekend.
That's not a good look at all. By all means be a whingebag on the radio when you've proved yourself, but not in the middle of a period of underperforming. Even if he genuinely believes that his team are giving him inferior equipment for reasons I can't fathom, it's best to keep quiet about it at this stage.

That’s a bit surprising considering the general thought was that Merc had the advantage through the slower corners.

Not something of a big news but Mazepin is 1.2 secs slower than Schumacher.
I think the opposite would make it bigger news!
I'm noticing more that Kubica was 2.2 seconds behind Giovinazzi. Many say (and are right to) that Giovinazzi isn't that good, but I really struggle to understand why Kubica is still involved and even in the position to be a reserve driver. He seems to be that slow that I would question if he really is capable of handling the cars close to their actual ability. Is harsh of me to say this, but I personally think he looked more off the pace on average in 2019 than Mazepin has been so far this year.

Nothing stops his comeback from being impressive given what he's been through, but I still wonder why he takes part in practice. It isn't like he's a driver who needs to be learning for a chance of a seat in the future and I also can't really see how he can help develop the team many better than Kimi.
His sponsors have paid for it, something in the region of $20M.

Did the muscle injury cause the spin though? If it is enough of a distraction to start triggering mistakes, surely it isn't that sensible to continue if it got "worse and worse as quali developed" which is one thing he stated.

Based on what? What special things did Bottas do in qualifying before merc? remind me again of any standout performances
Bottas put his Williams in the top 4 grid slots 20 times in 4 years. That's excellent given Williams wasn't that great from 2015-.

As for standout performances:
  • Canada 2013 - Bottas qualified P3 in a terrible Williams as a rookie. Ahead of Rosberg and Webber.
  • Russia 2016 - Bottas qualified P2 ahead of Hamilton.
So you're telling me Bottas was viewed as a qualifying specialist before he joined Merc? Simple yes/no answer..
Yes.

I disagree with his view of himself. He drove slowly and was not on a fast lap. Yet, he decided to steer his car into the racing line of Norris on his quick lap. Next to this being a no-go, it also is seriously dangerous. It would have deserved a severe and effective penalty and not this joke. His reaction in the link you posted where he basically claims to have been doing nothing wrong further supports the ineffectiveness of the joke penalty.

I fear that the combination of incompetence and feeling of entitlement that Mazepin shows will lead to someone getting hurt sooner or later if FIA and Haas keep bowing to his fathers billions. I am concerned.

He's done nothing wrong in this case. He has to put his car somewhere and it's a huge fustercluck. How is he supposed to know who is on a fast lap and who isn't? Also by that point he needs to be concentrating on his own fast lap.

Even Norris defended him in the stewards room. Just a ridiculous flex of the muscles from the stewards TBH.

He is supposed to know who is on a fast lap because his engineer told him ( as the reports say and he himself does not even seem to deny this).

It's a blatant thing, really.

When there are that many cars all around you, i'm not sure any driver would instantly know who everyone is and what they are doing. That will likely be too confusing even for the best of drivers. I had some patience for Mazepin, but he has shown to be pretty terrible so far, but I can't see how he is to blame for this. Other drivers have done far worse in the past in terms of getting in the way without even being investigated - and these didn't involve the chaos of multiple drivers unfortunately being in the same place at the same time.

I thought this penalty almost seemed a kvyat like penalty as if they know he gets or will get a lot of penalties - so they may as well give him one when they get the chance. It was simply overkill IMO.

The only thing that might rescue Mazepin from picking up race bans this season is the fact that car and driver are too slow to be regularly involved in wheel to wheel racing.

Why do you think so? He directly drove into the path of Norris, destroying his fast lap, no?
https://www.racefans.net/2021/05/08/nor ... k-mazepin/

I don't think Mazepin could have done any better. 2 drivers overtook him and then he was left without much choice but to also ruin his own lap. I think there should have been no action taken here.

Mazepin is incompetent but giving him penalties for joke reasons won't help anyone.
He is supposed to know who is on a fast lap because his engineer told him ( as the reports say and he himself does not even seem to deny this).

It's a blatant thing, really.
Not in this case. There are loads of cars around. I'm not sure how Mazepin is supposed to know who is who in a split second. Just unfortunate really.

Edit: Now I've seen this replay, it certainly has made me defend Mazepin even more. Kimi and Tsunoda came past like they were on a fast lap which he won't have had warning about. That could have confused him since he got told Norris was coming. Then Kimi and Tsunoda backed right off and to me it looked like Mazepin tried to get going. With this amount of mess and about 7 cars all at the same time in those 3 tight corners, it would be hard for any driver to work out what was going on. Vettel even went on the track where your best time would get deleted to try and get out the way. It was chaos and Mazepin shouldn't have been penalised.

He was viewed as an unknown assumed to be fast, the same as Verstappen was from his 2015/2016 pairing with Sainz.

Hamilton is claiming Red Bull used a rear wing that was able to bend. He says that probably gave Max three hundredths advantage.
https://www.planetf1.com/news/lewis-ham ... endy-wing/
Yes as been said it's 3 tenths not 3 hundredths, Red Bull like their flexi wings and I would ask is it normal to find so much time with a rear wing or once again are Red Bull playing with legality and being one step ahead of the stewards.

I don’t think the speed trap/top speed figures back up Hamilton’s claim from qualifying.

Let's hope F1/FIA draw the correct conclusion from the qualifying debacle in the final chicane. This current qualifying format may serve its purpose with regards showing the big teams' sponsors more, but it is downright stupid.
