I actually think a fair assessment of Grosjean's F1 career would come to the conclusion that he was never lacking in speed, but instead in other areas. He was a match (at least) for Kimi during their final season together at Lotus, and generally quicker than KMag at Haas.

That said, qualifying is the least important part of an IndyCar weekend. It should be interesting to see if he can hold onto it.

Very very early days, but after 10 of 85 laps, including a short, full course yellow, he's ahead by over 2 seconds.

Grosjean in second having led for a long time. However, different strategies so all to play for. Very exciting stuff!

Well, a brilliant win for Veekay. Grosjean got stuck behind Bourdais for a while and ended up second, about 5 seconds off the win. Still, a brilliant drive. I think Indy has had 3 first time winners out of 5 races this year!!!!!

Grosjean seemed to get held up quite a bit by slower cars one being Veekay's teammate Montoya.

And so far no double winners.

If this keeps up, I could forsee Romain running a full schedule next year.

There is some real depth of talent in the Indycar field this year. Drivers like Dixon, Power, and Newgarden are going to have to work very hard to hold of the crop of young drivers.

I hike it was a superb drive by Veekay, Grosjean’ steam coat hun the win by leaving him out too long. He should have pitted first in order to pull his lead even further because initially he was untouchable on pace in clean air. Leaving him out as long as they did slowly brought the race Veekay’s way and Sato’s move was rather dirty if you ask me. He was a lap down and and unlapping himself in the way that he did is a serious No-no and the stewards should have penalized him for it.

Slower cars, especially ones that are a lap down should never interfere with the guys fighting in the top 10 positions, and he’s been around too long to pull that nonsense. Grosjean drove quite well and showed he’s still an excellent driver.

I think the big Texas crash, and Veekay's Indy test crash, both served to underline why he doesn't want to do the ovals. It would take a lot for him to change that stance.

If the new LMH category takes off over the next few years, I could see someone like Grosjean moving to that. If he really doesn't want to risk the high speed ovals, I can't see him being in Indycar for too long.

Penske looking in serious trouble this weekend and next. No cars in the Fast 9, 2 (technically) at risk of being bumped. Realistically the bumped cars I expect will be Enerson and either Kimball or Karam. But 2 Penske cars at the back of the field could be a recipe for drama. Or the embarrassment of the Captain's cars being lapped repeatedly.

Re: IndyCar 2021

The Penske drivers have had a pretty bad month of May. Grid positions are as follows: Scott McLaughlin - 17th, Joseph Newgarden - 21st, Simon Pagenaud - 26th, and WILL POWER - 32nd.

....but all four of the Penske pilots made the top ten on carb day practice (presumably in race trim)

Power and Pagenaud both have been to victory lane at the brickyard and I would not count any of the Penske pilots out but they are not my favorites.

Dixon is the logical choice to drink the milk. I think the drivers who are likely to give him trouble are Herta, VeeKay, Palou, Castroneves, and possibly Sato. I am fully expecting the winner to come out of those six drivers.

Anyone got any money on the 500?

I put a couple of quid on the longer shots (Fittipaldi, Kellett, Chilton and de Silvestro) more hoping to luck in on strategy rather than any expectation they can win in any other circumstances. £2 on each at 500/1 felt like it was worth a punt, though I think a couple of them are probably too slow to even take advantage on strategy. Then £20 on Jack Harvey, returning a potential £1120. Feel like he's due a bit of luck. Also a more realistic bet on Ed Carpenter to return £110.

Maybe we should have an Indy 500, or maybe even a full Indycar, prediction game next year? Could be interesting to see how that goes.

Scott Wilson's wreck on pit road ends not only his race but results in placing Dixon and Rossi in real race trouble, both now down a lap. Seems they both ran out of fuel in the pit and vapor locks caused both to lose a lap getting re-started (and both still have to make a real non-emergency stop for full service).

Wow, the man upstairs really looking down on Rahal and others there as the improperly attached left rear wheel on the pit outlap sends him hurtling across the track in front of the leaders.........

Go Castroneves!!!

Scenes if Dixon wins it pitting one less time

Rooting for Power, making up solid ground, maybe not quite good enough though

Will was doing good until the brakes let him down pitting, not certain he'll overcome that incident, my man Castroneves is hanging tough. I would not bet against him....

Shame for Dixon and Rossi to be basically eliminated by timing, but the championship setup now as well as the fairytale of the 4th 500 win for Helio should make for a great season.

We got lucky as Conor Daly hit the loose wheel (at reduced speed) punting it into the infield. Fortunately it seems to have hit the ground harmlessly.

In 1987 a loose wheel from Tony Bettenhausen's was hit by Roberto Guerrero's car and launched into the upper grandstand between turns 3 & 4 killing a spectator.

This was almost a really good shout, if you'd only bet on both Meyer Shank cars...

Congratulations to Castronoves. I was rooting for a McLaren of course, but you can never feel bad when Helio wins!

Fastest Indy 500 - EVER.

33 Starters and 22 finished on the lead lap with no 'Lucky Dog' rules to give lap down cars a lap back. 6 cars finished 1 lap down. 28 finished less than 2 laps (5 miles) down after 500 miles.

How sad for Newgarden. Leading with about 5 or 6 laps to go, safety car and then on the restart with 2 laps left, engine problems (I think) left him stranded and basically out.

Palou wins and takes a pretty big championship lead.

Grosjean a strong 5th place.

Also, we all know this already, but Road America is fantastic.

Penske need to get a handle on their reliability. Pity for Magnussen too, although he wasn't looking like he could take advantage of the different strategy anyway.

Palou is starting to put a hand on that Astor Cup. It's almost certainly going to be a Ganassi champion this year, they're first and third now. Palou has the raw pace, and Dixon has the consistency. I can't see O'Ward holding p2 unless he improves his consistency, fast.

Last night, I watched a little bit of the practice from the new Nashville street circuit. Whilst not a terribly interesting circuit, the bridge sections are fantastic although I think F1 drivers would refuse to race on it. The bumps as the circuit transitions on and off the bridge are crazy. The car control was stunning to watch.

Watching the steering wheels literally snap in their hands as they come off the bridge is... definitely something. That's surely going to catch someone out during the race when they're pushing on cold tyres.

I wouldn't like to crash near a bridge. Mind you, the F1 drivers have come close at times on the bridge in Singapore. So AW, I don't think you can really say the F1 drivers wouldn't race on it.

I was talking a little tongue in cheek, but you know what F1 drivers are like for complaining about bumpy surfaces!

Results of qualfying:
1. Herta
2. Dixon
3. Palou
4. Rossi
5. Rosenqvist
6. Grosjean

Palou gets a six grid place penalty on the start tomorrow for an unauthorized engine replacement after a test session last weekend.
