Fernando drove his old ride around the track at Abu Dhabi with cameras rolling and the sound of that V10 is glorious . Actually sounds like a real race car . Video is available on the internet and is worth a watch .

They do sound so impressive although a little old fashioned now. All that fuel and noise energy seems a little irrelevant these days.

The noise is brilliant. Oh, how I wish they still sounded like that.

Amazing, the big advantage from these days is you can speak to the person next to you when attending a race and you don’t have a massive headache afterwards.

He did another lap today I think and did a 1:40.5 lap time which is not bad considering that engine is probably running less power than it did in 2005, the car isn't set up for the track and he is still on demo tyres.

If that front wing was a few inches lower, it would generate more downforce too. Such a hideous looking thing.

Having attended races of the V10s, V8s and hybrids - while nothing compares to the spectacle of hearing the V10 go by, for a 90 minute race the turbos make for the best spectator experience for enjoying the race, especially as without the TV feed and limited info, it is usually a group effort with your friends to make sense of the strategies and keep on top of how the race is unfolding.

I agree. I've attended races over the past few decades and never left with a headache. The noise that used to reverberate through your body is sorely missed.

It’s weird to me, thinking that car pre-dates that track. Cool to watch though.

It was a good reminder of how things were, cant forget in '05 at Spa sitting in the grandstands on the main straight by the start line and you can feel the ground vibrating under you at the start when they were all revved up it was mental!

Such a pleasure watching that in HD with surround sound. Is it me or does it look faster than today's cars?

That front wing was so high up and so small because it had to be; less downforce made for much better racing.

It will be weirder in 5 years time when that car pre dates some of the drivers competing in F1. Schumacher's first championship winning Ferrari predates Tsunoda.

Our last trip to Imola in 2006 was closer to Senna’s death than this year’s race. That seemed properly weird to me.

I have to agree as well. As a one-off demo with a single car, the V10s are spectacular (and must sound other-worldly to people who weren't around to experience them at the time) but a full 20+ grid of cars screaming by for 90 minutes gave me a headache and made it impossible to communicate with anyone nearby.

Though I will always remember waking up in a Silverstone campsite on the Friday morning to the sound of F1 cars revving in the garages some distance away, overall the current cars are much better for the spectators in my opinion.

In the future if we ever go full electric even the sound of the hybrids might be sorely missed, Alonso said that even going from the V10's to the V8's was a step down in noise and spectacle and some yearn for the V8's instead of the hybrids.

I've never really missed being able to listen to those engines (of whatever generation) without hearing protection. Even when attending races since the hybrids have been in use, I always wore earplugs. Before 2014, I had to, in order not to lose my job, but even going to the cinema was a challenge.

I found the image of Alonso's Renault on modern tyres a bit strange. Were they really the same size as back in 2005?

I think it's important to note that some of us wishing for screaming V10s back are not wanting races to be unbearably loud. You can have high revving, exciting sounding engines that are suitably silenced to allow for a lack of earplugs. It's about tone. LIke supercars on the road. Some sound far better than others, not because of the volume level but because of the tone.

I've been to nascar races which are LOOOOOOUUUUD (even from the parking lot) but you can't even hear them on TV, so an F1 V10 must be unbearably screaming loud in person.

Even Hamilton loves the sound of Alonso's V10 as he puts the brakes on mid interview

It apparently made him forget about saving the planet for a little while .

You can appreciate something for what it is and still recognize that it's irresponsible to use it. I love my car, but I fully realize that the US model of every individual owning a car is a disaster in just about every way.

The fact that even the drivers and other team members were in awe when the car was doing laps tells you something.

Sound wise, todays cars are a major disappointment
