F1 drivers join social media boycott

"Formula 1 drivers are joining this weekend’s boycott of social media, in protest at online abuse. Some - for example Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Daniel Ricciardo and several others - have been explicit about it."

Seems that others Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas have been clear about their opposition to hate.
One name stands out by its absence from that list though!

The only driver I've seen posting to social media about Portugal is Mazepin, but even that was only the Thursday track walk I think.

Agree with the boycott. I wonder if there's a way to make it permanent.
As a guy who was working in the tech space when the inter web was unleashed on humanity, I'm particularly disappointed on the aspects of human nature that are revealed and emboldened by the thing we call social medial. I mean, with anonymity and distance the golden rule goes out the ruddy window init. "Oh the humanity".
It's dreadful how these platforms productize you and your personal information and then flog it to the highest bidder.

Have to ask, what is this actually going to achieve? It doesnt seem like the most positive action...

Thanks. Then I have no idea who the exception is. I've heard that Mika Salo isn't getting involved but I'm not sure he's that conspicuous.

In reality, it probably won't achieve anything in terms of reducing abuse on social media. I think the target of the boycott is more the social media companies themselves and their lack of action in tackling the abuse on platforms, rather than the abusers.

I guess it's a way for a large amount of very high profile social media users, to tell the world that they are against the racism that happens on social media, every minute of every day. It won't stop them, but it lets them know.
What really needs to be done is for social media companies to simply ban anyone who posts anything racist, homophobic or similar. What gets me is that if I try to post a video on YouTube with a musical accompaniment, I get a message asking if I have permission to use the music. So, algorithms exist to automatically detect copyrighted music which is fine by the way, but they don't seem anywhere near as proactive to create an algorithm to automatically detect racist comments. It relies on people reporting it and there simply arent enough hours in a day to report and sort it all.
