Renault and Mclaren battles

I didn’t know which thread to put this in so started a new one. I feel that Norris vs Sainz and Ricciardo vs Ocon will have far reaching consequences for the future. It will be interesting to follow. What if Norris comfortable beats Sainz, what will Ferrari do?

I have a feeling that Norris is going to have a second season jump in performance that is so common, he could really take some shine off of Sainz this year. Ricciardo could finish Ocons career or Ocon could earn a Mercedes.. then for 2020 we have Ricciardo vs a Norris that will be well at home at a Mclaren with 2 seasons under his belt.

An interesting dynamic among these 4 as well as the team battle between them with the same engine.

Depending on what exactly they want from Sainz, that may not be a problem at all.

I think Sainz has proven himself to be quick enough and consistent enough to collect steady points in a good car, so if Norris beats him comfortably I think that just establishes Norris as a probable top tier driver -- which isn't what Ferrari is most likely looking for to partner Leclerc.

I think Ferrari would have been well aware that there was a decent chance Sainz would be bested by Norris this season. Given the job they want him to do I don't think it's a big problem.

I agree with you on Ocon but fear even if he is as good as Ricciardo it might take hi at least half the season to get up to speed.

I really like Norris for a couple of reasons. He is very honest and transparent about his driving, he was happy to discuss the errors he made last week but he just seems to record them and they seem to have no effect obn his driving shortly afterwards.

He has a racing instinct. He took onboard a wealth of changing information over the radio on the last lap and as soon as he realised the Perez and Hamilton penalties he went fir that blazing last lap.

OK so thats just what good drivers should do but what I really liked was he took the car and had the ability to wring 110% out of it to get within the 5 seconds.

I really hope he kicks on, he doesn't need to move in my mind McLaren under Seidl will be up there with the others.

A bit of luck and a bit of reliability making the difference - I think the McLaren and Renault very well matched to date this season

I think all four are top drivers in F1. I'm starting to think Ocon should give up on the Mercedes dream and hedge his bets with Renault. He's the best French driver out there, and Ocon will obviously be racing for a lot longer than Alonso. As long as he keeps tabs on Ricciardo and Alonso, he could have his chance with Renault yet, but will have to wait a very long time. With Bottas signing for another season it seems, and Russell showing tremendous talent, I can't see Ocon being offered a Merc drive.

I see a similar story with Norris. He's likely to play second fiddle for the next couple of years, and I can't see him shifting to another team in the next few years unless he outclasses Ricciardo.

Better than Leclerc? I doubt it.

I don't think they can do anything. He's signed a contract. Norris is on a contract at McLaren too, so nothing will change there. Sainz has already proved himself to be a solid and consistent driver so I don't think Norris beating him will do much except lift Norris' value.

As for Ricciardo and Ocon. This will be interesting. Ricciardo was comfortably faster at Austria GP 1, while Ocon put in a good performance in wet quali the weekend after. But it is only one session.

I think Ricciardo will be comfortably ahead of Ocon over the season personally.

Ricciardo seems to have made a great move for next year with McLaren (and Mercedes engines). I think he will want to beat Ocon for sure, but there's not many consequences if he doesn't.

Isn't Leclerc registered as Monegasque? Besides Ocon, Gasly and Grosjean are the other French drivers on the grid.
