Gasly has been so good in qualifying ever since he left Redbull. You contrast that to Albon who has been awful.

And he'll be starting on those chocolate tyres too.

What's the mystery? Albon isn't on Max's level and the RB can be tricky at times as far as I can tell.

Does he? I thought only if you make it to q3 you have to use the tires you used to get there.

Red Bull playing games perhaps, given Albon was on used tyres how important was it to release his car right in front of Hamilton's car nearly causing an incident, perhaps to try and disrupt Hamilton's lap?

My bad, you are correct. Hopefully he doesn't bin it on the first lap and gets a decent strategy this time.

Both mercs didn’t improve on their final laps. Bottas continues to shadow Hamilton in qualifying this year, perhaps a testament of how easy this years merc is to drive. Should be an interesting race with Max and the Mercs. I think the Hulk might have beaten Max today again. So he was sorely missed in my view.

Has Bottas missed an opportunity there with Hamilton not improving on his last lap?

To be fair I think most didn't improve.

Bottas put himself in a good position to snatch pole but his S3 hasn't quite been as sharp as he'd have liked, as he admitted in the post-qualy interview.

edit:

The onboard for Bottas for the first 40 seconds of the lap was ridiculous. That car is utterly immense and Bottas was nailing that portion of the lap. Hamilton could not match it.

To be fair Bottas did improve, just by not quite enough. It's fairly frequently the case that he is equal or faster than Hamilton in the first two sectors and then loses out in the last, and that's not just here.

Albon .737sec. off Max's pace in Q3. RBR won't be able to mount a serious challenge to Merc without a stronger partner to Max.

So who is the next lamb to be sent to the slaughterhouse of Max Verstappen?

This is getting ridiculous.

If RBR are to put themselves into a position to challenge for Championships especially in 2021, they could do with not giving rook odds to Mercedes.

Thing is that he seems to be getting worse and worse; in qualifying he is making Gaslys performance against Max look good. I have no doubt that we are not seeing the best of Albon. Why is the big question.

Vettel seems quiet. But ratehr than bursting out like we know he has done in the past, i think it is better being calm like he is. Although when he does talk these days, it does seem to be in a relaxed tone. You can tell he is annoyed by the words he uses, but in a sort of "I don't care" way if that makes any sense. Usually the messages from last week with his messed up strategy would have an angry tone to them, but they sounded rather casual - again seeming like he can't be bother to kick up much of a fuss knowing he is leaving anyway. I think he is trying as hard as he can with what he's got. But possibly not giving enough feedback any more to get it to how he ideally would want it, although again, I don't think he seems to care. I still belive Vettel has the speed to be in F1 and can bounce back. But I don't think that will be this season.

I'm not sure whether this is the return of Ferrari International Assistance, or just "we are worried about viewing figures and sponsorships".

It is depressing to see artificially introduced mid-season and at very, very short notice - it smells of bias and desperation.

.
Should have been done a few years ago to be honest. Would have made for much crazier starts and races and perhaps closed some of the gaps up.

Oh well, hindsight is a great thing I guess.
Why bother spending the money on the cars just for the FIA to come along midseason and close the performance gaps with rule changes, field spec cars it's a lot cheaper.
That's one for the FIA to answer, I guess. But surely, it must be a reactionary move to dwindling interest in the sport? Still, might be too late to recover lost viewership.
I keep asking what lost viewership?

So if everyone has to run the same engine settings all weekend then RB drivers asking to turn the power up will go as well then! Didn't like the pit tinkering with power levels during the race anyway.
Will it make a big difference?
I guess there's a few ways of looking at this

- Merc (and RP/Williams) lose out most in qualifying as the Merc qualifying mode is seen as the best
- Instead of being on pole by one second, Merc will be on pole by less but still by a long way
- Teams will have to find a balance between qualy performance but race reliability - probably not easy mid-season
- Teams who have more reliable engines will probably be advantaged
It's the reliability implications which worry me most, plus also the fuel efficiency.

Manufacturers designed their engines around a set of rules at the start of the season to manage engine life across races, and also to manage fuel etc... throughout a race. Now they've lost the settings but can't change the physical engine. Seems a little unfair.

Also how short-sighted is this change if it eliminates fuel-saving during safety car periods leading to more dreaded 'lift & coast"?
First priority is to stop Mercedes winning, I don't think they look much beyond that.
I wonder, if that is the FIA's priority is that the cause of Toto Wolff questioning his future with Mercedes? Is the challenge of staying number 1 becoming too much for him I wonder?
It seems to be more about the new Daimler boss?

Latifi could well have started to look reasonable now. Not sure if is related to Russell missing last practice, but Russel didn't sound happy with his car all the previous race and I'll be honest, Latifi's pace certainly did look better. He also commented on how comfortable he was with his car. He's now 2 tenths up of Russell again and Russell is the one not comfortable. Russell has looked great in qualifying many times this year, But I'm not sure if is the car or him, but on race day, he has several times looked a bit underwhelming that I'm not convinced is totally down to the car. Very little to base it on, but I do wonder if Latifi really could be challenging him a little more for the rest of the year. Is Latifi possibly a bit better than we predicted or is it too early to tell?
One practice session after Russell had to sit out the first one.
But he was making the same sort of comments as the previous race which is why I brought it up.
Well when it really mattered Russell beat Latifi by 0.433s.

Viewing figures for many sports are higher than usual because of covid restrictions and people being at home.

I haven't blamed covid for F1 being in a dire state. If you think it's in a good state when both titles are pretty much decided after six races then thats fine but I doubt its in the majority.

Yeah, I think the Hamilton fans need to realise there's 19 other drivers on the grid and not many F1 fans enjoy the constant domination.

I have no idea where to find such graphics to be honest. I think one can inference lower viewership based off reduced forum activity and from my own anecdotal evidence that barely anyone I know watches it anymore.
