Last season, Portimao was the circuit where Mercedes had the biggest pace advantage over Red Bull anywhere. Hamilton was about 6 tenths per lap faster than Verstappen on average and finished 35 seconds in front.
I’m expecting a Red Bull pole and Mercedes win.

A 2nd DRS zone has been added after turn 4.

I like the track because it has a lot of character but even more so because cars can overtake.
Putting my Hamilton hat on now, even though the Red Bull is ultimately the quickest car, which we see in qualifying, having better tyre wear should give Hamilton fair chance of winning the race on a track were you can actually overtake.

Love this circuit, it's great to see it back again for this year. Hopefully it can be a permanent fixture.
Re: 2021 Portugal Grand Prix Free Practice & Qualifying Thread
I also think the existing DRS zone has been shortened, which is probably a good thing as it was too easy to pass last year down the main straight. Hopefully they haven't overcompensated though.

Ah that perhaps reduces Hamilton's chance of a win then.

Turns 1, 4 & 15 will be monitored closely for track limit violations. Last year, in the first 2 sessions alone, 125 laps were deleted for going off track.

Seeing this graphic, it reminds me a lot of the Spanish GP!
It's like the Spanish GP if the Spanish GP was good.

It'll be interesting to see if Mercedes still has an advantage on Red Bull here in pace this season. If indeed they actually have a general disadvantage instead, it's possible the pace will be more equal.
Personally, I expect Mercedes to have a slight advantage rather than the crushing one of last season, but perhaps I'm being optimistic.

Has there been any reports of upgrades for Merc/Red Bull this weekend?
Yes but to Ferrari & Red Bull. Last race, Mercedes got upgrades for stabilizing their back end.
Ferrari have got a new cape on their car whereas Red Bull have brought modifications to their brake ducts which will supposedly help in warming up of their tyres.

I might be being stupid here, but the cars don’t look to be anywhere near the edge of the track at turn 15. Seems an odd place to single out for track limits.

Don't do that, Valtteri - don't give us hope that you'll finally be in the mix again only to finish a distant P2/P3.

However, what bothers me more is how bad the official F1 channel is getting. This literally looks like something a random person has filmed on their phone in portrait and looks very out of place here.

Vettel stopping in the wrong pit box!

Whether the official F1 channel is getting terrible or not is irrelevant - this has no bearing on the format of this video. This is a YouTube short, and only portrait videos can be uploaded as YouTube shorts. It's YouTube's attempt to make a TikTok competitor for short form content and they have confusingly mixed it in with their regular content creating this confusion. But that's a YouTube decision, not the channel creators.

Well, fair enough that it isn't this channel though, but i still can only say cropping or filming this sport in portrait is pretty silly. F1 cars are long and flat not tall and thin! Other than people watching on phones, all TVs and monitors are landscape which makes the decision even more strange.
