Drivers from the past choice of number
What are the likely choice of driver number for some of the drivers that have competed in the past?
Re: Drivers from the past choice of number
I think in the past we'd see a lot less of drivers choosing their number for clever marketing reasons (Val77eri Bottas, GR/63, etc.) and more sentimental reasons that are impossible to guess, such as your number from your first karting season, your lucky number, etc.
In short, while I think the thread is interesting, it's very difficult to guess. But I'm curious to see what everyone else comes up with!

What's the GR/63 marketing reason?Exediron wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:35 pmI think in the past we'd see a lot less of drivers choosing their number for clever marketing reasons (Val77eri Bottas, GR/63, etc.) and more sentimental reasons that are impossible to guess, such as your number from your first karting season, your lucky number, etc.

Re: Drivers from the past choice of number
Well we can try guess by the number we associate them with
Schumi always preferred odd numbers if I remember but no idea what he would choose
Mansell probably 5 (red of course)
Senna 12 as he used it his whole lotus and I believe his first Mclaren year
Giles Villeneuve 27
James Hunt 11
Just a few I can think of

It's just that GR and 63 look similar in the right font, so he can combine the two:JN23 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:37 pmWhat's the GR/63 marketing reason?Exediron wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:35 pmI think in the past we'd see a lot less of drivers choosing their number for clever marketing reasons (Val77eri Bottas, GR/63, etc.) and more sentimental reasons that are impossible to guess, such as your number from your first karting season, your lucky number, etc.

Although unlike Bottas, I don't know for sure that he had that intention ahead of time.

Damon Hill had 0 because he took the vacated seat of nigel mansell and prost retiring the following year.
Seb chose 5 as that was the number hhe won his first wdc

Some from when I started watching F1, Prost Piquet, Alesi, Boutsen, Patrese, Warwick, Donnelly, Herbert?

I like Lando's negative space 4:

Lando's LN/4 is very good. As with Russell, I don't know if that was the reason he chose the number or if the logo came after.
With Bottas, we know he chose his number for that reason, since at the time (2014, when the idea of driver numbers was first confirmed) he was talking on social media about how he like the Bo77as possibility.

Re: Drivers from the past choice of number
I do like the new tradition of the number staying with the driver.
Certainly in the US in Nascar one has only to see the #3 or #43 logos to evoke the drivers who made them memorable. I would rather the driver kept the number than the team though.
#44 will be long remembered as the number of Lewis Hamilton.
