Planet F1 Forum Rules and Guidelines

Greetings, and welcome to the Planet-F1 forum.

Before signing up, it is important to familiarise yourself with the forum rules below. Once you have signed up, your first posts will require moderator approval, to ensure your account is legitimate and not a spambot. If you are still requiring post approval after making your first post, please post a reply in this thread requesting the post approval to be lifted and a moderator will deal with it as soon as they can. Please be aware that you must email pf1modteam@gmail.com to get your account activated.

Also, once you have signed up, you may want to introduce yourself in the New Member Introduction thread.

The following is a list of rules that, as an account holder on the forum, you are expected to adhere to at all times.

Latest updates to the rules are highlighted like this

1. General Rules

  • 1.1 - Respectful behaviour to other users: Any attempt to undermine, bully or insult other forum members will not be tolerated. It's natural that you will disagree, it's a competitive sport, but if you can't put your differences aside with someone, then stop engaging with them. If you can't ignore their posts, then there is the option to block their posts from appearing for you.

If you refer to another poster in the comments, then you are expected to refer to them by their username. Using insulting terms, pejoratives or other ways that diminish them is not allowed. This includes referring to them using terms such as "that poster"

Finally, if you do block someone, this is to remain private and you are not to mention on the board that you have done so, either directly or by implication.
  • 1.2 - Accusations of Trolling / Flaming / Fanboyism / Hating / Bias etc...: It is against the rules to accuse other forum members with pejorative terms, such as being a troll, trolling behavior, flaming, being a fanboy, being a 'hater' or other similar terminology. As context is important, and online language quickly evolves, an exhaustive list of terminology cannot be provided.

Similarly, accusing forum members of negative or malicious behavior, such as lying, inciting, antagonising, etc... is also forbidden.

This also includes unsubstantiated accusations of bias, or other ad hominem blanket attacks aimed at dismissing a poster's ability to debate fairly.

When offering an opposing point of view, your argument should target the post and not the poster. While it is not against the rules to refer to previous posts a user may have made when countering a position, these should be ones made recently and in most cases, from the same thread.

It is also against the rules to accuse, even in jest, another forum member of being a moderator. The identity of the forum moderators is confidential for a good reason (see below) and a false accusation could lead to that forum member being harassed as a consequence of the accusation and unable to continue a discussion within the thread.

If you feel someone is behaving in a negative way, the correct procedure is to report the offending posts.
  • 1.3 - Offensive Posting: Members of this forum are prohibited from posting anything that be found to be patently offensive in nature. This includes, but is not limited to any kind of racism, predjudice based on religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation, disability, nationality or gender. Sexually explicit comments are also prohibited, as is the posting of any pornographic, violent or other NSFW material.
  • 1.4 - Trolling: Posting on the forum to deliberately incite or provoke people is not allowed. While we do not ban posting an opinion, no matter how controversial (so long as it is doesn't break any other forum rules), posting something simply to antagonise or stir up other people will not be tolerated. For this reason, while you are free to criticise drivers, team principals, pundits etc... simply calling them names or labelling them with an insulting term is not permitted.
  • 1.5 - Images: All images posted need a link to the source of the image placed underneath them in the post. Any images posted without a source will be removed. In most cases, posting 'GIF reactions' or memes are prohibited - see the etiquette section below for more details.
  • 1.6 - Abusive Posting: Members of this forum are prohibited from posting anything that could be deemed to be directly abusive to any other member of the forum, or member of the public - famous or otherwise. This includes any kind of harrassment, stalking or otherwise continually attempting to create a hostile environment for any other member of the forum.
  • 1.7 - The Moderators: The moderation team are all volunteer members of the community, doing it in their free time. Therefore abusing any of the moderation staff is strictly not tolerated. Wasting their time by repeatedly reporting posts that clearly do not break the rules will also be dealt with harshly. If you disagree with a decision made by a moderator, do not respond in the thread - instead bring it up in the Feedback Thread. Any posts by the 'PF1 Mod Team' account represent the Moderation Team's final decision on matters.
  • 1.8 - Swearing: Members of this forum should refrain from using bad language on the forum. There is a built in swear word filter, that automatically changes most swear words into less harmful (and occasionally nonsensical) alternatives. Attempts to circumvent this filter will always be removed and generally result in further moderation.
  • 1.9 - Advertising: Accounts created solely to advertise services/other websites on this forum will be terminated immediately. If you are an active member of the forum, and wish to advertise any of your own content, a link in your signature should suffice. If you feel the need to create a dedicated topic for any content that you are trying to advertise, please attempt to contact one of the forum moderators first, so that we can gauge whether or not we would deem it acceptable.
  • 1.10 - Illegal Activities: Anybody posting, illiciting, or encouraging people to post anything that would break any laws in any country is prohibited. This includes the posting, or asking for links to illegal streams of any content, or providing people with advice or the means to view such content. Anyone found breaking this rule will find themselves subject to the harshest punishment. Posting anything potentially libelous also falls under this rule, and attempting to hide anything of this kind behind the banner of 'fan fiction' to create ambiguity is also not allowed.
  • 1.11 - Multiple Accounts: Creating or attempting to use multiple accounts on the forum is strictly prohibited. Anyone found to be engaging in the use of multiple accounts is likely to have all of their accounts permanently banned.
  • 1.12 - Age of Registration: Members have to be at least 16 years of age to register an account on these forums. Anyone found to be underage will have their account banned.
  • 1.13 - Disruptive Behavior: Forum Members who regularly engage in disruptive behavior not covered by the rules will be contacted by the moderation team and instructed to cease. If they do not heed that instruction, and a majority of the moderators agree that the severity warrants it, further sanctions - including a suspension - may be given. It is impossible to cover and predict every since possible way someone may seek to cause disruption in the rules, but equally, it's important that a moderator does not have the power to punish anyone unilaterally. That is why a majority of the moderators must agree that a user is deliberately being problematic - and this clause will be used as a last resort.
  • 1.14 - Sources: When posting news or citing rumors it is important to list your sources with a link.

If you want to quote from an article, make sure you use no more than 3 paragraphs. Do not under any circumstances post an article in its entirety.
  • 1.15 - Derailing: Off-topic posting that has the effect of derailing a discussion thread is against the rules, and may result in moderator action if it is repeated or judged to be deliberate.

The moderator team will sometimes split an off-topic discussion and create a new thread to continue discussion of that topic. If such a split has occurred, continuing the new discussion in the old thread is also against the rules.
2. General Ettiquette

2.1 - The following sections are not strict rules, but rather guidelines for positive posting habits.
  • 2.1.1 When starting a new thread, or adding new factual or rumoured information to a thread, we strongly encourage your to cite a credible source. While this is not always a mandatory requirement, it is good practice and will help lend credibility to your post. Remember, not everyone follows the name news sources as you do.
  • 2.1.2 Threads with clickbaity thread titles that have little or no value are likely to get locked or have their thread titles changed.
  • 2.1.3 Use of term 'Official' in thread titles:
  • 2.1.3.1 - Each race weekend will have two official threads "[YEAR] [NAME] Free Practice & Qualifying Thread" and a "[YEAR] [NAME] Race Thread"
  • 2.1.3.2 - Breaking news threads should not be described as 'Official' unless press releases from teams and/or drivers have actually confirmed the news.
  • 2.1.3.3 - Drivers and Teams have official threads.
  • 2.1.3.4 - There are also Official Threads for various topics
A list of most of the official threads for drivers and topics can be found here: http://forum.planet-f1.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1776

If you create an official thread for a driver/ team / topic not in the official officials thread, PM a Mod and they can add it to the list.

Note - Driver Official threads are considered places for news updates, or supporters to talk about their driver and as such any criticism should be constructive in nature. Criticism designed just to insult or ridicule a driver will be removed by the moderation team, including any attempts to try and dress such a post up as 'constructive'
  • 2.1.4 - Remember that as a text based form of communication it is not possible to judge tone. Also, this forum has people from all over the world, many of whom English is not their first language. Keep it in mind both when phrasing your responses but also reading what others have written. It's possible that sentence you read that outraged you was meant in a completely different way.
  • 2.1.5 - GIF or Meme responses are generally not appropriate, as this is a discussion forum rather than a chat room, and inappropriate usage will be removed by the moderators, and warnings given if the usage contravenes additional rules. Use your judgement - we don't want to discourage people having fun, so if the post is a well timed joke and meant SOLELY in good humour, then it's probably ok, but if it has any intention of trying to provoke someone or get under their skin, then we will not hesitate to remove it. Not to mention, that a GIFs add sizeable data to people's bandwidth.
  • 2.1.6 - If a topic already exists that covers an issue that you are wanting to start a new topic for, its good practice to utilise the topic that already exists. Repeatedly creating new topics when others already exist that deal with the same subject is likely to land you in hot water with the moderation team
  • 2.1.7 - If a topic has been locked/deleted by the moderation team, it will be because it has been deemed to have broken the forum rules. Attempting to repost the same topic after it has already been dealt with will be viewed in a very dim light, please don't do it.
  • 2.1.8 - Making a new topic to query/complain about a different one being locked/deleted is prohibited. Any complaints/queries should be directed to the feedback topic, which can be viewed by clicking this link: http://forum.planet-f1.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16.
  • 2.1.9 - If you feel the a post on the forum has broken any rules, please report it immediately. It's also good practice not to quote any potentially offending posts whilst replying to them, because this increases the workload for the moderators exponentially as more and more people quote the offending post.
  • 2.1.10 - It's good practice to keep an eye on your Personal Message Inbox. Moderators will message you from time to time, and when they do the message tends to be important.
2.2 - Starting a new thread

The following is a list of guidelines regarding the starting of new threads:
  • 2.2.1 - When starting a new thread it is important to check that an existing thread does not exist on the matter. It is expected that you will at the very least check the first two pages of the forum to make sure an obvious example of your subject matter does not exist. There is also a search function that you can use for more general subject matters.
  • 2.2.2 - Threads that duplicate a subject matter will be closed or merged with the original
  • 2.2.3 - New Threads should make a worthwhile contribution to the forum. In most cases, we will accept nearly all threads (provided they are are on topic for the section of the forum that they are in) - however reactionary threads are discouraged an liable to be closed. These are threads that are either a strong reaction to an incident or are designed to provoke people on a particular incident. This is not to say you cannot post on controversial subject matters (in fact, we encourage this, controversy often creates the best discussion) but just make sure that the purpose is to provoke discussion, not to provoke other forum members.
  • 2.2.4 - The poster who starts a thread is referred to as the "OP" (Original Poster) - in most instances being the OP entitles no additional benefits with regards to the discussion - however the mods may request their insight on clarifying the objective of a thread when it comes to whether the discussion is off topic or not. However, the moderators decision will always be final.
  • 2.2.5 - OPs have the right to request a thread be closed, however this will not automatically result in a thread being closed. If a thread has run its course, or deviated from the original subject matter the thread may be closed. However, threads that have a healthy, on topic discussion are unlikely to be closed.
  • 2.2.6 - OPs do not own the topics or threads they start, and other than what is mentioned above, makes no difference to the user's status in a thread. They are required to adhere by the same rules as everyone else participating in the discussion.

2.3 - Thread specific rules

Some threads may carry specific rules, these will usually be found in the first post in the thread (usually if the thread was started by a moderator)

In some circumstances, the moderation team may impose stricter rules on threads retrospectively by adding a post explaining them. Anything posted after that post must adhere to the stricter rules. The posts will have the font styled in bright red and bold to draw attention to them.

These will be reserved for posts covering more sensitive topics and will mandate some of the guidelines covered in the General Ettiquette section of the rules.

2.4 - Poll Threads / Debate threads
Poll threads, or threads started to debate a particular issue for which there are two or more distinct positions, should be presented in a neutral style. This includes the title, the text of the opening post and - if the thread contains a poll - all elements of the poll including the title, the poll options and ordering/prominence of the poll options

If the OP has their own position on the topic this should not be included or alluded to or otherwise implied in the opening post, and the OP should give other posters a reasonable opportunity to respond first before adding their own point of view.

Posts that are clearly meant as a satire, or parody may be exempt from these guidelines, but this is entirely down to the moderators' discretion and this cannot be used as a bandaid to try and "get through" an obviously partisan thread.

3. Miscellaneous Rules
  • 3.1 - As a hard rule, posting any of 'those' photos of Flavio Briatore or Christian Horner - or screenshots or pictures of Bottas's sauna scene from Drive to Survive Season 3 - will result in a straight ban. We've all seen them once, we don't need to see them again.
  • 3.2 - While we strongly encourage the citation of sources from the internet, some websites are not permitted as sources due to their lack of credibility or copyright violations. The websites currently prohibited are:
  • 3.2.1 - thejudge13.com
  • 3.2.2 - F1Reader.com
  • 3.3 - Top Gear, and anything related to the BBC show is not considered a motorsport related topic, and thus, any topics about Top Gear should be made in the Off Topic section of the forum.
  • 3.4 - Changing your username. You may request that your username be changed. The Moderators will usually accomodate this, but reserve the right to refuse.

Refusal will be given to any inappropriate usernames, but the team may also refuse if a user has a record of disruptive posting / history of breaking the rules.

It is a requirement that upon changing your username that your signature contained the phrase "Formerly OLD_USERNAME (Changed on DATE)" for at least 6 months so other users are aware of the change and that they are debating with the same person.

4. During the Race Itself
  • 4.1 - During the time of the broadcast of any of the races (this is typically counted from 2 hours before lights out, to 2 hours after the chequered flag) any and all rule violations, regardless of how small, will result in a straight 6 hour suspension from the forum to allow us to review the incident later, after the post race coverage has finished. This will not be counted as a ban on your record, unless further action is taken later. The moderation staff here are volunteers, and are first and foremost F1 fans themselves, and would like to watch the race without having to deal with the distraction of any trouble on the forum.
5. Punishments for Rule Breaking

The punishments for breaking the rules on this forum include, but are not restricted to:
  • 5.1 - Informal Warning: Usually by PM, generally a quick reminder of the rules that isn't recorded against your name
  • 5.2 - Formal Warning: Usually by PM, an official warning for breaking the rules. These are recorded against your name, and multiple warnings can mean further sanctions on your account
  • 5.3 - Timed Ban: Starting at 6 hours, for up to a week. These are also recorded against your name, and multiple timed bans will almost certainly result in further sanctions on your account
  • 5.4 - Permanent Ban: For the most serious of transgressions. Permanent also means permanent.
If you wish to further discuss any ban, you must email P-F1 Mod at pf1modteam@gmail.com

6 - Moderators

The Moderation Team are comprised of forum members who volunteer their time to take care of the board, settle disputes, make sure threads stay on topic and adhere to the rules.

Since the retirement of long term head mod "P-F1 Mod" at the start of 2021, the moderation team restructured so there is no single head mod, and that any major decisions would be taken at a group level, democratically, with a majority vote.

The moderator identities are confidential to prevent abuse and harassment of the moderation team, and also so the team can engage fairly in conversation (for both the mods and the non mods)

It is against the rules to speculate about the moderator identities, or to accuse anyone of being a moderator. Any accusations (whether correct or not) carry a zero tolerance, minimum 2 week suspension. A repeat offence will be a permanent ban. This is to protect forum users from false accusations, but also to allow the moderators to continue to participate in the forum. The 'outing' of a moderator would diminish their ability to participate in discussions, which would be unfair given they have volunteered a non trivial amount of time.

Any speculation of moderator identities will be ignored and not commented upon under any circumstances.

Moderators will refrain from moderating disputes they are personally involved in and recuse the moderation of any disputes to a disinterested moderator instead.

Records are maintained of moderator activity, and moderators are expected to maintain reports on any major incidents. These reports are also confidential, but the site owners are able to see them in the event of a dispute between the moderators and forum members.

New Moderators will be recruited as mods step down or take sabbaticals. Recruitment processes will be prominently advertised in the forum and will be open to anyone to apply. The existing moderators will make a decision on who to accept, selecting members who both have a positive record on the forum, but also diversify the spectrum of views, nations, and timezones covered by the team.

Upon retirement, moderators will lose access to their moderator account and forum privileges - however, they may be consulted about ongoing issues / previous cases they dealt with for up to one year after retirement.

If there is a dispute with a specific moderator, then the course of action is - if it is minor, take it to the feedback thread, or if it is serious, message one of the other moderators, marking the subject of the email as CONFIDENTIAL.

If there is a dispute with the moderation team as a whole that you feel cannot be addressed through these channels, then you should seek to contact the site owners of Planet F1.com, using whatever is the most up to date contact information listed on the main site.

Updated the rules to clarify the rules covering the Moderation Team, and clarified the long established rule about not outing moderators (this has always been a rule, and was effectively covered by our rules, but was not explicitly stated, and this was brought to our attention.

It also seemed logical to include a section covering the moderation team in general, about the rules they are expected to adhere to (a bit like a code of conduct)

Also added a section on general 'disruptive behavior'

Maybe I'm being obtuse, but attempting to noodle back to the Forum Rules and discerning the salient differences seems a bit onerous.

I'm not asking for a literal "diffmark", but perhaps a bit of extra context (or at least a link) would be more effective in getting the point across to those us us who (like me) care. ;-0

Our rules are already quite lengthy - we did originally try to cut them down 4 years ago when this new rules thread was created - but this basically invited behaviour that had always been against the rules, and was only implicitly but not directly referred to in the updated ruleself, to occur again. Not to mention some (now retired) forum members who would play to the letter rather than spirit of the rules in an attempt to deliberately antagonise.

As a result, our rules - much like Formula 1's - are not going be explicitly defined with red lines, because all that precise laws do is to tell criminals how to legally commit crimes.

We are ultimately of the opinion that a well intentioned poster should not need to read the rules. We do accept that sometimes it is possible to stray across the line without realising (even by someone well versed in the rules) and that ultimately the intention of the poster is the most important factor. Generally speaking, if someone does make a mistake they will just be informed by the moderation team that it was over the line, and usually we never need to talk to them again.

Beyond all the obvious stuff like inappropriate posting / illegal posting / bullying, the general rules of thumb is to engage with people civilly, to post with a purpose of furthering the debate rather than provoke someone (ie, engage the post, not the poster) and remember that ultimately people come to a Formula 1 forum because they are passionate about Formula 1 and want to talk to other fans who share that passion.

Sure, debates with strong difference of opinions will occur, and these will risk getting heated as people are passionate about their opinion. So long as these don't descend into circular discussions, or pedantic back and forths between two users, become personal, and stay on topic, then that should be fine.

That being said, if there is something you want clarified, feel free to message us and ask directly. But, in short, just be nice and remember that the people who want to be here are genuine F1 fans - from a wide range of (although predominently English speaking) backgrounds.

Perfectly fair. I have an old saying: "Laws are society's common sense, written down for those too dumb to realize them by themselves."

Still not sure exactly what changed, but I think I'll be fine... ;-0

There is a post count threshold that enables topic creation. It's an anti-spam thing. Don't worry, it's not very high.
