Rank the Drivers, December 2020

Post by Mod Aqua »

I have hopefully got the ranking polls working with the new forum, but there may be bugs, but I will take a Cyberpunk 2077 approach and release before doing any QA work.

As always, you must rank all drivers in the list, from best to worst. No drivers can be equal, no driver can be omitted.

This is for all the drivers who competed in the 2020 season. The ranking should be where you see their ability as a driver, not necessarily how they performed in the 2020 season. Think of it as - if you were hiring a driver, with money no problem, right now solely as their ability* as an F1 driver, the list is the order of preference.

(*so no 'I wouldn't hire them because of their tweets' or 'I don't think they would get on with another driver' or 'they would be too expensive')

Edited to remove Kubica who was left in by accident - apologies if you already voted

Ocon is missing...

I don't know if many people have voted yet (don't think you can see until you've done it yourself) but I would have excluded the drivers who did the odd race tbh. I can see Hulkenberg skewing things a bit.

When I enter my 1-20 I'll be putting Aitken, Fittipaldi, Hulkenberg as the bottom three.

Oops, added. Can anyone who voted revote please.

The purpose is NOT to rank their performance in the season. The purpose of the poll is to rank their ability as a F1 driver at this moment in time. If it was a season performance poll I would 100% agree with you, but this is a poll to rate them as drivers.

Here is how I voted in the poll:
1Hamilton
2Leclerc
3Verstappen
4Ricciardo
5Perez
6Russell
7Bottas
8Vettel
9Norris
10Sainz
11Gasly
12Hulkenberg
13Ocon
14Kyvat
15Raikkonen
16Stroll
17Giovianzzi
18Albon
19Grosjean
20Magnussen
21Fittipaldi
22Aitken
23Latifi
Had to redo this as your Ocon is missing message appeared while I was previewing this response! Originally I went Max at number 2, but on reflection I think that Charles really stepped it up this season - some of the performances he pulled off in the Ferrari, mostly in qualifying but also in the race - I mean, two podiums in dry conditions in a car that finished 6th in the championship with an engine that couldn't pull the skin off of a rice pudding.

But the top 3 are the clear S tier of Formula 1 at the moment. Max continued to perform where we expect and still shows moments of impatience and frustration. Ricciardo, Perez and Russell are all very close to the S tier, S-tier elect. We know that Ricciardo is comfortably ahead of Vettel and was basically a match for Max at Red Bull, however as Max was much younger then, one would assume the scope for development was smaller for Ricciardo than Max since then.

We then get to the Bottas through Ocon tier. Here things are fuzzier - but Vettel's stock has plummeted since Germany 2018. Bottas is treading water, and Sainz, Gasly and Norris are on the rise. Hulk should have a seat on the grid no question, but I rate him better than Ocon based on how Hulk and Ocon compared against Perez and Ricciardo.

Kyvat straddles the next tier, but ultimately, he's not as a quick as Gasly but really he should be in F1 too. Kimi is just doing F1 for fun and it shows, but he's more talented than those below him. Stroll and Gionvianzzi show the development that can happen when a driver doesn't have the "you can get fired by Marko at any moment" Russian roulette of the RBR young driver program.

Albon is probably the nicest guy on the grid, and he has shown speed in earlier categories but he has never looked like he belongs in F1, but he's better than all those below him.

1. Hamilton
For me, there’s been two standout drivers this year, and they’re very hard to separate - Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. I think it’s a vote for either maximum points or maximum performance when comparing the two. Hamilton has been faultless in hoovering up nearly all points available to him, despite Bottas sometimes only marginally slower than him (particularly in qualifying). Therefore my vote for Hamilton stems from a belief that he could not have done much more than what he’s achieved this year.

2. Verstappen
An argument for Verstappen being number 1 is that he is overachieving in what is clearly an inferior car to the Mercedes. I think he’s really extracting maximum performance from that car. I think what sways my vote is one Grand Prix - the Turkish GP - where Verstappen messed up and failed to capitalise in a position that he could have won in. The rest of the year, he’s not only been incredibly consistent, but incredibly fast.

3. Ricciardo
Ricciardo’s dominance over Ocon this year has been incredibly impressive. A best of the rest that comes out on top of the midfield battle quite often in what is probably a car that’s worse than both Racing Point and McLaren.

4. Leclerc
Top of the field in terms of qualifying, but has made too many blunders in the midfield for me to pick him above Ricciardo. Of course, he’s blitzed Vettel in dry conditions this year, but I think that goes to show Vettel’s lack of performance this year, rather than a meteoritic rise.

5. Perez
An average start to the season, but a fantastic end to it. Stroll had the measure of Perez in one or two races, and I think his lack of qualifying pace may have resulted in him not being best of the rest in the first half of the season, when Racing Point were incredibly strong. He’s been as good as anyone in the last handful of races however.

6. Sainz
7. Gasly
8. Norris
9. Hulkenberg
10. Russell

Sainz is starting to get the recognition he warrants, and ever since he signed the Ferrari contract, he’s been fantastic. Monza is a an example of how great Sainz and Gasly have been this season. It’s a bit harsh for Norris to be two place behind Sainz, but Sainz has had the measure of him since the summer. Russell is definitely an exceptional talent, but there’s examples of where he hasn’t capitalised in race positions, which is why he is below the two Macca drivers for now.

11.Bottas
12.Kvyat
13. Stroll
14. Ocon
15. Raikkonen
16. Vettel
17. Albon
18. Giovinazzi
19. Grosjean
20. Magnussen
21. Latifi
22. Aitken
23. Fittipaldi

I think there’s some gap between these drivers and the ones above. I think this is one of Bottas’ worst season’s yet. He hasn’t looked faster than Hamilton in any race this year IIRC. Kvyat, Stroll, Econ, Raikkonen are hard to separate. Vettel has been bad, but not as bad as Albon. The rest I can’t comment on much because I don’t take an active interest in them.

  18. Magnussen

  23. Latifi
EDIT: If the format allowed, I'd split this into tiers, with 3-4, 5-7, 8-14, 15-20 and 21-23 hard to tell apart. It's also not really fair on Fittipaldi and Aitken given they had so few races, they might well be perfectly good F1 drivers but we haven't really seen enough races.

Hardest was 7th-12th which really could be in any order.

Ocon is so high because I can't justify putting him far below Perez.

The top 2 are fairly obvious, with Verstappen having the speed but not quite the maturity or racecraft that Hamilton has. Leclerc has shown plenty of speed but has been in too many accidents to put at the same level at this stage. Russell I have always rated very highly, and at Sakhir we saw a glimpse of the talent I always thought he had.

Many of the others could really be put in any order, it is hard to separate them.

Ocon was equal to Perez in 2018 . There is no reason to believe Perez has got drastically better or Ocon drastically worse so I had to put them close together. Vettel is very hard to place. Basically depends how much weight you chose to give 2020 and where you think Vettel's true level lies. Bottas I simply think is a shade better than Sainz who himself is a shade better than Norris. Don't forget Sainz was beaten by Hulk not so long ago. As I said though 7th-12th could be in any order and I wouldn't argue.

As for Stroll, I simply don't think he's very good. I can't see any reason to put Stroll any higher. Maybe he could go above Albon but If he was with Giovinazzi at Alfa do you really think he'd be beating him?

I may like Bottas, but I still see evidence that when Vettel is comfortable, he really can stand out at times. I still think that if he manages to recover (entirely possible), he will likely be better than Bottas will get. Ocon however I wouldn't say is better than Bottas or will get much better. He's been beaten by Ricciardo more convincingly than Hamilton has beaten Bottas, and I don't think Ricciardo is as good as Hamilton.

I do actually think I agree more with Mikes list more than many (wait, are we thinking slightly similar for once? 8O ) but do think Stroll is rated somewhat low.

Given he has clearly had by far his best season and did look at least relatively close to Perez for a fair chunk of it. Or Perez himself wasn't that great at that stage. I know it isn't just about this season, but I still think Stroll has shown that he is improving. I said before that I would rate him in the top 10 (based on just this season) mid way through the season. I certainly wouldn't now, but would rate him 15th at least in terms of his capability. I think he will keep improving season by season. He came into F1 too early and I still think he's more capable than many give him credit for. Just think he seems to need more time than others to improve.

Judging by how low Vettel is, I'm guessing a lot of people thought so as well!

Either that, or his stock has really dropped lately.

I was using my overall perception of him. First there was 2014, then a couple of decent years albeit with a fairly cushty seat next to Kimi. Then from 2018 onward it was just one silly mistake after another. Then Charles came in and whooped him for two years.

He makes far too many mistakes, frequently cracks under pressure and just looks well off the pace of even that bucket of an F1 car.

I appreciate this joke!

Here is how I voted in the poll:
1Hamilton
2Verstappen
3Leclerc
4Ricciardo
5Sainz
6Russell
7Norris
8Vettel
9Perez
10Ocon
11Hulkenberg
12Bottas
13Gasly
14Raikkonen
15Albon
16Giovianzzi
17Stroll
18Kyvat
19Magnussen
20Grosjean
21Latifi
22Fittipaldi
23Aitken
My top four is pretty self-explanatory.

I highly rate Sainz and Norris so they are also up there! Vettel stays 8th because I think he's very peaky, with a car he likes he's one of the best out there (very Raikkonen-esque).

Then you are really splitting hair between Perez-Ocon-Hulk-Bottas. I can't see any of those drivers being clearly superior to any of the others over a few seasons as teammates. Gasly and Raikkonen follow up the rear although I probably have slightly overrated Kimi in the grand scheme.

Finally, my somewhat controversial garbage tier. Fittipaldi and Aitken are hard done by but we'll see. Kvyat is also hard done by but I do think he has regressed.

This is not exactly related to this thread, but not far enough off topic to create a new one. But my post can be removed if this isn't appropriate.

But here is how the drivers have given their view for the top 10 drivers this year:

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/arti ... b24z5.html

Looks like the grid rate Grosjean higher than anyone!

After the first 7 I would say it raises some eyebrows, not all drivers voted though, just 15.

WIth the drivers there will be camaraderie - so I expect the ratings for Grosjean and Albon are inflated to Romain's accident and Alexander's gut punch of a season. Although they were allowed to vote for themselves in the poll...

Indeed you shouldn't be allowed to vote for yourself.

Ah crap, I totally missed that it was meant to be how we view them each overall, not based on how we view their 2020 performance.

Is there any way a mod can reset my vote so I can do it properly?

Mod resets reset the entire poll, not any individual's, and that's not really viable given how many have voted.

I will work on an update to allow revoting in the future, but to be honest - with more than 20 people voting, it won't make that much difference, especially as I assume that your season performance isn't the exact opposite of your current performance ratings.

It seems that all the votes are in now, we may get one or two more, I give my top 10 and the difference with the consensus in brackets. I've gone with about every other list I've seen with having the same top 10 including this one although all the other top 10's don't necessarily have the same order, however the top 2 is consistent with every list I've seen.

01. Lewis Hamilton (-)
02. Max Verstappen (-)
03. Charles Leclerc (-)
04. Daniel Ricciardo (-)
05. Sergio Perez (-)
06. George Russell (-)
07. Valtteri Bottas (+3)
08. Carlos Sainz (-1)
09. Pierre Gasly (-)
10. Lando Norris (-2)

I've been keeping track of the voting and with Hamilton and Verstappen it was very easy to see how the votes went with the majority having them in the top 2, so after 30 votes it went like this:-

1. Hamilton 1.21 (24x1st, 6x2nd)
2. Verstappen 2.07 (5x1st, 18x2nd, 7x3rd)

Leclerc managed to bag 1x1st.

I voted Sainz, Norris, and Bottas lower than the consensus, and Gasly higher. For the first 6, I have them in exactly the same order. Hulkenberg was my other driver in the top ten instead of Bottas.

I can't see voting Leclerc first on the strength of this season. His speed was excellent -- and I personally believe in terms of absolute pace he is faster than Hamilton or Verstappen -- but there were far too many silly errors, including the inexcusable taking himself and his teammate out in Austria.

8Norris
9Hulkenberg
10Bottas
11Vettel
12Raikkonen
13Gasly
14Ocon
15Albon
16Giovianzzi
17Stroll
18Magnussen

I felt I couldn't really rate a driver that had only done 3 races and the reality for the Hulk was that in 2 out of 3 race weekends he was slower than his teammate so on performance alone I couldn't put him in the top 10.

I thought about dropping Leclerc below Ricciardo because of some of the incidents he was involved in but when I look at were he finished in the WDC driving the 7th fastest car, although the risk/reward went terribly wrong for him at times overall it kind of paid off for him.

I think about half of the votes are more for season performance and the other half a general longer range view on the pecking order.

This is why cynical me has kept track of the voting, two late votes have come in, one I have to judge as a Max fan that has Max in first and Hamilton down to 6th. :)

So know we have:-

1. Hamilton 1.31 (29x1st, 6x2nd, 1x6th)
