I noticed that Latifi was only 2 - 3 seconds behind russell before he pitted. Then when both had pitted, he managed to overtake. Thought Russell likely lost out due to not having his tyres warmed up as now he looks quicker again. Still, Russell's race pace isn't matching qualifying, similar to bottas.

Red Bull the king of half measures yet again for strategy. Wait long enough to chose a strategy that would have been quicker pitting earlier, but not long enough to put on soft tyres and do something productive.

Its the truth though, it's not really a great situation with such equal cars in a tight championship race

i think i have somewhat under rated Ocon in recent years. It could be that him matching Perez was more of a good sign for him rather than negative for Perez. He looked destroyed by ricciardo, but now he's looking pretty impressive folloing the first race.

It's not Bottas' fault that he out-qualified Lewis.

That would be a stupid move imo. Hamilton is going to breeze past and they are just destroying Perez's chances of a podium.

He's currently about 6 seconds behind possibly the greatest driver ever. Not too shabby. Either that or you truly believe he's really rubbish which then undermines Lewis' greatness rather a lot.

You seem to forget Bottas spent most of the race holding Hamilton and Verstappen up plus Hamilton is obviously managing. I dont think Bottas is rubbish but his pace before the pitstops was really poor and without a Hamilton overtake could have cost Mercedes the win.

I hope Valtteri stays on the grid and can prove his strength against a Sainz, Ocon or Gasly. Unless Hamilton has totally broke him like he broke Kovalainen.

On a side note i love how little Croft and Brundle (less so) know about any part of the race outside of the top 5. Alonso was right behind Ricciardo all race and with both pitting very late theyre obviously going to be catching up with the pack.

Exactly, that and ignoring blue flags. But surely he can't be a minute off Schumacher based on nothing but pace. Did he spin?

it does seem that Hamilton is only slightly faster as the gap still hasn't gone over 2 seconds. Bottas's pace is solid, but just not quite on hamilton's level.
Nah, Hamilton and Verstappen are on a clear different level to Bottas, Hamilton has just spent 20 laps in Bottas dirty air, the other way round and Hamilton would be well up the road.
And that didn't happen did it. I'm saying that Hamilton currently isn't that much quicker, and Verstappen isn't passing, and Verstappen couldn't pass hamilton in the "Bottas train". Both are quicker, But Bottas did what he needed to make it harder for them. which is what led to this situation
You really are so defensive of Bottas, pretty obvious Bottas was holding up Hamilton and now Verstappen. For Verstappen to overtake Bottas it will be so difficult. Pretty obvious Hamilton is managing his tyres.
The problem for me is that I have no idea how some people regard the Hamilton Bottas comparisons. Whist nobody can deny that one is clearly better than the other, I tend to simply read one of the two following comments.

1 Lewis is so good. Look how he destroys Bottas.
2 Bottas is so bad. He can't get close to Lewis.

So, if Lewis is that good, perhaps Bottas isn't that bad, just not as good as one of the greatest ever. Or is is that Bottas is so bad, he's making Lewis look better than he really is!!!!!

I think when people say Bottas is bad they mean he's not good enough to justify being in the best car. I can only speak for myself but I don't think Bottas is bad but I am continually frustrated by his lack of fight and the fact that he's prevented us from seeing how a different driver would stack up against Hamilton for the last 5 seasons.

And I agree with you. I'd love a number of other drivers to be put in the other Merc alongside Lewis. But so many write him off as being useless. If that's really the case, then Lewis doesn't look quite as good as he did before. (By the way, I believe Lewis is incredibly good.)

No one has said Bottas is useless but I see nothing wrong in saying Bottas was the biggest threat to Mercedes win. If Hamilton didnt overtake Bottas then the chance of a Verstappen win gets bigger. Maybe it sounds harsh but I already think Hamilton should be made number 1 even in an obvious situation like today but Hamilton is good enough to take that worry away from Mercedes.

Hamilton would have got preferential strategy from P3 or from P2 if Max undercut. I think Bottas gets the benefit of the doubt in Round 3.

Just about to say the same thing. It's pathetic. Imagine Lewis has a puncture as he did in Silverstone last year. Just such a stupid rule. I get no pleasure from watching it and it's nothing to do with the race.
