Which mod sent the PM? I'll have a look back through the records.

Edit: that would be me.

I fail to see how a driver's tattoos are relevant to his racing. That sort of thing belongs in off-topic.

Ok guys. You've got to settle down. Look at how many threads have been locked the past two weeks. Has there been an out break of irrational anger or what? You guys need to get it together on this forum.

Maybe a tip on what to do can be helpful, I think everyone is aware of the rules but some guidance can be useful for some

I don't suppose there is anything to be gained by blaming McLaren..?

Not so much an outbreak of irrational anger but an influx of posts with rather odd topics that gather all kinds of negative thoughts and in some cases probably deliberate trolling, to which people mistakenly have reacted with somewhat more emotional posts, thus decreasing the quality of posts. A provocative thread will get angry replies, even though those threads are best left alone. Logic doesn't work in this case either.

It's all very well blaming a team for something but when there is thread after thread saying the same thing it gets tiresome. We only need one.

What we don't want to see is blatant bash threads/troll threads and deliberately duplicated threads. All of those will be locked on sight.

If someone wants to start a thread after a race saying "McLaren, what went wrong?", "Did McLaren mess up?", "Are McLaren throwing away the title?" then that is fine. Just don't duplicate it if one already exists, it seems some posters do this simply because they get annoyed someone got there first and that is tough. Also if the thread has a title like "McLaren don't want Hamilton to win", "McLaren are f****** useless", "Whitmarsh only wants to screw over Hamilton because he's leaving" blah blah blah then you can expect us to lock it when we discover it's existence. Sometimes we will change the thread title to something more apt if the thread has somehow managed to fold itself into a meaningful discussion.

I'll second that. Whenever I follow a youtube link from this forum the comments seem to be a more extreme version of some of these threads.

Seems like these days, to some people, it's more important who loses, rather than who wins.

I think all the mods would agree (correct me if I'm wrong) that we figured after all the locking, banning, warning, editing going on that maybe the point would by now get across. I know the "Head Ranger" PF1-MOD has been trying to get the point through in most threads by giving a chance before locking but still users fail to comprehend the rules. Not all users but the number of them appears to be growing by the second.

Howzit guys
I frequent the forum a lot reading and checking for any updates on news etc...however most of the time I come across some really silly threads. When I do however come across a good thread, start reading it...only for it to be ruined by some really immature debates and posts that sprung out from nowhere like a weed thru paving.

I have a small suggestion, which I think may help some posters use there own discretion as whether or nt to be bated by a post debate or thread. I was thinking maybe all profiles shud be required on registration or update to have some compulsory items. Age of person , driver they support(however many it may be) etc, which can be displayed below there name when they post a comment and on there profile . I think this way one would be able to distinguish between an immature poster who of no fault of there own may nt beable to handle a mature argument. I know someone cud always lie about there age but this is a small control that could work. I have nothing against old or young posters nor am I saying that a 13 or 14 year old may nt beable to have a mature convo (you can get some immature adults aswell) but in majority of the cases its true. Maybe others also have some suggestions on how to improve the forum.

I blame the Footie Fan type fanboyism thats invaded British based F1 forums in recent years. I find the 'My team/driver cannot possibly fail without a baseless paranoid fantasy to explain it ' posts so wearing that i read less and less threads now ..

Its a real shame as there was and is a few very knowledgeable members whose info is a joy to read and they are becomming swamped with endless repeating of'94, 2007, schumacher was never any good and other such annoyances

I suggest the top level mods get funding for a much bigger ban hammer

Cheers ears and hasnt it been a cracking season :)

why? people need to stop getting their knickers in a twist when it comes to Hamilton and actually behave like people with their heads screwed on tight...half the threads locked are trollish Hamilton threads.

Instead of locking duplicate threads or similar natured threads. Why can't you just merge the thread. People have differing opinions and they may feel deserves a new thread. Just merge the threads together. Works for other forums. Plus gets rid of the heartache of angry forum posters.

I believe the rules against calling out fanboy/trolls and just putting them in their place may actually be counterproductive, as they confer a kind of artificial equal legitimacy on everyone.

Let's face it, some forumers regularly post completely uninformative and purposefully inflammatory posts, consisting of the same old cheap shots against a particular team/driver, whenever it's even distantly related to the topic and sometimes when it isn't. Having to treat such forumers politely and addressing their "arguments" as if they were legitimate points of view just stretches out the ridiculous arguments that ensue -- it feeds the trolls. I would just allow the 95% of legitimate forumers to have at them when they post their drivel, and if that doesn't shut the troll up, then just ban them.

Could you the mods merge the ongoing Hamilton did this Hamilton did that to the Hamilton thread?
That would probably make it as big as the Kimi thread ;)

I think you could do the same with all "McLaren is dumb" and "I hate Ron or Martin" threads too to their official threads.

The first page is full of these and I might miss out on some interesting topic ;)

Seriously

Considering Guia's avatar-changing issues from a few pages back on September 29th, I'm having even stranger things happening.

I recently changed my avatar, then it was changed into a completely different avatar I don't remember having used on this forum. Since then, it's changed to one and another and one and another countless times, and I'm getting somewhat confused.

Now, I actually like the waterdrop picture, but I'm completely puzzled as to where it came from and why my avatar keeps changing every now and then.

Clear cookies, delete your avatar and upload a new one. Not sure of the correct order of the first 2 points though.

EDIT - One more thing: Shouldn't the McLaren/motives thread also be so merged? Just a thought.

I have a question regarding my avatar.
I keeps changing between the one I selected and 2 of the previous ones I have used. I have tried to remove it and select the one I want again but after a while the older ones show up again? Wassup with that?

It shouldn't do that. Did you clear cookies? Also, if you access the forum on multiple machines you may have to do the same on them all.

Good to see a harder line being taken in moderating.

I mostly avoid the F1 forum just because of the vitriol and petty, repetitive arguments so I hugely appreciate this

Agreed, instead of punishing everyone else. Anyone who goes into a thread just to bash a certain driver/team (its easy to locate them, just look at their posts) should get warned and banned if they continue.

Regarding the Raikkonen thread-
P-F1 Mod wrote:Thanks, guys, I now have to answer questions from parents asking why their children were exposed to pornography, both in the "contract" video, and in the stills posted in this thread.
I agree with your actions with respect to the images, but the video was, and still is being hosted by YouTube which has similar rules to this site, so if anyone got a ban for linking that then I think that that is unfair.

Hi bbobeckyj,

Firstly, thank you for using the right thread!

I wasn't "on duty" when this incident was dealt with but I know that there have been people who just posted the video without apparently realizing what it contained who weren't banned.

However, YouTube does have a notable difference to this forum - members can flag inappropriate videos so they can only be viewed by over-18s. Whether the Kimi video has been flagged or not, I'm not sure, but the option is there. We have no such option so have no choice but to be harsh on matters like this. We don't enjoy it but we really cannot afford to be lenient on pornographic content, no matter how mild it may be. Worryingly, this is not the first incident we've had with such material in the past month or so and we certainly do not want to see a pattern developing.

Mod Purple

9 years here, 9 years reading any kind of nonsense in this forum and my first post an advertising video (Raikkonen) that you can see in Yahoo, Eurosport, Autobild, TF1, Car & Driver and all media in Spain till now (is new) and it gets banned here. You have all the right to ban it and I accept it; but, in this case, I think it was not so offensive.

The 'uber McLaren/Hamilton/Button' thread was a brilliant idea, and seems to be cutting back the number of new, pointless threads that all denigrated to the same OTT posts...

So a big thumbs up for that - it is greatly appreciated.

This is so lame. Another rant, in wrong section with op telling us nothing useful. Use banhammer more, delete more posts etc, but don't turn F1 forum into forum where we discuss moderators problems. I knew some decent forum that unfortunately turned into constant discussion about bans. Don't let this happen with this forum...

I think allot of us are guilty of hyperbly and over the top behavior me included, the problem for me is the Mods are too inflexible and draconian. Most posters come on here to vent ,debate and to be informed.trying posting an article on racial attitudes in F1.and its locked immediately, why not let the debate take place and let all views be heard,This is 2112 not the dark ages where some topics are discus in dark rooms

I think a bigger problem on the forum is that there are quit a poster who never create any post, but who just troll for post to be little, posting stupid sarcastic pictures trying bully and stifle debate

so a better rule would be no posting of sarcastic photos if you not going to make a point and add to the debate

If the mods keep on locking a thread and another pops up in its place, and this keeps on happening, maybe it's a suggestion that locking the thread in the first place was the wrong thing to do?

Mods exist on forums to serve the users, not the other way around. If sufficient users keeps opening threads after the mods lock it, maybe it's time to accept that it's a valid topic for discussion and that you shouldn't lock it?

Hey I don't know if this has been suggested but perhaps the general decline in the forum's quality is due to the fact that anyone can sign up now? Earlier, it used to be that you could join only if you registered through an email address that wasn't from a free email service provider.

Perhaps it's worth switching back to that and enforcing it so we don't let the trolls in as easily?

The problem is that doesn't always keep out the problem members. Looking at some of the accounts I've banned recently, maybe half of those have traditional free accounts, then there are all sorts of paid-for ones there as well. Equally, we would write off best part of a generation of members if we reverted to that rule.
