Goes to show the value of Ron Dennis all those years. People might not like him, but that man knew how to run his business and he did a better job with the team and the brand in general than anyone has been able to, at least to this point.

My question is, how on earth could they have offered Ricciardo a decent contract given their current status forcing them to lay off 1200 workers.

One should take all of those numbers with a huge grain of salt. It's rare that F1 driver salaries are ever known for certain, but I doubt Ricciardo's Renault salary was quite that high, and I similarly think Vettel's is nowhere near $68m. It was rumored to be $50m in his first season with all his bonuses activated.

We know that the money is seen as partly to the drivers in how they are valued in relation to their peers and for Vettel that had to be a big vote of no confidence for him, in respect to Hamilton I would expect him to be offered a pay cut in respect to the current economic climate and the second and third highest paid drivers got offered massive pay cuts.

I had in mind that Hamilton will be offered $30M, a 42% pay cut but still not as dramatic as his immediate peers and still $12m clear of the next best paid driver Verstappen.
