I am locking this thread while I tidy up the post to put it back on topic.

A few points to consider while I do this:
  • as F1 fans, we the mods are trying to enjoy the race and the post race coverage as well, and having to deal with things in the forum takes time away from our enjoyment of the race weekend. The first comment I made in reply to Altair and TedStriker's exchange was directed at both of them, as it was the startings of an derailing off topic exchange
  • this type of mod interaction is not a formal warning, it's just telling people to mind the discourse they have having
  • sarcasm isn't banned, neither are jokes. This isn't about one ingredient that was wrong, but what it was a recipe for in this particular case

Does anyone have an issue accessing the forum when using 4G? I very often get a page cannot be displayed message or if the page does load it takes a while. Not sure its anything to do with signal as most other websites are fine. Not a major issue but just something I'd noticed.

4G has higher latency (well, a higher standard deviation on its latency), and this forum - thanks to the adverts - has a ton of external script files to load in, so if one of these hangs it can cause pages to load much more slowly. It can start loading in the HTML but if the scripts are deferred (which I don't believe they are) then it will interrupt the processing of the HTML until that script file has been loaded. This means if an advertiser's server is slow, the page will start to load and then stop while it loads in the advertiser's javascript.

However, i assume you are noticing it is more pronounced that other websites?

Yeah, it's basically this forum and another forum I use. Any other websites I use seem to work fine.

This is unfortunately not something that we moderators have powers to change - webforums usually are littered with external files for advertisers and other stuff, and I suspect that it is what is causing your problem. They also do tend to be quite mark up heavy (this template is chock full of tables within tables within tables. Viewing it with the web inspector is a nightmare!

I have added the option to colour rows / cells, but including a colour code inside the tag:

COLUMN 1Column 2.Column 3
R1 C1R1 C2R1 C3
R2 C1R2 C2R2 C3
R3 C1R3 C2R3 C3

Code: Select all

[row=#ff0000] ... row code .. [/row]
[cell=#00ffff] Cell Data [/cell]
Cell colour will override row colour if both are specified.

Sortable Tables!

Click on a column header to sort by it. Click again to reverse the sort order of that column.
DriverTeamCar NumberGridRace
LewisMerc4421
BottasMerc7712
MaxRed Bull3343
SebFerrari534
To do this, just create a table, but change the stand and end [table] tags to [sortabletable] - the first row will be the header rows and not included in the sort - as above.

If all the of the values of a column (excluding header) are a number, or blank (or a single dash -) then these will be treated as a numerical column and sorted according to their number value. All other columns will be sorted alphanumerically (so 33 would appear before 4, if the column contained non number cells)

Has anyone been using the autotrim quote feature?

if so, has it worked correctly every time? Or has anyone experienced any bugs?

Regarding the new "rank the X" style polls, it will take me a little time to code the interface to allow people to make them themselves - but in the meantime, if anyone would like to have a poll of that kind made, PM me the details of the poll and I will set it up for you.

Whilst I appreciate we're now on to another race, does the French GP race thread being locked mean that all discussion regarding that have to cease to exist or do we have to create new thread for each thing? Seem odd to simply close a race thread because another race comes along. Plus. the French race was hardly months ago!

We now lock the race threads on Wednesday as standard. We're not stifling discussion by any means, but usually incidents of interest have split off into their own topics anyway. It prevents confusion, especially with back to back races, where in the past some users have gone to the wrong race thread by mistake. It also ends the race threads when they've usually started to become circular.

Hi Mods,

Not sure if this is the right place to post.

In the messaging system that is on the PlanetF1.com webpage, there are some settings errors.

If you ever go into your account, and look at all the messages you have posted, the links do not work back to the original articles.
eg view in discussion link

The problem is that the link is using https:// vs http://
If I click on a link, it says 'can't establish a secure connection to the server'

If I then manually go up to the address bar and take out the S from https://, it then goes to the correct page.
It seems like it would be a quick settings change to fix all links.
Let me know if you need further clarification on what I mean.
Thanks

Experience tells us otherwise. The vast majority of race threads end up in an endless circle.

Don't normally discuss this sort of thing in-thread, so if you'd like to discuss this further, please take it to the feedback thread.
I do think it probably makes sense to keep relevant discussion of recent races in the appropriate race thread even a number of days post race (especially prior to the next race weekend commencing). Locking the thread means there isn't really anywhere else to discuss it, baring making another thread which might not be appropriate.

However obviously if your experience is that this causes unproductive discussions to drag on that end up necessitating moderation then it is perfectly understandable that you wish to lock them promptly, albeit a bit of a shame that it has to come to that.

It is a shame it comes to it, but it is what it is.

Generally after a few days either the thread is dead or it's two or three posters going back and forth repeating the same arguments, which gets tedious and often escalates and causes complaints.

In this particular instance, I personally feel the new news more than warrants it's own thread. It's about far more than the German GP.

If a thread is going in circles, but those contributing are not breaking rules such as rudeness, then I don't see the problem with keeping them open. If people are bored of the topic, they don't have to visit that particular thread again, do they? Germany's race could keep us entertained for some time.

I completely get that bickering is a pain and needs to be deterred. I also get that you have to follow that thread in detail and regularly to spot abuse, unless its reported.

However, the fact remains the race thread was only open 5 days from start to finish, has to be at least a week doesn't it?

If a discussion is actually occurring sensibly, we do keep the race threads open longer - I think Canada was held open a day longer.

We actually locked this one a day later than usual too, and it hadn't been posted in for over 24 hours, so I think it was totally fair to move things on to Hungary at that point.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Threads that degenerate have to me monitored more closely, all the mods here are volunteers - anything we can do to minimise abuse and reports helps free them up to enjoy the discussion on the forum themselves.

If I may add to what Blue has said, since it was me who acted on this occasion, the other factor that led to the locking of the thread was a post that we filtered out, which would almost certainly have caused a lot of arguments and rendered the thread lockable anyway. We felt it was in everyone's best interests to avoid that, so skipped straight to the endgame.

There was a time on this forum when the mods would let arguments run out of control, and even add to them to get rid of users they didn't like. We take the opposite approach, and from memory we've banned a single user so far this year. Yes, some of our decisions are unpopular. That's partly why this thread exists. But unless this becomes a frequent complaint, we won't be changing the policy for the time being. And by all means, please feel free to keep raising it when you think we're wrong, our policies are always open for review.

I want to add to this that sometimes news come out a few days after the GP. So it is understandable that people will discuss it. If the race thread is locked then they will have to create a new thread, which will always lead to the question of what is preferable, opening countless threads or keeping the one open?

Re: FEEDBACK THREAD

In that case, a new thread is entirely appropriate. And any longer discussions about in-race incidents are worthy of their own thread too a lot of the time, so it's rare we take issue with extra threads. It can be harder keeping track of a race thread, with many events all being discussed, than 3 threads each focusing on just one.

Re: FEEDBACK THREAD

Just seems a shame that official threads about races are not there to discuss the race in the future. Instead, we have to create new threads about things that happened in a race ,and also check in case someone else has created a thread about the things you want to discuss, but given it a title that may now always be clear thus risking multiple threads that will need deleting or merging.

Ho hum.

It's not a perfect solution by any means, we're well aware of that and we didn't want to start locking the race threads when we did it, partly for that reason.

I agree with Siao's comment, stuff does come out in comments on the Mon, Tue after the race. Also if you have been away on the race weekend catchup occurs early in the week. Lock threads of course if they are getting stupid but I really think Wed locking of the Race thread as a matter of course is too early.
