New 2020 calendar

I thought I’d make a new thread as I think that’s better than using the coronavirus discussion thread.

Just seen this article about plans for the revised calendar: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/2020 ... ssion=true

Obviously there is doubt about the season starting in July and there’s a suggestion of races on five consecutive weekends in September/October. Whilst this would be fun for us watching, it would be hard work for the teams. I don’t see it happening from a logistical point of view.

Dont we also have the ongoing battle with silverstone and liberty in relation to liberty's compensation to silverstone. Silverstone want 15 million. If that's per race. (Silverstone earmarked as a double event) or if it is total compensation. Liberty font want to be compensating that much and the races at silverstone are up in the air.

These races are still in doubt though because the 14 day quarantine period for people entering the country are still in place. They are trying to negotiate an exemption, presumably in exchange for testing.

Yep, there's also the issue in quarantine rules in other countries. Although I did read somewhere that Germany are aiming for EU-wide travel by July which will help things a bit.

sports leagues across the globe are trying to gear up and get going. the big question still hasn't been answered. what happens if a ferrari or any team member tests positive ? no ferrari for two weeks, or 6 days into quarantine another team member tests positive, so now they are out for 20 days ?

i saw that a lower division german football team had a positive test, the team is quarantined for two weeks. how will this work at higher levels...forfeit's ?

Regarding German football: because they are restarting their season earlier they have a bit more time to get postponements fitted in before they need to finish the season. Leagues in countries such as England might not have this leeway if a player tests positive. If the Premier League restarts in mid-June and there’s an outbreak within a squad, I can see that ending the season.

Your initial question relating to what happens in F1, it would be good to hear Liberty’s answer on that. There were reports a couple of weeks ago that one positive test wouldn’t see the season suspended again, but what if it’s a driver who catches it I wonder? Bit harsh if driver A misses out on the title by 10 points but had to miss a couple of races to quarantine themselves.

Also being reported on Motorsport.com now: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/silv ... ssion=true

The quarantine restrictions will be reviewed every three weeks so things might change yet but doesn’t look good for the July start.

It really depends on the criteria for quarantining. If they are having to go into government allocated hotels upon arrival then it will be very difficult - but if it's quarantining on site then maybe there can be flexibility if they were to remain on site at Silverstone. They could even remain individually isolated for 10 days (Monday to Thursday)

Worst comes to the worst, they could always run the first race on a Wednesday, or even bring Austria 2 forwards to a Saturday to give them more time to go through quarantining in the UK.

Given the UK government's rather nonchalant attitude to COVID19 to date, I don't see a full 2 week quarantine system for arrivals lasting longer than 6 weeks anyway. Certainly not to low risk EU countries.

the US grand prix is five months away but according to this article - https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/us-g ... l/4794921/ - the chances of it happening don't seem great at the moment.

I think it's possible that no races in the Americas take place this year. Perhaps they could be replaced by second races elsewhere if needed, perhaps Abu Dhabi or another opportunity for Hockenheim to get on the calendar.

Doesn’t look good for the British GPs at the end of July, Hungary now also an option to replace those races https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/hung ... ssion=true

I find it completely bizarre that the UK government have decided to introduce this as the rest of Europe has started to reopen.

Cant see Silverstone happening at all. Will be a nightmare exempting F1 whilst fining Joe average £1,000 if they don't isolate for 14days

So quarantine confirmed with no exemption, will be reviewed every three weeks with first review at end of June. Silverstone still hopeful of hosting the British GP, even if that means not on the dates initially planned.

This sounds like good news for the two British GPs taking place on the dates planned. The PM has reportedly (according to The Times, but behind paywall) told cabinet ministers to 'make F1 happen'.

It would be ridiculous for the British grand prix to be behind a pay wall if it goes ahead. Because of the circumstances, far less people will be willing to pay for it. And the main reason, both last year and at the beginning of this year, Sky gave Channel 4 the rights to show the British grand prix live. Now I can understand if channel 4 don't broadcast it because there are already some british broadcasters there and it just makes more than is needed, but for more reasons than before, it should be free to air. Nobody can go to the pub or their friends and watch it....

If paying is the only way to watch it live, then Sky will just continue to get me more and more annoyed. F1 is suffering bad enough at the moment. There is no point charging for your own countries race as you will only end up loosing more viewers that way.

We now have the bizarre situation where Spain are now telling everyone they are open from 1st July whilst the British FCO are advising against all international travel

Spain and Portugal are both trying to attract races behind closed doors, I'm now very confident there will be a 2020 season

All professional sport can now go ahead behind closed doors in the UK, as long as certain criteria are met.

What hasn't changed (yet) though, is that from the 8th June, all arrivals into the UK need to quarantine for 14 days. That is still a barrier that needs to be dealt with in order for the British GPs to go ahead.

2 times around the A1-RedBull Ring and then straight to Hungary. Max has a great chance to be leading the championship after those three rounds.

The reports suggest (linked in this thread) that this won't be an issue.

You know what, I just saw this on racefans and was about to come here and quote that paragraph. That will be great if they can do this. They may hope to do this race, but I've still got a feeling it may not happen. Especially if reducing the lockdown rules doesn't go well.

Possibility that one of the Austria and one of the Silverstone races will replace qualifying with a reverse grid sprint race on Saturday to set the grid for Sunday’s race. Cars will be reverse championship order.

Teams were supportive but a final vote will take place this week.

https://the-race.com/formula-1/f1-aims- ... 0-openers/

I am opposed to the idea as I like qualifying and don’t think that needs fixing (other than the Q2 tyre rule) but if F1 is going to experiment, it’ll probably never get a better chance than this season.

Merc are against the idea and is therefore unlikely to come to anything as the teams need to be unaminous.

By my reckonning that's 8 races in 10 weeks. Okay all are Europe so travelling will be less than normal, but surely it's a lot for mechanics and logistics staff to manage. Are the number of mechanics per car in the garage going to be limited? I think teams use at least 16 now for pitstops. How will that work?

Not surprising because it's a rule that's going to handicap the best team, it seems like as soon as they have one foot through the door, balance of perfomance with wind tunnel time to penalise the best teams, then we have this, if they're so desperate to go so far away from what F1 has always been about in order to equalise performance and have random results, then just be done with it all and have spec cars, it's far cheaper as well.
