Looks like only one mod has been online recently. No wonder the quality of posts has been allowed to deteriorate recently.

Wonder what the contingency is? You are right though, looks like only Mod Aqua and PF1-Mod have been on this year! And the main man is still MIA.

It's unlike PF1-Mod to be away for so long, I'm only a junior mod so I'm limited in what I can do but I will try and get in touch with the forum administrators to see what can be done.

Remember, the Mods are unpaid volunteers, so it's only natural that real life will take priority. I've been studying a full time degree for the last two years, entering my final year now, so my time on the forum has been very very sporadic as a result.

I don't have the authority to create new mods, however I will request that we recruit some more when I get in touch with the admins. So, if anyone is interested in being a mod, PM me, so if that is approved I have a list of volunteers ready. (And note, even if my request does get approved, that won't mean every volunteer would be made a mod)

He said he was having internet trouble in one of his last posts, i'd imagine that's probably the root cause.

Would it be possible for the forum to acquire a "BEATING A DEAD HORSE" smilies thingy?

Is this the place to ask this question?

Seems to be an awful lot of that going on........

Unfortunately at the moment, it's not possible to make any technical changes to the forum while PF1 Mod is away.

I think the search function is a bit whack. I can't search for the "official Ferrari thread" because the terms are too common!

I was getting it around midday on my phone, HTTP ERROR 500. It was pretty relentless too.

To be honest, there isn't really all that many of us left lol. Dolomite's thread on predicted wins has a lot of old names in it that are long banned.... perhaps after this season is done an amnesty for old misbehaving users could be considered?
Seconded. Especially the ones banned during the rule of a certain tyrant...
Did that way back in 2011. People like Tufty, Fiki, and a good few others wouldn't be members now otherwise.

A lot of people dipped back in and left again, sadly.

We can chase it up but I'd rather make the 500 errors priority for the moment.

While looking around in the admin section to see if I could see anything that could be affecting the error 500, I noticed the place to add BBcode, so I updated the youtube embed to bring it more up to date, but also added the option for Instagram embedding. Just stick the post id number inbetween the tags, for example:

I've had a little play with the search thing on the back of this... and as far as I can tell, its a misleading error message that's thrown when the search query throws up too many results (no idea what that arbitrary limit would be). Even searching for 'Hamilton' (not a common word by any stretch outside of an F1 or Scotland forum <_<) throws up the same thing. It's a bit of a breaker for the search function.

Maybe the limit of search results could be raised?

When I'm next on a more compliant device than my phone, I'll have a look at that.

Have added the a tag for embedding Facebook Videos:
To use, take the part of the url after http://www.facebook.com/ as seen below:

Code: Select all

[fbvid]skysportsf1/videos/1529922573767366/[/fbvid]
Note, this one required a little bit more hackery than Instagram / Twitter / YouTube so it may have some bugs I haven't antipicated. I don't think that's the case, and it won't break the forum, it may just cause the Facebook player not to function or load when multiple videos are on the page. If you come across any bugs, post in here or PM me directly.

Nice, but I just tried this video and it doesn't work, so it looks like pages can turn off video embedding if they want:

Interesting, the YouTube version of that video does embed, so I guess that either YouTube have stopped allowing creators to stop embeds, or FOM's YouTube team isn't as hot on their settings as their Facebook team is:

Either way, there's not a lot I can do about it as there is no server side checking of the embeds, it just sticks the URL into a template and gets generated client side by Javascript. If people preview the message it will show that it's been blocked from embedding, and the "can't be embedded" message gives a link to the video on Facebook anyway.

Just to update you all, we're awaiting a server migration for this forum and others in the same family which will apparently come in the off-season. This is meant to stop the error 500 problem, so hopefully it works.

Sorry it's not something more immediate, but this is progress.

Without a post updating the Schumacher injury thread in over a year now, is it now time to let it drop down the pages?

I can't see any relevance in that thread currently (which is a sad shame)

Good point, sorry I'd completely forgotten about that thread! Unstickying now. I agree it's a shame, but equally I'm glad privacy is being respected, whatever the situation is.

Mods, you do realise that the term for illegitimate offspring beginning with "b" and ending in "ard" is perfectly good English, don't you? Why replace it with "lovely individual?" isn't that overreacting a tad?!

We're very much aware of it. However, after it was included among the raft of reports we had when we decided adults are capable of swearing without censorship, we elected to put it back under the filter.

To clarify, when I say 'we', I don't refer to most of the current active mods. We are currently reviewing a few aspects of the forum and we hope some changes will be visible soon.

As for the 500 error, I'll report it again. Hopefully it stays away for the last race.

Blank pages today are the worst they have been for me since the bad old days.... a good 6 hour stint now where even logging in is an issue, let alone browsing the forum.

Seems this server migration can't come soon enough ;_;

503 errors are also now a thing - I figured some of you might enjoy the variety. I apologise in advance if anyone else gets these or more 500/white screen issues.

Are there any plans to modernize the forum a bit? Great community on here, would be nice if the official PlanetF1 forum was more up to date.

Modernised in what way? phpBB is pretty standard fare when it comes to the forum itself, anything in particular you were thinking of? I've had a go at doing stylesheets for the forum before using Stylish but that's been updated recently and broken most of the things I did, not that any of it was finished anyway.
