Vettel confirmed today that there was never a contract and he was surprised to get the call from Binotto saying so.

Hmm let's see here:
- Slower than team mate for much of the year
- Multiple unforced errors
- Ignoring team orders
- Crashing into team mate and eliminating both cars from a race
- Astronomical salary

Yes Seb, the lack of a contract offer is quite the mystery...

I think Baku 2017 was the turning point. He threw away his composure. After that the pressure and mistakes cost them driver and team dearly. It's a shame Vettel could not pull one championship out of the bag at Ferrari just to cement his status as a top F1 driver and not just the beneficiary of a dominant RedBull car in the early 2010s.

So he was fired then. Props to Seb for just saying it.

Well it was neither was it?

His employment contract came to an end & a new one wasn't negotiated. That's it.

To say he was fired or released implies that the terms of his contracted were broken & a termination agreement was negotiated. This wasn't the case.

Released, fired, sacked. All the same to me. Bottom line is that he was no longer wanted within the team.

Heard him interviewed tonight, seems by all accounts that he is determined to show he is quicker than Leclerc. In the race preview it was suggested that he may well not adhere to team orders either. Could be interesting on track!

Yeah I don't understand the need for it to sound any different like Vettel was given a gold watched send off.

Both Vettel and Leclerc just wanted to beat one another and it simply didn't work like we saw in Brazil so the partnership needed to be split up.

Given the car is there any need for team orders apart from don't crash into one another?

Vettel's on the market, he needs to sell himself and Ferrari aren't winning any races soon, he needs to do the best for himself.

I'm not convinced we will notice a different  He's not particularly compliant with team orders anyway.

No just saying there's not going to be much need to manage the drivers anyway given the car.

Ferrari may be a mess but if that is the case then Leclerc's 7th was a pretty good show. They have their redesign to come, which might improve their chances a bit. But you have to say that there is not a lot between Racing Point, Ferrari, Red Bull and the biggest surprise McLaren.

Little has been said but both the car and Norris did a fantastic job to get P4 on the grid, with not a lot between them I can see some terrific scrapping between, Perez, Leclerc, Albon, Sainz and Norris. Expect the W11s to disappear with Max chasing but the scarp for the midfield will be mighty.

Apparently Vettel stormed out of the paddock after crashing out of the Styrian Grand Prix, causing Ferrari to cancel all of their post-race media sessions.

A further breakdown in the relationship between Vettel and Ferrari?

I'm starting to suspect he may leave the team before the season is over.

The sad but true fact in the above, is you have included Albon in that midfield mix. Possible we might see Vettel in the Red Bull again, despite Horner's protestations to the contrary.

Vettel might have made quite a number of mistakes recently, but I'm confident he'd be a hell of a lot closer to Max than Alex is displaying at the moment.

Well what Leclerc did was just crazy, have Ferrari placed all their cards on Vettel mk2?

Indeed Albon was too slow to be able to help Verstappen.

After he wins 4 titles and does that then he can get the moniker Vettel Mk2

Well for that he would need the best car on the grid, I'm not sure how much he can control that?

In the meantime in only his second season in F1 he already showed he was as good as Vettel hence Ferrari felt they could dispense with Vettel albeit imo they've replaced him with an inferior driver.

The only reason I see why they have done this is because of the poor on track dynamic between the two drivers, now I would have blamed Vettel moreso for this but after the last race I think Leclerc is just as much to blame hence the Vettel mk2 comment, I actually think he outdid anything Vettel managed to do.

I think it's a little too early to condemn Leclerc to being just a Vettel copycat. So far the good outweighs the bad. He makes some questionable decisions on track, but so do most young drivers. I think that guy has a tremendous future in the sport.

As he has not yet crested 1 WDC, let alone 4, I presume you mean a Ferrari-Vettel copycat, In which case, I am afraid Charles will be, unless Ferrari steps it up several notches in the near future.

The thing is, drivers like Vettel, Alonso, Prost had already made their mark on the sport before joining Ferrari - but what will these young drivers have if they are similarly summarily dismissed in the future?

Now Vettel is purportedly in talks with Aston Martin - we'll see.

Apparently Bild are reporting that Vettel will be driving the 2020 Mercedes next year at the expense of Perez who has a clause that his contract has a pay to end clause so long as it is triggered by July 31st.

I see what you did there!!

If this turns out to be true...Red Bull should bring in Perez to partner Max.

Damn, you had my hopes up for a second there!

Still, would be delighted to see Vettel stay in F1. I have high hopes that Laurence Stroll will take his F1 challenge seriously.

I see what you tried to do there but perhaps not so clever because the teams have to stick with the same cars for next year.

Lighten up, it was a joke! My position in the Renault thread is clearly on the Racing Point side.
