I know that the word Legend is banded around quite freely these days but this man deserves that accolade.

A true great. One of very few deserving the tag in a world of escalation of superlatives.

Agree strongly on that, able to drive anything with wheels and a genuine sportsman at that how many in the present era would do what . he did in the F1 championship 1958

For me Hawthorn is the only undeserved WDC in history. And not quite the type of human being I like, to say the least.

My first racing hero back in the 50s, I loved his first two books and my name was on the library card every year for years, often back-to-back. I remember being devastated when he had that horrendous accident in '62 that ended his F1 career and praying that he would survive. It was difficult getting news in those days so the anxiety was high.

I loved his versatility, as another said, he could drive anything and do it well. RIP to one of the greatest divers to ever pilot four wheels. And a huge Thank You.

The fact he wasn't a champion and anyone who has any interest in sport still knows who he is some 60-70yrs after his pomp tells its own story.

Different era, when you required a whole other set of attributes to succeed in the sport, and really sad to hear of his passing. Like Murray Walker, Sir Stirling Moss was/is part of the motorsport furniture in the UK.

The man was a fantastic driver, undeniable, but the one word that I associated with Sir Sterling was class.

From everything i've read & seen that had anything to do with the man, it seemed the guy was just simply a class act.

Terrible news, truly the one driver that deserved the WDC. Fangio named him in the drivers he feared the most; that says a lot.

Yeah, fully agree with that. A true gent.

I read a report over the weekend that quoted Lady Moss saying "He simply tired in the end and he just closed his beautiful eyes and that was that."

It brought a genuine tear to my eye......

He was my childhood idol, as much a role model as any icon of the time. To be fair, he also had a reputation, well earned, as a ladies man.

When I finally got lap Goodwood some 10 years or so after his accident, I couldn't help but feel the sadness associated with the end of a maestro's career.

The earliest film I ever saw of him was in his pedal car, aged about 6, flashing down the path outside his home and drifting (I mean sideways) through the gate by the road...

Supremely smooth, I'd rate only Moss & Ascari as having the contemporary talent to challenge Fangio.

His sister, Pat, winner of 3 international rallies plus many podiums could drive (and ride) a bit too

100% agree and because of his illustrious career, only marred by the fact he didn't win the WDC, I cringe when I see that word applied to so many countless others who were outstanding only for a season or two, maybe three and then returning to a mediocre driver at best. This man was the cream of the crop throughout his entire career, and a benchmark for every single driver who competed during his time behind the wheel.

Sir Sterling moss belongs in the Mount Rushmore of racing and my Mount Rushmore has to have 8, people, not 4 because I wouldn't know how to exclude any of them justifiably.

It would be Nuvolari, Fangio, Moss, Clark, Schumacher, Prost, Senna, Hamilton.

Honorable mention to Surtees, Vettel, Alonso, Mansell, Andretti, Brabham, McLaren, Piquet, and Lauda.
